00:00And over to some NFL news and notes here.
00:02Micah Parsons, we talked about at the top of the hour, Joe.
00:04Are we worried about his back injury?
00:06Like, if you have to take injections just to get onto the field,
00:10something might be looming here.
00:11And also, what would the Packers not do their due diligence?
00:14Are we making too big of a story out of this
00:16or not enough of a story out of this, Joe?
00:18Well, again, anytime it's a back injury, you need to be concerned.
00:23I mean, I don't care.
00:25I mean, he's 26 years old.
00:27He'll heal better than most.
00:29But the reality is, once a back injury, Donnie, always a back injury.
00:33It doesn't go away.
00:33And the fact that you haven't even hit anybody yet
00:36and you're all ready with talking epidurals.
00:39I mean, this is not a good situation at all.
00:43No, it's not like, hey, my ankle just needs to get a little bit better.
00:46Like, the back is like the worst injury you can have outside of like an ACL
00:49because it seems like once you heard it, Joe, it never goes away.
00:52It can spring up at any moment as a debilitating injury.
00:55Dallas Cowboys news, unlike Micah Parsons, they didn't want to sign.
00:58They signed Deron Blantz with big deal locking up one of their cornerbacks
01:01of the future here, Joe.
01:03Yeah, well, I mean, you got all this money now,
01:05so you might as well lock up somebody here.
01:09And he's well-deserved.
01:10I mean, listen, got to lock up your secondary there.
01:13I mean, I don't think anybody has more pick sixes than he does
01:16over the last three years, first three years in a league.
01:19He has been, he's a big part of the Cowboys' future,
01:23and they locked him up for, I think, a pretty decent price.
01:27Yeah, they did.
01:28By the way, other extensions out there, Jalen Warren of the Pittsburgh Steelers
01:31gets his extension from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
01:34And also, Devon A. Chain expected to play week number one.
01:37And Najee Harris, I guess he can see again, Joe,
01:40expected to suit up in week number one there for the Chargers.
01:43We'll see if he makes it.
01:45The unofficial, you know, summer ending is basically Labor Day, right?
01:49Even though technically summer and fall doesn't start until the end of September,
01:52we get that.
01:53But football season usually begins officially with the NFL as well.
01:56College football is underway.
01:57Week zero, love it.
01:58Week one, fantastic.
02:00Can't wait for week number two.
02:01But the NFL is on the docket on Thursday night football
02:03between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.
02:05But just the week one slate, Joe, the NFL doesn't miss.
02:08And I love the fact that they added the Friday night game.
02:12Because you got Eagles-Cowboys Thursday night.
02:13We're all going to be watching that.
02:14Regardless of your fan or either team, it's football.
02:16It's the first opening night.
02:18Big ratings here.
02:19Then they're giving us now the Brazil game on a Friday night,
02:22which is Kansas City and the Los Angeles Chargers.
02:25They're also giving us Sunday night football, Joe.
02:27The Baltimore Ravens.
02:29And also the Buffalo Bills.
02:31And Monday night, some divisional intrigue.
02:33New quarterbacks going toe-to-toe.
02:35Caleb last year trying to improve with a new quarterback coach
02:37and also a head coach in Ben Johnson.
02:39You take a look at J.J. McCarthy.
02:41I love what the NFL did.
02:42And also, how about a little appetizer, right?
02:44Hey, Aaron Rodgers, good luck on this.
02:46We're going to send you back.
02:47And you're going to take on the Jets at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
02:49Thank you, NFL.
02:50You understand the storylines.
02:52Yeah, listen, I could not have asked for anything better.
02:56We thought it was a, for the first time ever,
03:00we got a absolutely crazy week one in college football with, you know,
03:05three games that featured top 10 teams.
03:08Well, we got a pretty good week one in the NFL here, team.
03:13The divisional rivalries across the board, big-time games.
03:17I can't wait to see how this all works.
03:20But again, like college, a win or a loss in this game doesn't really,
03:26doesn't make a difference.
03:28Don't overreact one way or the other.
03:30Oh, we will.
03:31Oh, we will, Joe.
03:32We will be screaming on Friday in that Eagles-Cowboys game.
03:35We'll be screaming on Monday playing armchair quarterback.
03:38Absolutely love to see him.
03:39And by the way, snuck in there at 425 time range, Detroit and Green Bay as well.
03:43Man, fantastic week of the NFL.
03:45But it does kick off on Thursday night football between the Dallas Cowboys
03:49and the Philadelphia Eagles.
03:50If you're watching lines show over the summer,
03:52it was roughly six to six and a half, depending on where you're shopping at.
03:55They now sit at seven and a halves to eight and a halves here,
03:58depending on where you're shopping at.
03:59Why?
04:00The Micah Parsons move.
04:01People are high on the Philadelphia Eagles.
04:03Buyer always beware in week number one.
04:05Because understand this.
04:06I don't even know if like a single starter played for the Philadelphia Eagles
04:09in the preseason.
04:10So expectations are, yes, the Eagles are still going to be good.
04:13But you never know it until they play.
04:15You got 80 snaps and say, okay, well, we're back here.
04:18Yes, we won a Super Bowl last year.
04:19But how do you figure, Joe, on this point spread?
04:21Let's start there.
04:22Eagles under a touchdown favorite to now over a touchdown favorite.
04:26Is that just the public saying with Micah Parsons gone,
04:28the expectations, and we're beating up the Dallas Cowboys like a pinata right now?
04:32That's factoring in?
04:33Well, it's, listen, I mean, no team has ever gotten more of the benefit of the doubt
04:39in the markets than Dallas.
04:42But, you know, when you consider the fact that Philadelphia outscored Dallas last year,
04:4875 to 13 in two games, I think the public is certainly going, yeah, right.
04:55So we have pretty much the entire Philadelphia team on both sides of the ball back.
05:02And Dallas is actually, well, they just traded away their superstar defensive player.
05:06So, yeah, we're going to keep buying into Philadelphia, blowing them out.
05:11But I'd be careful, Donnie, because history tells us in these spots, week one,
05:17divisional dogs, a lot of familiarity with these two teams.
05:21And, oh, yeah, it's not like Dallas's offense.
05:24It's not because Schottenheimer's the coach.
05:26Schottenheimer's been the OC there for three years.
05:28So Dak and this offense, very acclimated with one another here.
05:34So more than a side, Donnie, you're dealing with the spread.
05:37I don't know that I want to lay seven right out of the gate in a divisional rivalry.
05:42But, my goodness, how is this thing not going to go up and over the total?
05:4846 and a half for pretty much over the summer.
05:50Game week, Joe, sitting at 47 and a half.
05:52And I think you bring up some pretty good points here because sometimes you try to extrapolate
05:55who do you think is going to win.
05:56Of course, I think the Eagles are going to win.
05:57They're favored by seven, eight points.
05:58They're supposed to win this game.
06:00They're the better team, and they're at home.
06:01But sometimes you don't really know what you're going to get out of the gate.
06:04The Eagles did lose some key components on defense, but still,
06:07the shell is there as well as Vic Fangio.
06:09I do expect them to have a good performance, but when I say to myself,
06:11is it going to be the Dallas ground game that wins it for Dallas?
06:14No, you know that's not going to be the case.
06:16Is Dak Prescott usually a very good regular season quarterback?
06:18Yes, he is.
06:19If you look at Dak Prescott's numbers in this game, his passing props, Joe, 248 and a half.
06:24That's okay.
06:24That's 250 yards against a good defense.
06:26But if you figure the Eagles are going to win, because you're trying to play out
06:29like how these teams will play, I don't expect Dallas to do a lot of second half
06:32running on the ground because I do expect them to be losing.
06:35But I do expect a lot of passes here.
06:36Like Dak Prescott to throw two touchdown passes in a total that's listed around 47
06:41and a half, Joe, is plus money.
06:43It's like a plus 115 price.
06:45Like I don't envision Dallas ground and pound inside.
06:47Like you have wide receivers.
06:49George Pickens, he's great at going deep and making one-on-one contested catches.
06:52CeeDee Lamb healthy.
06:53He's going to make any defense regardless of who's defending him.
06:55Certainly try to double cover him, which means other guys should be open.
06:59I actually think Dak Prescott has a decent enough game Thursday night
07:02to throw two touchdown passes even in a loss.
07:04And I'll tell you this, this is not new for Dak Prescott, guys.
07:10He has one of the best records against divisional foes in his career.
07:16He's 29 and 12 against the number versus the NFC East.
07:20And he's covered those games by close to a touchdown.
07:24So he has been one of the most profitable quarterbacks to back against other NFC East teams.
07:30It's what he does.
07:32Going to be interesting.
07:34I can't wait for this.
07:36Now I'm getting excited because I wasn't looking at the prop bets just yet because it's game week.
07:39You want to get a look at the practice reports coming out.
07:41Landon Dickerson didn't practice yesterday for the Philadelphia Eagles, but is still expected to play.
07:45We'll see how that goes.
07:46But you read like the beat writers like tea leaves like coming out of camp.
07:49AJ Brown missed the damn near entire preseason with a hamstring injury, but they took it slow.
07:54He's expected to be 100%.
07:55Devontae Smith struggled a little bit with the back.
07:57He's expected to be 100%.
07:58But you know what numbers I always look at, Joe?
08:00Like the front line guys, yes, they're fun to bet on and where are they going to come in.
08:04But Jahan Dotson, who last year started to come on in the playoffs, they said he had a really good camp.
08:08Do you know what his receiving number is in this game, Joe?
08:11It's seven and a half.
08:12You're basically asking for one catch from your third wide receiver in this game.
08:16We're buying low, people.
08:17I'm already, you know what?
08:18I'm already excited, Joe.
08:19Like I'm ready to fire bets right now on this game for Thursday night.
08:23You got to love it too.
08:24And Jalen Hurts, listen, he's no stranger here.
08:27The guy is 26 and three straight up at home as a favorite.
08:33That's pretty impressive stuff there.
08:3693 and a half yards for his rushing prop.
08:39To score a touchdown, it's damn near minus 200.
08:41Jalen Hurts, 36 and a half.
08:43Fresh coming off the season, getting those legs into it here.
08:46Look at how many opportunities.
08:47Oh, Don, you're only taking Eagles.
08:49Nonsense.
08:49I just told you.
08:50I like that Dak Prescott over one and a half touchdown pass at plus money in this game Thursday.
08:55So many ways to go.
08:56So many ways to get after it.
08:58We still got today, tomorrow, and Thursday.
09:00Right here on the early line.
09:01To keep the prep coming, people.
09:03Right here this morning on the early line, setting the table for the rest of your sports grid day.
09:06And certainly a monster sports grid week, which includes NFL action coming up once again, people.
09:12Can't get enough of it.
09:13It's Thursday night football.
09:14It's going to be the Eagles.
09:15It's going to be the Dallas Cowboys.
09:16I'm Donnie Wrightside.
09:17But he's Joe Ranieri and bringing in Tom Vecchio, no strangers to the networks.
09:20He's all over the place getting things done, Tom.
09:23And as you wake up post-Labor Day, it just feels like we're renewed.
09:27Like the NFL is right here and we can taste it.
09:31Yeah, we can.
09:32Some nice cooler weather in the air as well certainly helps kind of set the mood for football season.
09:38We're coming up to, I would say, what should be one of the best years that I've been personally excited for.
09:44I don't want to say in a long time, but just the level of talent across the league is phenomenal.
09:49We're going to see, you know, different quarterbacks, young quarterbacks, something like Daniels in that division in the NFC East.
09:54Can they take a step forward?
09:55What happens with the Lions after they lost both coordinators on offense and defense?
09:58Like there's so many good storylines that the season is going to be an absolute race from start to finish.
10:05Absolutely, Tom.
10:05Let's get started in Philadelphia and have some fun with this because for me, the first two weeks of the NFL season, a lot like, yes, I'll be making wagers.
10:11Yes, I'll be handicapping, but they're educated guesses because I don't really know what to anticipate.
10:15And some might say like, well, Donnie, what do you mean?
10:17The Philadelphia Eagles, they got Jalen Hurts.
10:18They got, you know, Devontae Smith.
10:19Who cares if you didn't see them in the preseason?
10:22Crazy things happen in the NFL from week one to week number two.
10:25Games that you think are going to be easy victories turn into losses and away you go.
10:28But it doesn't mean you can't be on the right side of some of these equations, Tom.
10:31So heading into the football season, give the people like a PSA.
10:34Like how do you approach week number one and week number two before we actually see what these football teams are about?
10:40You know, I would say it's similar to spring training in baseball where like just because a hitter wasn't hitting well in spring training doesn't mean he's going to be terrible.
10:49Just because we didn't see A.J. Brown and Devontae Smith and Saquon Barkley play great or play at all in preseason does not mean that they're not going to put up 80, 90, 100 yards in week one or week two.
10:59So, you know, I would prefer to lean on some vets in certain spots, but this doesn't mean I'm not going to be willing to take some shots on younger players just because maybe teams want to get those younger players exposed early in the season and they want to ease in the vets.
11:12So someone like Will Shipley on Thursday night, is he a player that could see just a slightly elevated role because it's, hey, we don't need to have this massive workload on Saquon from day one.
11:21Look, we have a long season ahead of us.
11:23We know how many touches, just the volume of touches Saquon had last year.
11:27That is a lot to repeat.
11:28So let's ease him in.
11:29Let's mix in Will Shipley just a little bit more.
11:31Let's ease in the wide receivers and have a well-rounded offense instead of like 70-30 when it comes to rushing passing.
11:39Well, it's interesting, too, because you're going to have – we talked a little bit about it yesterday, Tom, on Endgame Live on how a lot of divisional matchups in week one.
11:50And you've got – and Thursday night, I mean, it's not like Dak Prescott and the Eagles don't know one another here.
11:56So how do you approach this game?
11:58Well, right from the total and the spread, to me, that implies that we're going to see a decent amount of scoring.
12:04I'm not going to say the total is going to be flying over.
12:06I don't love the over or under.
12:09I'm not going to take a side on that either way.
12:11But if the Cowboys are going to be playing from behind, it really should force the Cowboys to pass a lot.
12:17And this is really going to be one of my neighbors for the entire season is the Cowboys defense is average to below average, especially now that they lost Parsons.
12:23They're going to be playing from behind.
12:24Their running back room is bad.
12:26Javante Williams, Miles Sanders, and the rookie Jadon Blue.
12:30Williams and Sanders are replacement-level running backs.
12:33They're not going to – these are not players that you just – oh, oh, this is the focal point of our offense.
12:37We're going to give the ball in 20 times per game.
12:39This means that Dak has to pass the ball.
12:41Like, you paid Dak.
12:42You paid CeeDee Lamb.
12:43You brought in George Pickens.
12:44This is the offense.
12:45So, if they're going to be playing from behind, it's really going to be one of my favorite bets the entire season.
12:49It's going to be Dak Prescott over passing attempts, 36 and a half to start week one.
12:54This is where I think they get things going.
12:55They play from behind.
12:56It's a higher total.
12:57Their running back room is awful.
12:59And they have two good receivers to throw the ball to.
13:02Let's get some yards on the board from Dak and, more importantly, just the attempts overall.
13:07Yeah, I'm with you there on that too, Tom, because we were just taking a look at some of the prop bets in the previous segment.
13:10Just looking at Dak Prescott's over one and a half touchdown passes.
13:13This is at plus money.
13:14I'm with you.
13:1547 and a half total.
13:16Like, some people like an Eagles fan.
13:17Like, oh, yeah, Don, that means 41 points out of the field at the Eagles.
13:20That's not the way it plays out if you just correlate the spread itself as opposed to the total.
13:24Let's just say Dallas scores three touchdowns in this game.
13:26And as you just pointed out, I don't think we're relying on running backs at this point.
13:29I think you're going to move it through the air for the Cowboys, and you can have some success with you there.
13:33No lag, people, on your week here.
13:35Yes, we didn't have a Monday show here on the early line.
13:38That's because it was Labor Day.
13:39We wanted the people to get enjoyed, get rejuvenated, get re-energized.
13:43And then we would come back on the air on a Tuesday to set that table for the rest of this day and, more importantly, the rest of this week.
13:48That's what we're doing today.
13:49But at this point of the show and this segment, we love to reach out to the public to see what they have to say.
13:55Here's the public.
13:56Oh, boy.
14:06You know what we're asking questions on, Joe.
14:07It's week one of the NFL season.
14:09It's game number one of the NFL season.
14:10The world champion, Philadelphia Eagles, taking on the Dallas Cowboys without Micah Parsons.
14:15With a new coach showing up to the helm.
14:17It's going to be the same old Dak Prescott, the same old Dallas Cowboys.
14:20The question we asked at SportsGrid, our account on X, was simple.
14:24Will the Cowboys upset the Eagles on Thursday?
14:27Resounding no.
14:2992% of the people voted no.
14:33I'm with the people out here, Joe.
14:35Were you one of the 7.6% out here on yes?
14:37Well, of course, you said a resounding no.
14:43But the stats, the actual data tells us that in these games, in game one of the regular season among division rivals, guess what?
14:57Yeah, it's about 50-50, guys.
14:59I'm just saying it's about 50-50 since 2010, I believe, in fact, is what they are saying.
15:06Divisional dogs in week one, 40-41-2 straight up since 2010.
15:12That is pretty profitable if you're looking at it.
15:16So I don't agree with the 90-10.
15:18I think it's closer to 50-50.
