00:00From 12th October 2025 a new system begins being introduced at many EU Schengen external borders.
00:07Under these rules non-EU visitors i.e people from outside the EU Schengen
00:13will no longer always get passport stamps.
00:18Instead when they enter or leave their passport data, a photo of their face and fingerprints will
00:23be collected and stored. That digital record replaces the old manual stamping system.
00:29Some key things to note. The system will roll out gradually by the 10th of April 2026 is expected
00:35to be fully in place. The rules affect short stays up to 90 days within any 180 day period.
00:46Children under 12 do not need to give fingerprints though they still need facial scans.
00:50Some people are exempt. For example EU citizens, people with long stay visas or resident permits
01:00or those holding certain residency cards.
01:02The system is meant to make it easier to track who enters and leaves, to spot overstays and to improve security.
