00:00Coach, we take a look also at a big game environment tonight, LSU going to take on Clemson.
00:04You're no stranger to hammering LSU at this point, Coach, because in 1993, you went to
00:10LSU, 34-10 victory for the Auburn Tigers, so you have the keys to the castle, as we
00:15like to say.
00:16What happens tonight between LSU and Clemson?
00:18What a game, the battle of the Death Valleys.
00:21Yeah, I had success at that Death Valley.
00:23There's other Death Valleys pretty tough, too.
00:25I was an analyst up there a couple of years ago for two years, and they never lost the
00:29end time I was there at home.
00:31It's an incredible environment there for home field advantage, and that's going to be a
00:35factor.
00:35These two teams, they mirror each other.
00:38They both have quarterbacks that can win the Heisman, that can get drafted in the first round.
00:42They've got much improved teams.
00:44They've got outstanding defensive coordinators that they've added, Blake Baker at LSU, and
00:50now Tom Allen at Clemson, so they have improved defenses.
00:54They've got great quarterbacks.
00:56You look at all the advantage, just a little bit of advantage to me goes to Clemson.
01:00I said, boy, the quarterback's just a little bit better.
01:02The overall depth is better.
01:04The home field advantage is a little bit better, but when that point spread went to four, I
01:10got to take LSU plus four points.
01:12I think that's the thing.
01:13I can see them losing the game, but much more like a field goal.
01:16Once it went to four, I had to jump over and say, that's the one I want to win this game.
01:20Coach, from the coaching perspective, what can Brian Kelly and LSU do, not to just cover
01:26the line, but potentially win this ballgame outright?
01:31You know, Joe, and we've talked about this a lot this year, all these outstanding quarterbacks,
01:35if you want to make them better, make them a factor, run the football.
01:39We saw a couple of games last night, Georgia Tech, we saw them play.
01:43We saw the other game that we watched where the running was Auburn.
01:46Running makes the quarterback better.
01:48Running gives them a chance to hurt people when they are worried about the run.
01:52To me, the key to this game and the key to making Nussmire even a better quarterback is
01:57what they didn't do last year.
01:59When you can't run the ball, you throw it on third and long, or you throw it a bunch
02:03in the second half.
02:04As it happened to LSU last year, it turns into turnovers and mistakes.
02:09It's all about being balanced, but LSU has a chance to be balanced.
02:13I think the offensive line probably goes to Clemson over LSU.
02:16They lost their tackles, but I do think running game is key for Nussmire to have the game
02:21that can win this game.
02:22Talking to Terry Bowden here, long-time great head coach in college football, multiple institutions,
02:27which is the perfect person to ask.
02:28Coach, did you prefer, because we're talking about week number one, a lot of these schools
02:31with big-time matchups.
02:33Did you like the big-time matchup out of the gate, or did you prefer maybe a team that you
02:36can handle just to get a good view of your team before you said, okay, the big boys are
02:40coming next week?
02:42It all depends on whether you ask me that question in August or in December, or February, because
02:46way back there, you say, gosh, I'll take the biggest and the best, but about a month before
02:52that season opens, you want somebody that you can make mistakes and win the ballgame.
02:56You just want somebody to see what you're going to look like.
02:58So I think most coaches, whether they say it publicly, they would rather play somebody
03:02that they can handle pretty well if they play well, and then feel like what kind of team
03:06they got, but if you got a biggie like this one, it prepares you the entire offseason.
03:11It gets your players' attention.
03:13We'll see, I believe, the best of these two football teams.
