00:00as this is okay pretty easy time to today's tears mass what is the subject uh best and worst red
00:07socks trades red socks trades in tears and when i say best and worst it's more than two tears
00:12because of how much that crawls up your backside so here's what we did we uh i went i limited it
00:18to 20 okay and i did five per tier starting with the best going down to the worst and i gave titles
00:26to the two in between which we'll get to when we get there okay so tier one excellent best trades in
00:32red socks history i'll try to go quickly here these are pretty obvious pedro martinez for
00:37provano and armis shilling for a fossum lion and a bunch of scrubs from the arizona or to the arizona
00:44diamondbacks let me just say that usually we say horses for ponies like getting shilling as a horse
00:49those are ponies in the case of shilling they gave up puppies puppies for a horse i always thought
00:57that was a trade but as much of a free agent pickup as anything he was up for a contract right well so
01:03he was in the final year and then they tacked on two one of the great things about that deal that
01:08contract was that there was a clause in it that would increase the value two million per year if
01:15they won the world series and uh shilling was willing to engage on that and then they won it
01:19and he got the got his extra money so but that was that's that trade was a steal uh getting uh
01:25derrick lowe and jason veritek for heathcliff slocum one of the great heists in red sox history
01:30chris sale for joan mancada and michael kopech good deal i would say not quite as good as the others
01:36and the normal garcia power deal in 2004 for minkiewicz and cabrera was really addition by subtraction
01:43doesn't qualify with some of those other deals in terms of the acquisition but the timing of it the
01:49ballsy nature of it and it ended up being a uh you know a franchise altering kind of trade he was
01:54such a pill at the end yeah so it was just it was really what that trade meant more than who you got
01:5921 years ago today by the way was that right oh no kidding i remember it i remember it well uh tier two
02:06better than they get credit for okay meaning the red sox should get more credit for these deals
02:11than they do uh mike bodiker for brady anderson and kurt schilling now young people will say oh
02:17that's a stupid trade bodiker was terrific here he was excellent he was the perfect number two starter
02:24for roger clemens and schilling didn't turn into anything until several years later with the phillies
02:30he changed organizations two more times before he became good uh the uh the dump the salary dump deal
02:38with the dodgers gonzalez beckett carl crawford you got nothing back in this deal but you dumped
02:44all the money for the health of the red sox not just economically but in terms of rebuilding
02:50it was a significant trade in the first big step uh 1986 mike easler for don baylor don baylor
02:58ended up becoming a clubhouse leader was a huge factor on that team they got to the world series
03:03obviously almost won it a sneaky good deal in red sox history dennis eckersley for again ponies
03:10rick wise ted cox bo diaz mike mike paxton that was in 1978 akin to the pedro deal deals like that
03:18eck was a legit ace yeah back then and i think the nathan evaldi deal for jalen beaks ended up being a
03:25terrific terrific trade for them in lots of ways he was a good pickup that season they ended up
03:31resigning him he became a fan favorite and really became kind of a model for their pitching staff a
03:37guy that was very well respected so i give them a huge check mark for the nathan evaldi deal now
03:43we get to tier three sneaky bad sneaky bad hanley ramirez and annabelle sanchez for josh beckett and
03:52mike lowell yeah maz what do you mean that one of the world series okay beckett never really
03:59materialized into what he was supposed to do they did win the one lowell they signed to another
04:03contract which was a mistake did you know that in addition to hanley ramirez they give up annabelle
04:09sanchez hanley ramirez is one of only two dozen players in major league history with 250 home runs
04:18and 250 stolen bases with the marlins he was basically a perennial all-star an mvp candidate
04:24uh and one of those guys by the way with the 250 homers and 250 steals is robin yow okay so hanley
04:31early in his career was an excellent excellent player annabelle sanchez pitched in the big leagues
04:36for 16 seasons so that was not just some throw in they gave up two legitimate young players
04:43in that trade uh manny ramirez for jason bay in 2008 stupid stupid stupid trade everybody hated manny
04:52the fact is as soon as they traded him they stopped winning world series until 2013 when they got
04:58lucky so manny was a huge part of what they did uh and giving him giving him away at that stage when
05:04he was going to be gone at the end of the season anyway was a mistake i put this on the list because
05:10i think they're going to miss him in the long run devers to the giants i understand the culture thing i
05:16understand all of that it was a massive giveaway and i don't like it when the red sox dump talent
05:21uh the adrian gonzalez acquisition in retrospect wouldn't you have been better off just keeping
05:27anthony rizzo yes yes thousand percent so now that one is hindsight okay but it's all we got now
05:33rizzo proved to be a real winner what's wrong with hindsight nothing i mean that's what that's
05:40though that's the game when you trade a future if the future becomes greater than the player you
05:44acquired in the now it's a bad trade absolutely it works and they had to get out of gonzalez quickly
05:50because he was such a pill but anthony rizzo in retrospect would have been the better uh keep
05:55and a better fit yes definitely absolutely and then finally fred lynn for uh joe rudy and frank
06:03tinana this trade took place i believe in 1980 or 1981 and i say a lot of people will say well lynn
06:09was broken down a lot it wasn't worth keeping him do you know what fred lynn's career batting average
06:14was at fenway park have you ever heard this no take a guess 350 345 wow 345 third highest all time
06:24behind ted williams and jimmy fox and boggs okay even better than bugs wow so uh fred lynn was a
06:32perfect fit for fenway letting him go was a major major mistake in red sox history not a fun one
06:38worst trades in red sox history one of which is obvious goes at the top of the list babe ruth
06:43traded for cash to the new york yankees you can call it a sale in this day we would say he was
06:50traded for cash considerations mookie betts number two jeff bagwell for larry anderson one of the great
06:56giveaways in any franchise's history uh and a couple of smaller ones that people overlook here's one for
07:03you mike cecil cooper and bernie carbo for george scott george scott had one good year after he
07:10rejoined the red sox from the milwaukee brewers cecil cooper turned into a perennial all-star almost
07:15won us the championship he was a terrific terrific hitter i don't remember carbo doing anything no he
07:21was a throw-in i just put his name on there because he was in the deal i frankly don't remember him
07:25playing i i didn't i forgot that he was part of that but go ahead but the deal was really cooper for scott
07:31yeah and cooper was terrific for the brewers for about 10 years he was about he was a poor man's
07:35rod crew it was terrific and this is one that nobody ever talks about because at the time
07:39none of us understood what it was jamie maurier traded away for darren bragg i believe that was in
07:471996 jamie maurier went on to win 250 career games 145 of them with the mariners became a franchise icon
07:56up there was a cy young finalist basically for a number of those years with seattle soft throwing
08:02lefty some of it was the fit in seattle but jamie maurier ended up being really really good okay there
08:09you go all-time red sox trades in tears best down to the worst
08:13you
