00:00Winter fuel payments are a tax-free benefit to help older people with the cost of heating
00:04during the colder months. If you were born before a set date, usually meaning your over state pension
00:10age, you may qualify. The payment is made automatically if you already get the state
00:16pension or certain other benefits and the amount you receive depends on your age and who you live
00:21with. For most people it's between £100 and £300 paid straight into your bank account,
00:27usually in November or December. You don't have to spend on fuel specifically, it's there to help
00:33with extra winter costs. If you think you're eligible but don't receive it automatically,
00:38you can make a claim. Winter fuel payments are designed to give a bit of extra support when
00:43keeping warm matters most.
