Hurricane Erin swept away parts of popular New Jersey beaches, carving away dunes and washing out walkways.
Transcript
00:00It's been nearly a week since Hurricane Aaron's winds and strong surf pounded the coastline here in New Jersey.
00:06Some of those scars still visible as of today.
00:10From Cape May to Monmouth County, dunes have been carved away and walkways washed out.
00:15Now, towns are racing to restore as much access as possible before the crowds arrive this weekend.
00:21When Hurricane Aaron swept past the Jersey Shore on August 21st, it brought tropical storm-like conditions.
00:26Pounding surf, strong winds and coastal flooding that swamped streets in places like Wildwood, Avalon, Margate and Ocean City.
00:34Miles of shoreline were reshaped in the process because of what you're seeing on your screen now.
00:39Beaches lost large stretches of sand and dunes were carved into steep cliffs, in some spots rising six to eight feet high.
00:47Heavy equipment is now being used to push sand back into place,
00:50rebuilding walkways that were washed out and restoring access points that visitors depend on.
00:55Local officials here say a dozen access paths were rendered unusable.
01:00And while several have already been reopened, others will remain blocked off for the weekend.
01:04For now, the goal is simple, to open as many beach access points to get them as safe as possible
01:10for those coming to the beach this weekend for Labor Day.
