00:16è unico molto
00:18per me
00:20come una prima volta
00:22per avere un film film film film
00:24perché a meccanere
00:48La Viennari Collegge Cinema
00:51I was asked the same question last night actually,
00:54because becoming human represents a lot the new generation of Cambodia at the moment.
01:04But I took a lot of inspiration from the generation of my parents
01:09who went through the genocide for over three years.
01:15And those generations they still like try to overcome the trauma
01:21but my question is that they already overcome
01:24or maybe the trauma is still hidden inside.
01:26And for me as a filmmaker in this new generation
01:30throughout my journey of making documentary in different places in the country
01:35I also witnessed the loss of home, the loss of natural landscape.
01:40so I feel like oh in this generation it kind of experience another type of trauma
01:48I should say a modern trauma you know.
01:50So that's why I had this kind of idea of writing something of a film
01:56that doesn't feel real but it's more like a magic or something kind of serious
02:01that can relate between the human and spirit together.
02:03but in the film it's not about like the spirit and the human living thing
02:09but it's more about the metaphor of two generations
02:13from the past and from the present they come together
02:16and I always ask what would happen when they come together
02:19you know what is the solutions
02:21and for me with my film it just give me just one solution
02:26that oh maybe we should sit down and listen to each other
02:29feel each other like the pain from the past
02:32the pain of the present times
02:34and then each of us maybe we just move on to the next stage of our life.
02:45In becoming human I want to personally give the tribute also to the old era
02:52of Cambodian cinema because at that time people like going to cinema
02:59watching film together with their friends
03:01even my mom also used to go to cinema
03:03so I want to personally give a tribute of this film to that time
03:09and I know that at that time people really didn't have anything to watch
03:14like TV or radio you know
03:17so I think people just spend time together
03:20but I feel like nowadays because we have different kind of means
03:24to enjoy ourselves even individually you know
03:29and I honestly just based on my point of view
03:32I feel like probably the world now take the idea of individualism
03:39a little bit too far because we try to be independent
03:43but at the same time we try to build like a wall around us
03:47like oh I have to be there watch the film alone at home
03:50or watch a thing on my phone you know
03:52even in the train or bus
03:53like you try to enjoy things by yourself
03:55but I feel like I would like the culture of cinema
04:01not only in Cambodia but also in the whole world
04:03to bring this kind of to bring back this kind of sense of community
04:07and I feel like when we enjoy something together it feels better you know
04:13like you go to a concert or you listen to music or you watch a film
04:17like that's one thing that I enjoy traveling to festival
04:22to watch cinema together you know
04:25at least you hear somebody laughing with you
04:27or you hear somebody like expressing their feeling with you you know
04:31or even seeing people walking out of the cinema
04:34is also something nice
04:36but so I feel like probably the sense of community
04:39it still it can save the cinema
04:42I feel like it just like go there with a relaxed mind and be present
04:54and not to expect anything
04:56and this is one thing that I like for myself also when I watch a film
05:00I don't want to expect like oh one plus one is going to lead me to two
05:04you know in the cinema it's different it's going to lead you in different place
05:08and I feel like it's the magic for us also to
05:12it's the magic for the cinema to bring you on an adventure
05:16instead of putting you in a place
05:20already expect something to happen
05:22and for me this is not so magical at all
05:26so magical at all when you're already there in the first act of the film
05:30you already like predict something you know
05:32like okay of course that guy is going to get away or something like that
05:36so I feel like better not to bring expectation
05:40and just be present and enjoy
