Care Minister Stephen Kinnock defended the government’s decision to appeal a ruling against the use of a hotel in Epping to house asylum seekers, saying it has a legal duty to prevent people from becoming destitute.

00:00The government has a statutory obligation to house asylum seekers.
00:05They're not allowed to work.
00:06So if you don't house them, they become destitute and living on the streets.
00:11And that clearly is not something that we could tolerate.
00:15So that's why we are appealing this decision, because if every hotel then just starts discharging asylum seekers without the Home Office being able to coordinate and manage that process, you're going to have a really, really big problem.
00:30So that's why the government is making that case clearly.
00:33The views and concerns of local communities are absolutely vital in all of this.
00:41We share those frustrations and that's why we're taking the action that we're taking.
