00:00Sense's DeafBlind started in the 50s for two ladies who had DeafBlind children.
00:06There was no, nothing at all, so they started it and now it's grown globally.
00:11As of last week, we were doing Sense International Week
00:16because they've got no help in foreign countries for DeafBlind children,
00:21so we just want to highlight that at the moment.
00:25Nestled in Bristol's vibrant community,
00:27the Sense Charity Shop on White Ladies Road stands as a beacon of local generosity.
00:33Every item donated from second-hand clothes and books to toys and trinkets
00:37becomes a vital resource to fund Sense's life-changing services
00:42for over 30,000 disabled individuals and families coping with complex needs,
00:47including DeafBlindness.
00:50Firstly, tell me a little bit about the charity itself
00:54and in terms of who they help a little bit more.
00:56Well, it says DeafBlind, but with DeafBlind,
00:59there's a lot of different complex disabilities with it.
01:05Yeah.
01:06We only deal with the fundraising.
01:08This is where the schools come in, in the centres,
01:10where the funds go to help people who have obviously,
01:15because it's not just DeafBlind,
01:16they've got lots of other complex needs with it.
01:20Volunteers form the heart and soul of Sense's White Ladies Road Shop,
01:25bringing energy, care and skill to every shift.
01:29From greeting customers and processing donations
01:32to handling till work and crafting eye-catching window displays,
01:35these dedicated individuals turn everyday tasks into acts of community support.
01:41Let's chat to one of these star volunteers,
01:44who has really made a name for himself in the local community.
01:47And then you get the special needs who I like to let them do as much as they can.
02:09I like my star on the till, he's, yeah, he's brilliant,
02:13he's all Jason on the till.
02:15Yeah, I like them to do a bit of everything.
02:18I wouldn't expect anybody to do anything that I wouldn't do myself.
02:21Obviously, some of them aren't capable,
02:23but I like them to try.
02:25If they try, they can't do it, then that's fine.
02:28They just, they find their little niche and they're quite happy.
02:31Because here we have no trouble with donations.
02:43Obviously, it comes in, it goes downstairs to be sorted.
02:47We do get some rags, but then we get money for rags.
02:51And then we see fit what goes out seasonal.
02:55We put the winter away for the winter, the summer away for the summer.
