00:00You know, every day I feel blessed for our success at Extensive.
00:06The bills just keep getting better and better, bigger and bigger.
00:10You know, a huge part of Extensive success is being in the Houston area.
00:15What can I say? Houston is world headquarters of customization.
00:20I don't think there's another place like this.
00:22We got every kind of custom vehicle being built out here.
00:25You know, like one-way diesel.
00:27They've been down a couple of times to help us out.
00:29Is it going to make some power?
00:311,500 horsepower and about 2,000 foot-pounds of torque.
00:34They've been cranking out some cool stuff lately.
00:36Wide-open garage.
00:37What's happening, man?
00:38Oh, you know, another day.
00:39You know, David and Daniel.
00:40I've known them guys.
00:41I've known Daniel his whole life.
00:43You know, they're really deep into the mud and off-roading.
00:49They've built some really cool, impressive stuff.
00:52And then there's the Mod Mafia guys.
00:54You know, they're the Hummer, Overlander guys,
00:57and we've done some work for them recently.
00:59Man, it looks nice.
01:00I've never seen a cage like that.
01:02And I really like seeing everything that's coming out of their shop.
01:06Seeing what everybody else is building just helps us push our creativity just even higher.
01:11You always want to outdo the next guy.
01:13You always want to one-up your game.
01:15And the speed and aggressiveness some of these shops are putting out around here.
01:19It's just crazy.
01:20I got a call from my buddy Johnny Moore to come check out one of his projects he wants us to do.
01:35So I've actually done quite a bit of work for Johnny.
01:38You know, he's got several diesel trucks, and man, we've got a great relationship.
01:42I've known him for several years, so I'm ready to knock another one out for him.
01:51Whew!
01:52What do we have here?
01:58Cannot wait to get my hands on this.
02:00It's a 73 Roadrunner, a very iconic car.
02:03This thing doesn't look like it even needs anything.
02:08And this thing is super clean.
02:10All it needs is a diesel swap.
02:11Throw about a thousand horse to it.
02:13He'll love this thing.
02:15Forget American Muscle.
02:16We're all about those Cummins diesels at one-way diesels.
02:18So, you know, getting that in there, that's going to complete that thing.
02:21It'll be perfect.
02:24What's happening?
02:25What's up, Johnny?
02:26Not much, man. You found the place?
02:27Yeah, man. Found it.
02:28I am so excited about this.
02:30Yeah.
02:31I can't wait to shove a thousand horsepower Cummins in that.
02:33That would be awesome if that's not the build, man.
02:35That's my car.
02:36What do you mean?
02:37That car's finished.
02:38Your project's back here.
02:39That's your project.
02:40That?
02:41Yeah.
02:42I mean, it's definitely a project.
02:44What is this?
02:451979 Dodge Little Red Express.
02:47Maybe it was, Johnny, but there's nothing there.
02:50Of course.
02:51Frame, cab, a few other bits.
02:56This isn't really a build.
02:57This is a build.
02:59Like, ground up, nothing there.
03:02Start fresh.
03:03I might be able to find a few more pieces over in my other shop.
03:06I hope you find another truck.
03:07Well...
03:08I mean, this is...
03:09We've got the frame here, some of it.
03:12Cab looks decent.
03:13Okay, I'll give you that.
03:14Minus the invisible firewall and the one pedal, but we'll make that work.
03:19We've got a hood here and somewhat of a door.
03:23So, what exactly are you wanting to do with this, Johnny?
03:26You know, back in 1979, this was the fastest production truck off the line.
03:29But that was a long time ago.
03:30But I want to recreate it in today's times and make it one of the fastest on the road today.
03:35Okay, now I hear fast.
03:37You got my attention.
03:38Yep.
03:39How fast do you want it to be?
03:40Maybe faster than that.
03:41That's easy.
03:42That's fast.
03:43That's not a problem.
03:44I can make it twice as fast as that.
03:46I've got this.
03:47What I want to end up with is a fast Little Red Express.
03:50It's capable of towing the car to the track.
03:52It's capable of driving every day if I want to.
03:54But also capable of being cleaned up and taken to a show and win the show itself.
03:58You've given us one of the biggest projects we've ever tackled.
04:00But I'm starting to get excited about this one.
04:02That's awesome.
04:03Just to go over a few things, big horsepower.
04:06Red, fast, and a new truck.
04:09Because there's not much here to work with.
04:12Pretty much, yeah.
04:13Okay.
04:14And the stacks.
04:15Don't forget about the stacks.
04:16Of course.
04:17You know, these are known for that.
04:18When you think of a Little Red Express, that's what comes to my mind.
04:21Exactly.
04:22The Little Red Express had the chrome stacks.
04:24It's got to have the stacks to be able to blow a little black smoke every now and then.
04:27I've got to start loading parts up.
04:29Pray for me, man.
04:30I'll do it, man.
04:31I appreciate it.
04:32This would have been perfect, guys.
04:34That's too easy.
04:35You ain't lying.
04:37The moment Johnny told me that was the Little Red Express, I started to feel like
04:43better about this and get a little excited because that's a very iconic truck.
04:48Back then, that was one of the fastest production trucks made.
04:52We're going to take it to a whole other level when we get done with it.
04:56I know there's going to be a lot of work involved.
05:00He wants it red.
05:01He wants stacks.
05:02He wants it fast.
05:03He wants to be able to tow his Roadrunner.
05:05And I've got five pieces.
05:07And it's going to definitely test our capabilities.
05:14Whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:17Let's let it down.
05:19I created one-way diesel for my love for the diesel engine.
05:26The name came from a Bible verse.
05:28You know, John 14, 6.
05:30It says, I am the way, the truth, and the light.
05:32No one comes to the Father except through me.
05:36I've always loved cars, but I really loved the diesel engine.
05:39Hit it.
05:41Man, this thing sounds awesome.
05:43They make a lot of torque, and torque moves mass.
05:46Once you feel it, you want more.
05:48You want it to go faster.
05:49It's addictive.
05:54Me, my dad, my brother, Clay, we started one-way diesel in a little dirt garage
05:59with no tools hardly.
06:01We've expanded the business so much from just building engines,
06:04tuning them, modifying them.
06:05Oh, yeah.
06:06To doing a full-on build.
06:08But it makes it even cooler to get to do this while working with my family.
06:12What in the world have you got here?
06:14You cleaning up?
06:15This is our next project, guys.
06:18Okay, so where's the rest of it?
06:20I'm working on that.
06:21This is a 1979 Little Red Express.
06:24Oh, cool.
06:25You know, the one cool thing I always loved about that truck
06:27is it came factory with those stacks.
06:29That was iconic.
06:30It was.
06:31So we definitely want to integrate that back into it.
06:32Does it have the stack?
06:34Well, no.
06:35No.
06:36Well, we're going to make some.
06:37Yeah.
06:38It's got to have stacks.
06:39It's got to have the stacks.
06:40Yeah, that's an iconic look.
06:41So when Dodge rolled out in 1979, the Little Red Express, they were awesome.
06:46Stacks had wood in the bed, wood on the bedside.
06:49These trucks were pretty fast.
06:50I mean, back in the day, a little over 200 horsepower was a big deal then.
06:55So whose is it and what all he wants?
06:57All right, this is Johnny Moore's.
06:58Y'all know Johnny Moore.
06:59Yeah.
07:00So I know he wants to be able to outrun his 1973 Roadrunner.
07:03Oh, really?
07:04And you know me, and I might have talked this up.
07:06Oh, yeah.
07:07So we're going to have to come through with this, guys.
07:09He wants all the meat potatoes.
07:10He wants it looking good.
07:11He wants it fast, you know, 800, 1,000 horsepower.
07:14Okay.
07:15He wants to be able to tow with it, which I was like.
07:17What's he going to tow with it?
07:18He wants to tow his 73 Roadrunner.
07:20Ah.
07:21Yeah.
07:22Okay.
07:23All we have to do is some beefy coilover springs in the rear.
07:26Four length at nine inch back there.
07:28Dance-wise, what's he want to go with?
07:30Let's keep it low.
07:31Let's keep it fast.
07:32Let's keep it classy.
07:33We want this thing slick.
07:34Yeah.
07:35But still keep the originality of a Little Red Express.
07:37It is lacking a firewall.
07:40It's completely gone.
07:42But we can fix that.
07:43Well, that gives us an opportunity to set that engine back as far as we can.
07:46Yeah.
07:47And get the weight transfer to the rear.
07:48Yeah.
07:49To the rear.
07:50So we can put this power down.
07:51Exactly.
07:52Yeah.
07:53We would have had to modify it anyway.
07:54Yeah.
07:55We're going to decent swap it.
07:56We want to stay old school.
07:57I think we want to keep that classic.
07:58Let's put a 12 out.
07:59Yeah.
08:0048 RE.
08:01Let's put that old dinosaur in there.
08:02And then let's do a custom compound turbo setup.
08:04Once we get all that dialed in, you're talking about leaving something in the dust?
08:07Oh, for sure, dude.
08:08I'm excited, man.
08:09That's going to be sick.
08:10First things first.
08:11Let's get the frame in the shop.
08:13Start getting on the back half and getting the engine and trans mocked up.
08:16Sounds like a good game plan.
08:17Let's get done.
08:21On ground up builds like this, because we're engine guys, we build from the engine out.
08:25All right.
08:26Let's get that frame in here.
08:27So once we get the frame under the truck, we get the engine and trans mocked up perfectly.
08:32And then we'll build from there.
08:35There you go.
08:36All right.
08:37Perfect.
08:38Man, I think we're ready to start mocking up our engine.
08:39Yeah, man.
08:40Let's do it.
08:41All right.
08:42Oh.
08:43Ain't that thing light?
08:44Oh, yeah.
08:45There you go.
08:46I got a foam block here that weighs about 20 pounds.
08:48It's an exact replica of a 12-valve Cummins.
08:50You know, we can bolt all the accessories onto it, and we can get all angles right.
08:55So we don't have to worry about fighting a 1,000-pound engine.
08:58One of the biggest things when we mock up these engines is we got to get our degree
09:02right.
09:03At this power level, man, this thing has to be perfect.
09:06That's why we want to get these mock-up motor mounts in here, so that we can get our
09:09driveline exactly where we need it to be.
09:12There it is.
09:13That looks great, man.
09:14Looks sharp, man.
09:15Now we got our engine mocked up.
09:17Next thing to do is get our trans in there.
09:20You know, we can't set up our rear end.
09:23We can't set up our driveline until we get the transmission bolted in.
09:27So basically, you got to work from the front of the engine all the way to the rear of the
09:32transmission.
09:33That all works together with our suspension.
09:35Okay.
09:36Now let's get our adapter plate bolted onto the back of the block, and then we can install
09:40the transmission.
09:45Perfect.
09:46Now we're going to check our clearances.
09:47We're going to check our angles.
09:48Make sure everything's sitting where it should be.
09:50Okay, it looks like that clears right there.
09:51We want about a half-inch clearance all the way around on our transmission because this
09:57engine, even though we got semi-solid mounts in it, it's still going to move some.
10:02So we got to give enough room for it to do that without hitting anything.
10:05Yeah, it's such a torquey beast.
10:07Coming up.
10:09What's Chris's truck doing here?
10:12Well, he says the front diff is messing up.
10:14Okay.
10:15But, uh, he wants to compete.
10:16So we got to figure out what's wrong with it and turn it into a bounty hole truck.
10:20Ooh, these babies are big.
10:34While we're putting the bed and suspension together on the Little Red Express, Dad's picking
10:37out an engine for it.
10:39We each have our roles at One Way Diesel.
10:41My dad takes a lot of pride in finding and building the perfect engine.
10:44We do have a 12-valve over here that will fit the bill, I believe.
10:49We always try to keep, you know, several engines in stock, core engines that we can
10:53build for different applications.
10:55We've got a 6-7 Cummins here.
10:58It would work, but it's electronic.
11:00I want to stay away from electronics on this.
11:02In 79, there was no computers.
11:04There was no electric fuel pumps.
11:06There was, you know, it was all manual.
11:08So, that's kind of the theme I want to stay with.
11:11Now, we have a 12-valve here that we could use.
11:13It's got a manual injection pump, manual lift pump.
11:16Basically, you get decent with this thing and it'll run.
11:19Or, we have a VP engine, 24-valve Cummins.
11:22You can take the front cover off of a 12-valve and put it on here and put the P-pump on this
11:28and you'll have a P-pump 24-valve.
11:30That might be an option.
11:31I really feel like we just need to stay simple.
11:34So, this engine right here, I think this is the one we need to go with.
11:37I really do.
11:38This the Rigolo 12-valve Cummins.
11:40It may not look like much right now, but I promise you, when we're done with it, it'll be show quality and it's going to be fast.
11:46And we'll get 1,000 horsepower out of this, no problem.
12:01My name is Daniel, and me and my dad, Dave, we own Wide Open Garage.
12:05Whatever you want to do off-road related, if it's got to go up, over, or through anything, we got you covered.
12:10You know, when I was younger, I was racing four-wheelers.
12:13I actually ended up going pro.
12:15I'm Googling myself here to look up my...
12:17You can actually see, you know, what races I've won.
12:21You know, racing, you got to be able to work on your own thing and build it.
12:24Of course, you know, I had to. I didn't have the money to pay someone to do it.
12:27So, I learned building these mud trucks basically from my four-wheeler.
12:31You know, and it kind of just grew from there.
12:33Next thing you know, people are contacting me, paying me to build them a mud truck.
12:37And it's just gotten crazy, you know, and it turned into a business.
12:40You know, now I get paid to work on mud trucks with my best friend and my dad.
12:44You know, to this day, we still have people rolling in with stuff they just got to have.
12:54Hey, Chris. What's going on, mate?
12:56What's going on, Dave?
12:57What you got tore up now?
12:59Man, something in the differential.
13:01Actually, something's making noise.
13:03She's broke. I need her fixed up.
13:05Of course. We know you. You tear up things.
13:08I've known Chris since he was a kid, a youngster.
13:11Grew up on the next street over there and started running around with us and Daniel.
13:15And he was ate up with the four-wheelers.
13:17Then he went to mud trucks.
13:19And he's been ate up with it ever since.
13:21Me and the wife, you know, we go putting around up and down at the park.
13:24Hit a couple little mud holes here and there.
13:26He's got a samurai.
13:28Samurais have been getting pretty popular at the mud park here lately.
13:31They're short, they turn good, and they look good.
13:34There ain't no telling what he did to the truck this time.
13:37But, you know, we'll get him fixed up.
13:39I bet it's probably full of water, you know, because you ain't on no maintenance plan.
13:42No, no, no. It ain't going to be that. I bet 100.
13:44Really?
13:45It ain't that.
13:46You know, I'm going to get some tools here later. I'll take that bet.
13:49Now that I'm bringing it in, I mean, we might as well do a big makeover.
13:52What you wanting to do to it?
13:54I'm thinking bounty hole killer.
13:55Oh, really?
13:56Wanting to go through the hole.
13:57Okay.
13:58In the muddy world, a bounty hole is just a really big hole.
14:02Could be mud, water, rocks.
14:04There's two ways to win it.
14:06How far you went or how long it took you to get there.
14:09You have to have a really light truck or a really fast truck.
14:13So either you need a lot of motor or you need it lifted very high.
14:16I want the biggest, baddest samurai out there.
14:18Definitely.
14:19What's up with the pink, man?
14:20Oh, man.
14:21Come on.
14:22You got to be able to see me.
14:23Man, we put some bigger wheels on there.
14:25We'll see you.
14:26Oh, that's what I'm thinking about.
14:27We get these bigger wheels, it's going to be able to go through anything.
14:30We're going to have to upgrade them axles because you know they break.
14:33We can't have you out there late at night and broke down.
14:35I ain't coming to get you.
14:36I'm busy.
14:37No, that ain't no problem.
14:38We can upgrade axles.
14:39I want something unbreakable.
14:40Definitely clean this caliper and this rotor up.
14:42I think that's the one that's making noise.
14:43Looks like it might be leaking a little oil.
14:45Probably leaking some water, too.
14:47It looks like oil to me.
14:48Okay.
14:49I still got that 100.
14:50Hey, everyone that comes here don't have water.
14:52Uh-uh.
14:53But they've been at the mud park all day.
14:55We'll get this thing unloaded and get on it and see what we got to do.
14:59You know, driving trucks is fun, but building trucks is what we do for a living.
15:03You ready?
15:04I'm going.
15:05Let me get some of this water out of here.
15:06We're going to build this truck right for him where he can compete with it.
15:09When he goes out there in the park, he's going to be the best.
15:12We are going to fix him up.
15:24Looks like you've been doing your afternoon.
15:26Oh, you know, got to take advantage of that rain.
15:28What's Chris' truck doing here?
15:30Well, he says the front diff is messing up.
15:32Okay.
15:33But he's wanting to change up his game.
15:35He wants to compete.
15:36Chris wants to compete.
15:37He said he wants to get through that pond.
15:39No way.
15:40Yep.
15:41So we've got to figure out what's wrong with it and turn it into a bounty hole truck.
15:44We've got to fix it, and then he wants us to make it go faster.
15:47What?
15:48What?
15:49But he pretty much just told me, hey, tell Daniel, y'all do what you do.
15:54I'm thinking like a 60 to 72-inch tall tire.
15:58Big time.
15:59Let's just go crazy with it.
16:00Big time.
16:01I know Chris.
16:02He likes to show out.
16:03Hey, if he can't go through the bottom, he can float across the top.
16:05Right.
16:06Maybe we can lighten it up a little bit.
16:07I can see some stuff we need to cut off of here.
16:09We definitely have to upgrade the axles, because it sounds like he's already got something tore up.
16:12Yes.
16:13Either swap the axles, or we're going to do some custom hybrid axles, probably planetaries.
16:17That's your department there.
16:18You know what to do.
16:19I'm just a helper on that part.
16:20That's right.
16:21Well, let's get it in there, man.
16:22I got a lot of work to do, it sounds like.
16:27You know, the thing about a lake crosser is, it's got to be able to go over the water, but it also has to be watertight.
16:31There you go.
16:32First thing we need to do is pull apart the axles, see if anything's broke, and of course, see if any water's getting in.
16:39You know, the modern world is not about looking pretty.
16:42It's about getting the job done.
16:43We're not in the business throwing away any good parts.
16:46We keep what we can and replace what we can't.
16:48All right.
16:49We got the wheels off.
16:50We're going to go in next, get the caliper off and the dry shaft off.
16:53See if we can find this problem.
16:56Check it out, Robert.
16:57Look how bad this pens wore out.
16:59Rotor's been hidden into the pen.
17:02The rotor was digging into the caliper pen.
17:05That's supposed to be smooth like the backside here.
17:07So there's definitely something going on.
17:09So we're going to keep tearing into it.
17:12Oh, look at that.
17:15Definitely got some problems.
17:18So we got the brake caliper removed, the dry shaft removed, and the rotor.
17:23And there's clearly something going on in here.
17:25That's not supposed to move like that.
17:27Looks like the whole nut's coming loose on the backside.
17:29Oh, dear.
17:30Oh, yeah.
17:31It's all junk.
17:32So these rock wells are notorious for pinion bearing problems.
17:33You get water, mud all in there, and it won't get the right amount of oil it needs to the
17:37pinion bearing.
17:38And if you're like Chris on no maintenance, you're going to run into this problem all the
17:42time.
17:49Is there a bearing in that side?
17:50Yeah.
17:51Mine don't have nothing.
17:52Really?
17:53No.
17:54Definitely where the noise was coming from, huh?
17:56So you can see here that the bearing is completely gone.
18:00There's supposed to be a bearing here.
18:02The race is left in the inner part of the bearing, but that's all.
18:07I'll go ahead and get this thing pulled out of here.
18:09We're going to go ahead and get both bearings replaced on this.
18:12The only bad thing is all that bearing material is in here.
18:16So we have to make sure we get it cleaned out.
18:21Okay.
18:22Oh, yeah.
18:23I want to see some water come out of this thing.
18:25Oh, I feel like there's going to definitely be water in there.
18:29Oh, yeah.
18:30Oh, yeah.
18:31Water, water, water.
18:33Woo!
18:34Man.
18:35Chris is buying us lunch.
18:37He said there wasn't no water in it.
18:39There's water.
18:40Yeah.
18:41That says zero maintenance.
18:46Oh.
18:47Oh, yeah.
18:48This one's making a noise right here.
18:49Look.
18:50The cage is jammed up in there from the bearing.
18:52Look at that.
18:53Look at this.
18:54It's all chewed up.
18:55Oh, wow.
18:56Basically, you have to go in here and make sure you get every piece of metal out.
19:01One of those pieces of bearing will jam up in between the gear and knock a tooth off the gear or just cause failure.
19:07Now that we've cleaned up the late crossers axles, we can get them sealed up and watertight.
19:12We'll go ahead and get the pinion built, get the new bearings on it.
19:15So see here, I pulled the shaft out.
19:17You can clearly see here that some of the material from the bearing has chipped the teeth.
19:23If you were to continue driving it like that, it would look like this pinion gear, which is completely trash.
19:29So we got a new pinion gear here, and we're going to go ahead and get this put on the shaft and also the races and new bearings.
19:35Almost.
19:36So we just removed the old bearing.
19:37Obviously, it's missing a few things.
19:38This is what it's supposed to look like.
19:39This is the inner part of the bearing that's left.
19:40The cage and the bearing part is actually what we cleaned out earlier.
19:53There she goes.
19:54All right, so we got the old pinion removed.
19:56Yeah, we're going to go ahead and get the new one installed and throw this in the trash.
20:00Put a little grease on it, you know?
20:01They're oil bathed, but a little grease never hurt nobody.
20:02That's for sure.
20:03You don't want to run and dry when you first put it in.
20:04Nah, you know Chris.
20:05It'll never see oil again.
20:06When you're using this tool on this bearing, it's very important not to actually get this
20:19piece into the actual cage of the bearing.
20:21You only want to hit it right here because it's hardened metal and this is all soft.
20:25It'll just destroy it.
20:26That's it.
20:30There it is.
20:31Center trunk all cleaned out.
20:34All the bearing material is out of there.
20:36You don't want it in there because it'll chip the pinion gear.
20:38And we'll go ahead and get the races and get them in and go ahead and stab the pinion.
20:43Yeah.
20:44Okay.
20:45So going back together, we noticed you clearly see that the seal is wore out from the bearing.
20:49I'm going to go ahead and get that seal knocked out.
20:51We're going to get a new one installed.
20:53Now we see that it's got a good seal.
20:56So no water will get in it.
21:00Come on, honey.
21:01All right, so we got the pinion.
21:03New bearings, new races, new seals.
21:05No more shaft play.
21:06I mean, it turns beautifully, actually.
21:08I mean, I'm real happy with it.
21:10Time to move on.
21:11My dad sourced these old rear ends for the Little Red Express.
21:25This is a Ford 9-inch rear end.
21:27These are very strong, tough rear ends.
21:29And I'm not a Ford guy, but they made some good parts, and this is one of them.
21:33We're going to clean all these old brackets off.
21:37Then we're going to get it centered under the truck, pull our measurements, start mocking
21:40up our four-link bars.
21:42I just cut off all the excess metal that we do not need on this rear end.
21:48Now it's time to grind these welds clean.
21:51That metal don't like sticks to rust, so I'm trying to scratch it all off.
21:56You know, we're not going to keep these old drum brakes.
21:58We're going to do a disc brake conversion, so we've got to get all this stuff off.
22:03All right, let's do this.
22:06Oh, that ain't bad at all.
22:07No, here.
22:08No.
22:09All right.
22:10You want to grab that other jack and put it on the driveshaft.
22:13All right, ease it down.
22:15The next step is we've got to get the rear end level.
22:18Come down.
22:19And then we're going to start to make sure our drive line angle is correct.
22:23That's good.
22:24All right, I'm going to just pull it off the center off the top of it.
22:27You know, half an inch off, this thing's going to look terrible.
22:30You know, when you hit a bump or something or this thing makes power, it's not going to
22:33hit the bed and crack the wood or, you know, we just got to take our time measuring out
22:37before we start welding out our brackets to the four-link.
22:40That's pretty good right there.
22:46That's not good.
22:49Now we've got our 12 outcomings on our engine stand.
22:52As you can see, it's nasty, dirty.
22:54It's had a few miles put on it.
22:55But we're going to tear it all down, get it ready to go to the machine shop, get our
22:59cylinders looking good, our crank looking good, and then replace it with all new parts.
23:05This is basically a tractor engine.
23:07One of the most durable, tough engines that Cummins made.
23:11Basically, you get diesel to this thing and it'll run.
23:18You know, at Christmas, like when you get a new toy, I would take it apart, try to make it faster or do some kind of modification to it and put it back together.
23:26And that's kind of like these. Take it apart, try to make it better.
23:29We've got this engine completely tore down. It's ready to go to the machine shop, let them do their thing, get it back.
23:36We'll start putting this thing together.
23:38We've got the four link mocked up and installed the new firewall.
23:50Now that everything's mocked up, now we're going to take the cab and bed off so we can send those off the paint.
23:55Then we can break this whole frame down, weld everything out, and send it to powder coat.
24:00You guys ready? There's a lot of little things we have left, but man, we are making a ton of progress on this project.
24:06Man, this thing is going to look good when she's done.
24:19Back in 1979, this Little Red Express came with a V8 engine from the factory pushing 200 horsepower.
24:25Dad's building a 12-valve Cummins that's going to put a lot of torque out and at least 1,000 horsepower.
24:30So we got our engine back from the paint shop.
24:33Nice and red, just like the Little Red Express.
24:36Time to put this thing together.
24:38Get these main caps off, get ready to put our crank in.
24:42Each one of them are numbered.
24:44These are individually honed for each portion of the block, so it's got to go back exactly how you take it off.
24:50So I have my machina line holding this block, but just in the time from the machine shop to here, you see that little bit of surface rust on here?
25:02I'll take it over here with some Scotts Bry and I'll buff these.
25:05Make sure there's no debris and it's true.
25:08These little steps right here will make your engine last a lot longer.
25:14We got all our upper main bearings in.
25:16We got them all clean.
25:17I'm fixing to lubricate them.
25:18We're going to take the crank.
25:20We're going to clean the crank.
25:23Set it in here.
25:25And then we'll do our lower main bearings, fork it down, and this part will be done.
25:39You know what this feels like?
25:41This feels like horse power.
25:44Right here we've got our stock 12-valve cam, and there we've got our new cam that we're custom cut for this engine.
25:52Now we've got to take this gear off of the stock cam and put on our new cam.
25:58I started my shop doing plastic cars, Cobra kit cars, Vipers, and then Chase, his first vehicle, he fixed it and then he kept doing modifications to it.
26:10And it got faster and faster.
26:12So then I had to learn how to make a transmission hold that much power.
26:16That's basically when we first got into diesels, and Chase has pushed the envelope each time, and I've had to make my stuff stay together so he wouldn't tear it up.
26:25And then Clay, bless his heart, he's usually the test dummy.
26:28He's the one that gets to drive them first to make sure nothing's going to break or tear up.
26:33And then we ease Chase into it because we know Chase is going to break it.
26:37So we have our piston here.
26:39There's a little oil on here.
26:43When we build these engines and they turn way more RPM than what they were designed to, we have to have everything perfect.
26:49So as we add a part, we're going to rotate this and make sure we don't have any kind of binding.
26:54Because any little thing that binds this engine is going to rob you horsepower and it's going to wear.
27:00I really like this, it feels good.
27:02So anyway, we got one in.
27:04We got to do this five more times.
27:15My dad and Robert need to make one more repair to the axles on the late crosser.
27:19This one here we just pulled off this truck.
27:21You see it's wore out.
27:22Looks like the needles fell out of it.
27:24You see it's loose.
27:25That was probably making noise, but they didn't care as long as it keeps going.
27:29We're going to have to replace this end for sure.
27:32Hey!
27:34The die grinder?
27:35Yep.
27:36Need to get the die grinder in here and clean this up a little bit.
27:39Well, that's bad right there.
27:40Yeah.
27:41Look at that dent.
27:42I see it.
27:44All right.
27:45Let's see what we got.
27:46Ready?
27:47Yes, sir.
27:51See if we can get the usual one out.
27:53There we go.
27:54Yeah, there we go.
27:55Okay.
27:56Get these caps off of here.
27:57Make sure all the needles are in there.
27:59See how we beat the other one apart and the needles fell apart because it was no good.
28:03This one here is still good.
28:05All the needles need to be in place.
28:07If they fall over, you can't get it together.
28:09Here's some grease.
28:10Help hold them together.
28:11Right there.
28:15Come on.
28:16All right.
28:17See if it'll take a clip.
28:18You got to try doing this at the mud park when you don't have the good tools.
28:22Been there, buddy.
28:23Mm-hmm.
28:24This one's good to go.
28:25It's nice, tight, not making no noise.
28:31All right.
28:32I guess we're ready for our planetary.
28:34Oh, yeah.
28:35You know, this Samurai, it only came with this baby little four-cylinder engine.
28:38Man, that sucker looks heavy.
28:39There is absolutely no way it has the power to turn these giant wheels and drive across the lake.
28:43And that's why we're installing planetaries to increase the gear ratio and strength.
28:48Use my fat gut to hold it.
28:50Ready?
28:51All right.
28:54Been good?
28:55Oh, yeah. She turning.
28:56Oh, yeah.
28:57Oh, yeah. That's going to work.
28:59What we've done here now is essentially this is a 670 gear.
29:03Where so basically this drive shaft turns 6.7 times for every one time this axle spins.
29:08But then we multiply that again times three.
29:10So now our gear ratio is almost 20 to 1.
29:13So this drive shaft is going to spin 20 times for every one time the wheel spins.
29:17That's going to give us all the gear ratio and reduction we need for this little four-cylinder to turn a monster tire.
29:22So Daniel, he put me on a little mission to find some R2 tires.
29:34They have a better bite in the mud than the R1s.
29:37A lot of places like up in Florida, Louisiana, that area, they run this type of tire because of the swampland.
29:44But we're going to give it a try right here in this Texas mud.
29:47Headed back to the shop with them right now and see how they fit.
29:52What you think of them, Daniel? Them thick enough?
29:56Man, I think those will work.
29:57I'll tell you what, going from that tire to that, I mean, he's probably going to gain four to five foot of ground clearance with these.
30:04Ooh, these babies are big.
30:11How about that?
30:13No more.
30:14That's all I got, buddy.
30:16Whoo!
30:17Look at that.
30:18Look how much bigger that is.
30:20That looks pretty cool.
30:23Now you can clearly see why we need these planetaries.
30:26I mean, these tires are ridiculous.
30:28They're over six feet tall.
30:29There's no way they would have been able to turn them without these.
30:33We finished up the axle on the late crossing.
30:46We got one thing left.
30:48We're going to go ahead and give those old wheels a little bit of style and protection.
30:53We're going to go ahead and cut them a rock ring with the name of his truck in it, which is called pocket change.
31:02The rock ring will protect the beat of the wheel, because if you bend the beat of the wheel, then the tire's coming off, the air's coming out.
31:08It just creates problems.
31:10So we're making one for each wheel well, and then we're sending them off to powder coat, and this truck is done.
31:14Today is the big day.
31:20We're bringing out Chris' samurai, and we're going to try it out.
31:23What up, Chris?
31:24What's going on, Dave?
31:25How you doing, man?
31:26Hey.
31:27Day has come.
31:28We got you ready, man.
31:29We got you ready.
31:30Is that so?
31:31Oh, yeah.
31:32Big tires?
31:33Big tires.
31:34Oh, probably this big.
31:35Like, I can run you over big tires?
31:36Yes, you can run me over and never even know it.
31:37Let me see it then.
31:38I'm ready.
31:39Let me see that thing.
31:40All right.
31:41Day though.
31:42Bring it out.
31:45Look at them tires.
31:46Man, that is insane.
31:48That is crazy.
31:49Look how big the thing is.
31:51Look at those tires.
31:53Man, I can't believe it.
31:56Man, that thing is like a Tonka toy.
32:00I couldn't believe it was my truck.
32:01It's bigger than my camper.
32:03What's up, Chris?
32:04What's going on, Daniel?
32:05What you think, man?
32:07Yeah.
32:08That thing is big, Daniel.
32:10You need a ladder?
32:11You weren't expecting that, were you?
32:13I did not expect that.
32:14What's up, bro?
32:15How you doing?
32:16What's up?
32:17Good.
32:18What's up, Dan?
32:19What's up?
32:20I like it.
32:21I really like it.
32:22I figure, you know, you like to do it big,
32:23so we give you the biggest Samurai I know of.
32:25Of course, we did these massive wheels and tires.
32:27I want to say they measure around 70 to 74 inches tall,
32:30which is ridiculous.
32:31About 1,200 pounds a piece.
32:32It blows people's mind that it even fit on a Samurai.
32:34I know you're wondering how that four-cylinder's
32:36is going to spin these things.
32:37Yeah.
32:38We had to go ahead and upgrade.
32:39Went ahead and put you a five-ton planetary on the outer.
32:42Kept your same two-and-a-half-ton in the center here.
32:44You know, these things kind of have a reputation.
32:46People call them hater kits.
32:47So I'm going to have haters now?
32:48Yep.
32:49They're going to be jealous they see this.
32:50Man, we also did a little custom for you,
32:53because I know you like to call this thing pocket change.
32:55Oh, man.
32:56So we made you cut you out a custom rock ring here.
32:58We cut these out on our plasma table.
33:00Hey, them wheels was ugly.
33:01Now, check that out.
33:02That way you look good while you're competing, you know?
33:04Oh, man.
33:05Well, let's test it.
33:06David and Daniel killed it on this build.
33:09I asked for the biggest and baddest Samurai,
33:11and they did that.
33:12This is a completely different truck than what I had before.
33:18Man, this thing drives like a dream.
33:20Big tires.
33:21We love the rock rings on there.
33:23Pocket change.
33:24I mean, we got plenty of pocket change around here.
33:28David and Daniel better watch out,
33:29because next competition, I'm taking first.
33:32You know, all in all,
33:33I think we gave Chris exactly what he wanted.
33:35Man, that's a whole lot of truck.
33:36You know, it don't weigh nothing.
33:37If there's water in it, it's going to float.
33:39And I tell you what, that Samurai's going to go places.
33:42We built Chris one of the biggest Samurais we've ever seen.
33:45I think he'll be able to take anything we throw at him.
33:48But, hey, you got to let Chris know the water is not a lubricant.
33:51We're going to sit on the ground,
33:55bring the cab in over it so we don't trip over it,
33:57and then pick the cab up,
33:58and then put it on jack stands.
33:59So today, we got the frame coming back from powder coat,
34:01and we got the cab coming back from paint.
34:03I need you to work for it, son.
34:04This is one of my favorite days.
34:05You know, you get to see the vision become reality.
34:07And, man, it really gets me excited.
34:09We went with a black frame, a red cab,
34:11to give it the light.
34:12And, man, it really gets me excited.
34:14We went with a black frame, a red cab,
34:16to give it the light.
34:17We went with a black frame, a red cab,
34:19to give it that pop.
34:21Now that we got everything back,
34:23man, we can start rocking and rolling,
34:25and I cannot wait to put that engine in there.
34:27All right, let's do it.
34:29Roll it over.
34:31Okay.
34:33Never have this thing too clean.
34:37Clay, you know, he's my little brother,
34:39and we've been working side by side since we started this company.
34:41Went from holding the flashlight,
34:43now you can put an engine together, you know?
34:45Just being around this stuff, you know,
34:47it just rubs off.
34:48And it's addictive building a diesel truck, you know?
34:51Once you fill it, you want more.
34:52You want it to go faster.
34:53And Clay definitely caught on to that.
34:59All right.
35:00I'm about to put on our billet tappet cover.
35:03This is a breather for the crankcase, basically.
35:05I got a tappet cover hot and ready here.
35:07Whenever your cylinders are going up and down,
35:09they create pressure.
35:10That pressure doesn't always go up where it needs to go.
35:13Sometimes it builds up in the crank.
35:15So this helps relieve that pressure.
35:17This will also add a little strength.
35:22We're installing our billet freeze plugs.
35:24These are designed for high horsepower applications.
35:27Whenever the coolant in the truck, if it ever froze,
35:29it has a way to escape so it doesn't bust the block.
35:32Right here, we have our engine mounts.
35:34These are custom-made with a neoprene bushing in them.
35:36So they dampen it and keep it from being an unpleasant ride.
35:39Whoa, careful.
35:40All right, push it over, bro.
35:41And they can handle the power we're going to throw at them
35:43and keep it from moving too much.
35:48Man, this thing looks killer.
35:49It's like a puzzle going together.
35:50You see each piece being put back on.
35:53I'm so excited to see the next step, you know,
35:55and that's going to be us putting this transmission in.
35:59All right, so now we've got our 47RE transmission
36:02for the Lillard Express.
36:04This is going to be a show quality.
36:06These are aluminum, cast aluminum cases,
36:08and we'll polish them.
36:09They turn out really nice.
36:11With that said, we're going to start putting this together.
36:14When we first got into diesels,
36:16these transmissions were, you know, $15,000, $20,000.
36:21So I had to learn how to build them and make them stay.
36:25It's got to hold 1,000 horsepower,
36:27so I better be on point.
36:31I enjoy it.
36:32I've done it my whole life,
36:33and I never get tired of doing it.
36:35Especially now, I get to do it with my sons.
36:37It's rewarding.
36:38Special delivery.
36:39Heck, yeah.
36:47She's home.
36:48This thing looks good, man.
36:50Yeah, it does, huh?
36:51I love the way this thing's looking.
36:52It looks fast already.
36:55What the heck?
37:08So today, we're putting our compound turbos
37:11on the Little Red Express.
37:13So a compound turbo setup is two turbos,
37:16but it's not like your typical twin turbo setup
37:19where they're both the same size.
37:21Compound turbo setup has a small turbo
37:24and a big turbo.
37:25So this is our high-pressure turbo.
37:27This is the turbo that starts to spool first.
37:29Air comes out of the exhaust side,
37:31drives it through here,
37:32and spools this turbo up.
37:34This is big daddy.
37:35This one here is going to make all the horsepower
37:38once it takes over from this one.
37:40But if you mounted it straight on the manifold,
37:42it would be really slow to spool.
37:43It'd have terrible street manner.
37:44It would be smoky, lazy,
37:46but when you combine the two together,
37:48that's when the magic happens.
37:50That's when you have a real quick spooling setup,
37:52drivable, and super, super torquey.
37:55They're just a lot of fun to drive.
37:56So basically, One Way Diesel got to start from my first truck,
38:01old Funky Monkey.
38:02When I was about 11 or 12, my dad had a Cummins,
38:05and I told him, I want a truck just like this.
38:07Fast forward five or six years later,
38:09I came to my dad, and he said,
38:10hey, if you figure out how to fix that truck,
38:13that could be your first truck.
38:15And I said, deal.
38:16Got the truck running.
38:18Immediately, I started building injectors,
38:20massive turbo custom one-off block,
38:22huge injectors, lots of nitrous.
38:24It started at 235 horsepower,
38:26and it's making a whopping 2,730 horsepower.
38:29The sound this thing makes is insane.
38:31When it's turning 6,000 RPMs,
38:33there's nothing like it.
38:35And the crazy thing is,
38:36it makes that kind of power,
38:38has AC, still street drivable.
38:40I can take, you know, my wife and kids out to Dairy Queen
38:42and go through the drive-thru.
38:43And the crazy thing is,
38:44it makes that kind of power,
38:45has AC, still street drivable.
38:46I can take, you know,
38:47and go through the drive-thru.
38:48Wax the old dude in his supercar,
38:50driving back home.
38:51I love this truck.
38:52It's what I did with my first truck,
38:54that gave me the notoriety to start this business.
39:03Everything's coming together on this 79 Little Red Express.
39:07The bed,
39:10the interior,
39:13and we got the custom airbrushing on the doors
39:15with the old logo.
39:16And of course,
39:17as a final piece,
39:18we're fabricating the stacks.
39:20Back in 1970s,
39:22when these came out,
39:23the most iconic thing about them was the stacks.
39:25A red pickup,
39:26there was a Dodge,
39:27they knew instantly it was a Little Red Express.
39:29But we're going to give it a custom flare,
39:31you know,
39:32kind of give it that.
39:33Raw,
39:34mean,
39:35I make a lot of power to look.
39:36Today's a big day.
39:48Yes it is.
39:49We get to reveal the Little Red Express to Johnny,
39:51and I can't wait to see his face when he sees it for the first time.
39:53I can't wait to see his face after you hammer on it for the first time.
39:57That's my favorite part.
39:58Let him feel the power,
39:59because it's not something you get to drive every day.
40:02We didn't put no old crap handles in there.
40:04Nope.
40:05Yeah, we got to keep it clean, you know?
40:06Yeah, yeah.
40:07You're here early.
40:08I'm excited.
40:09I bet.
40:10So I've had this truck for such a long time,
40:12it just blows my mind that today is the day that I'm going to actually get to see it.
40:15I'm going to tell you this.
40:16You gave us very little to work with on this thing.
40:19We pulled it off.
40:20You ready to look at it?
40:21I'm ready, man. I'm ready.
40:22Well, let's go look at it.
40:23Let's go.
40:25Tell me when.
40:27What do you think?
40:29Oh, my God.
40:31That is freaking amazing.
40:33When I walked around the corner and seen that truck for the first time,
40:36it was beyond my expectations.
40:38I couldn't believe that that was what came out of all those parts that I gave them.
40:42A hunk of junk turned into that.
40:45Y'all did a great job.
40:47We start off with a bare frame.
40:48You know, we had to four link it, coilovers in the front, all new suspension,
40:52then the fun part.
40:53We got to the engines.
40:59That is insane.
41:01We went with the 12 valve Cummins.
41:03Oh, wow.
41:04This is old school, completely rebuilt.
41:05We've got valve springs, cam, new pistons, with my little secret sauce on the rings.
41:10You know, this thing's going to make tons of horsepower.
41:12We did a custom compound turbo setup.
41:14This thing's making right around 1,100 horsepower.
41:17Holy cow.
41:181,100 horses in a 1,000-pound truck.
41:20And it is going to be a rocket.
41:23Oh, my God.
41:24They nailed it with the 12 valve.
41:26No computerized anything on it.
41:27And those big compound turbos, we got 1,000 horsepower there, baby.
41:32Oh, my goodness, that is clean.
41:37Slick black on black with red accents.
41:40That is exactly what I want to do.
41:41Clean, simple, little details that just take it a long way.
41:45Man, that steering wheel looks amazing.
41:47That is perfect.
41:48One of the other cool things we did on this truck, I had a friend of mine airbrush the original decal for the Little Red Express.
41:55Wow.
41:56Really?
41:57You know, the problem with these is they would flake off.
41:58Just peel off.
41:59Yeah, right.
42:00We wanted to fix all the problems they had, bring it back to the modern times, but still keep the originality of the Little Red Express.
42:06And speaking of originality, you can't not have these on there.
42:10Uh-huh.
42:11That's for sure.
42:12Back in the day when these were new, everybody wanted them because they had stacked.
42:16Yep.
42:17As a young kid, we wanted to be loud and proud.
42:19Yeah.
42:20So now we're going to be loud and proud with the diesel.
42:22There you go.
42:23One more thing, this custom wood bed.
42:26Holy cow, man.
42:27That is neat.
42:28Yeah, we actually burnt the wood to give it that look.
42:30Man, that gas tank lid looks cool as well.
42:32Just blends in perfectly with chrome in there.
42:34That's exactly right.
42:35You know, just little touches here and there just to give it some character.
42:38Give it a tone.
42:39Yep.
42:40That is killer, man.
42:41That is cool.
42:42It is pristine.
42:43They did an awesome job.
42:44I want to thank every one of them.
42:45I came to the right place.
42:46I trusted the guys, and they came through for me.
42:48Can't wait to see how fast this joker is.
42:50Why don't you ride with me one time?
42:51No problem.
42:52I'll show you what it can do.
42:53Then I'll hand you the keys.
42:54No problem.
42:55You ready?
42:56I'm ready.
42:57You ain't never experienced this before.
42:58Oh, I can't wait.
42:59You know, it's one thing to tell a customer it's making this kind of horsepower.
43:14It's another to let them experience it and be there to witness it.
43:18You ready to feel this?
43:19Yep.
43:23Oh, man.
43:24That is so exciting, ain't it?
43:25Definitely want to thank our team, though, Dad.
43:27We couldn't have done it without them.
43:28You know, Clay and the guys, everybody just stepped up.
43:31We're so happy.
