00:00.
00:00.
00:10That's huge.
00:13Oh, good hit.
00:15Oh, that's out.
00:18Oh, what about that?
00:23Hi, everybody.
00:24Welcome to Cricket on 5.
00:25This is the first of three T20 internationals between England and South Africa.
00:29We're at the Aegeus Bowl, just outside Southampton, and conditions are perfect.
00:34A really beautiful, warm summer's evening.
00:36Both teams with so much to think about because they're disappointed in the Champions Trophy.
00:41Owen Morgan surely must be confused up here.
00:44He didn't get what he wanted out of his 50-over team, so can he get more from his T20 team?
00:49Both sides have new players on view.
00:52The toss won by A.B. de Villiers, and he had a chat with me straight after that toss.
00:56A nice evening for batting.
00:57Definitely, yes. Won the toss, batting first.
01:01The idea with that is we're playing three really good spinners,
01:04and I feel we can squeeze really well defending a total with those spinners on the team.
01:08So many new faces.
01:10Quite a few, four of them, that you guys are probably not familiar with.
01:13Well, Shamsie is one, which you have seen before.
01:16And then both the openers are pretty new.
01:18John John Smuts and Riza Hendricks have done exceptionally well back home.
01:21And the new wicketkeeper, Mangeliza Mosegle, also a very talented young player.
01:25He's done very well back home, and excited to see them perform tonight.
01:28We have to say the Champions Trophy ended up a disappointment for you.
01:32Is this the feeling of something new again?
01:34It definitely helps to get some new faces in a new series.
01:38It's great to get started, to get going again.
01:41Yeah, the Champions Trophy was a big disappointment.
01:43It's a horrible few days that we went through now.
01:45But we passed that, and it's past tense.
01:48We've got an opportunity to play a good game of cricket in the South African clothing.
01:51Well, as A.B. de Villiers pointed out, new faces.
01:55He himself is key to this performance today, I think, along with David Miller and Ferran Behardin.
02:01Wayne Parnell, we know.
02:03Imran Tahir, of course, has enough experience there to carry the side.
02:06But, boy, this is a splendid opportunity for England.
02:10Would you have liked to have batted first?
02:12No, we actually would have bowled first.
02:13I think the wicket's a really good wicket and hopefully won't change throughout the 40 overs.
02:18So, again, chasing has been a strong part of our success in T20 cricket, and we would have liked to have bowled, so it doesn't really bother.
02:26The Champions Trophy didn't end up as you'd hoped.
02:28How have you recovered from that?
02:30Yeah, pretty well.
02:31We're actually lucky that we have cricket to come straight back into things.
02:34I think if we were sitting around for a long time separately as a group, as opposed to being together, it would hurt us a bit more.
02:40Obviously, we didn't perform in Cardiff like we'd have hoped.
02:43Pakistan outplayed us on a day where we had a really bad day and, obviously, very worthy champions are turning over experienced Indian side.
02:51So, I thought we were still on the upward curve.
02:54We played some great cricket in the group stages of that, and hopefully we've got stuff to build on towards the World Cup.
02:59Some different cricketers today, not least Mason Crane, a favourite son on this field.
03:04He is.
03:04Making your debut on home soil is obviously comforting to see a young guy coming through and be a true, genuine leg spinner and want to master his art at a very young age is very impressive.
03:18And it brings great energy to the side as well.
03:21Yes, England's opportunity comes from so much power in the batting.
03:25Of course, they failed in that match in Cardiff in the Champions Trophy, as Owen Morgan just alluded to.
03:31But a great deal of talent and experience all the way down Morgan's team.
03:36Here we go, it's David Willey to bowl to John John Smuts.
03:46He's got it in first ball! What a start for England!
03:50The dragon back onto the stumps.
03:54Wow, incredible.
03:56And David Willey, who hasn't swung a ball for quite a while,
04:00has made this one come back in a little bit to the batsman, John John Smuts.
04:05He's looking for that in-swinger from over the wicket and it just held its line a little tiny bit there,
04:12took the inside edge, cannoned into the stumps.
04:14What a fantastic start for England and Willey, who's been fairly impotent the last couple of weeks,
04:19but that's a really fine start for England.
04:22Smuts goes for Nort, Nort for one!
04:24Well, there comes the star player for South Africa, A.B. de Ville is the captain.
04:32He had a difficult time of it, both as a team and as a player in the Champions Trophy.
04:38But he should fancy this tonight, it looks a good pitch.
04:43Well, Owen Morgan on the attack to Mark Wood, two slips in place.
04:46And that goes straight to mid-wicket, forget the slips.
04:55Just put him on it, straight mid-wicket, David Willey's the catcher.
05:00Sharp work, and Mark Wood is the beneficiary there of a sort of fairly ordinary exploratory sort of delivery.
05:06That's the view from umpire Cannes, good view in fact.
05:13Smart bit of reflex work from David Willey.
05:17And second South African wicket on the way back.
05:20Seven now for two, Hendricks out for three.
05:26Now look at this to A.B. de Ville, three slips in place.
05:29Take that, Mark Wood. Take that, Owen Morgan.
05:35You can have your three slips, you bowl a ball like this.
05:38This lad is a wonderful player.
05:40Not been in tremendous form, but he will fancy this this evening.
05:44Well, that shot is worth the admission money alone.
05:47Fast delivery from Mark Wood, 89 miles an hour.
05:50Straight, a good bit of extra bounce.
05:52And he just gets up on his toes, makes himself just an ounce of room
05:55and forces it away in mid-air through backward point for four.
06:00Fantastic.
06:09That's another crunching shot for A.B. de Villiers.
06:12Again, width and offer from Mark Wood.
06:16Yeah, it's partly the length as well.
06:17He's just looking for anything slightly short to have a go at.
06:21He's almost just giving himself a tiny bit of room when the ball's banged in.
06:25Well, what a strike.
06:33That's going to be the first maximum.
06:34It's just a punch.
06:36A punch straight over mid-off.
06:40Well, you just think as a bowler, what did I do wrong?
06:43Well, actually, the answer is nothing.
06:45Just a good length.
06:46Maybe just a touch outside off stump.
06:49And suddenly you go back with six against your name.
06:51Well, when you lose two wickets, the old days of just knocking it around
06:55for ones and twos to get a partnership.
06:57Not these days.
06:57You just dance down and whack it into the stands.
07:10Beautiful swing of the bat.
07:12One bounce, four for de Villiers.
07:13It's the pace again of Mark Wood that's so crucial really to England in one day cricket.
07:37It's got this ability from not really any warm-up deliveries or looseners.
07:42He just suddenly produces a zippy ball, which cuts this batsman, David Miller, in two.
07:48So strong in the shoulder and the delivery there.
07:51He just got through Miller before he got the bat down.
07:54A little bit of an edge.
07:55Buda Doss, Butler, simple catch.
07:5732 for three now, South Africa.
07:59Miller out for nine.
08:00Well, England on the attack.
08:08Oh, that's brutal.
08:10What a ball that is from Mark Wood.
08:12Berhad in to the crease, South Africa.
08:1432 for three and all sorts of trouble.
08:17And Mark Whitwood unleashes a short ball that rises sharply.
08:23Certainly don't want to get this first ball when you just come in and you're just sort of thinking,
08:27I might have a little side turn.
08:28And suddenly you've got one almost in front of your nose.
08:33Well, look at this.
08:34Oye Morgan's on the charges.
08:35He's brought third man up into the circle.
08:37He's putting Bairstow out at deep square leg.
08:39There's a fine leg back as well.
08:41Only two fielders outside the circle for the first six overs.
08:45He's got two slips and a gully catching.
08:47A leg gully.
08:48This is like a test match field.
08:51And there you go.
08:52Short attacking him.
08:55It was a lucky escape, actually, for Bardeen.
08:58Because that could have gone anywhere.
09:00Just fell safe.
09:05Wide of the slip fielder there.
09:07And four for Berhad in.
09:09He was a little bit lucky.
09:12He was just rushed by that delivery by Chris Jordan.
09:15Oh, I don't know.
09:17I'm going to go with quality batting.
09:19I think he...
09:20I hear what you say, but I do think that he...
09:23Yeah, I think he's trying to hit that there.
09:26I think that's off the blade.
09:27And I think we'll give him some credit, if you don't mind yours.
09:33Now, this is an exciting moment for all Hampshire fans.
09:38And I should think, Mark Nicklaus in particular, Mason Crane, to bowl his first ball in international cricket.
09:43He's impressed a lot of people around the world, hasn't he?
09:44Yeah, he has.
09:46He actually...
09:47He originated from Sussex, but moved here because he wasn't getting the exposure to a county-level cricket as he grew up.
09:55Anyway, he came to Hampshire as a young guy.
09:57He's done remarkably well.
09:58And his story of the last year is quite something.
10:03More of that in a minute.
10:05Let's see how he goes with his first ball.
10:06Oh, a good start as well.
10:08Slightly strangled LBW of field, but he defeated Bahadine there with his skid-on delivery.
10:20Bit of extra spin that time, but just a fraction short and a boundary off a thickish edge.
10:28Having not achieved as much as he or the county had hoped last year, he went to Australia in the winter
10:34and played club cricket in the Sydney first-grade competition for Gordon, where he didn't particularly well.
10:40Ended up Sydney Club Cricketer of the Year.
10:43Took a number of seven wicket balls, took a record number of wickets,
10:46and was coached every week by Stuart McGill, that fine former leg spinner for Australia.
10:58Oh, I think that was a chance, and it was grasped.
11:04Jason Roy at extra cover.
11:07De Villiers, the man who's benefited.
11:09Well, that's...
11:10I mean, that's a heartbreaker for Dawson, for England,
11:15and for Roy, who's had a tough old month.
11:18Difficult, very low, boot-laced job.
11:20The point is...
11:22Oh, that's another chance, isn't it?
11:24Quite carry, I don't think, did it?
11:26I'm not sure that quite carried to Liam Dawson.
11:31Opportunities created by...
11:33I was going to say England's spin twins, I could say Hampshire's too.
11:36Well, after a very sticky start,
11:44South Africa have found a little bit of rhythm in this partnership
11:47between De Villiers and Behardin.
11:49They've put on 30 together.
11:50We're halfway through the innings, it's 62 for three.
12:00Welcome back once more to the Aegeus Bowl.
12:02A hot evening, South Africa 62 for three,
12:04having won the toss and batting first.
12:05De Villiers and Behardin putting a partnership together,
12:08but they need to hit the accelerator pedal.
12:19Out of the hits, doesn't it?
12:21Fat completely lost control of the ball.
12:26Well, you could argue if England had brought the sharp fielding,
12:29this game could have been done for by now.
12:33A couple of half-chances gone down.
12:35That's a straightforward run-out chance missed.
12:45No, no, missing legs, Tom.
12:48Little top spinner hurries through from Mason Crane.
12:51The Hampshire spinners doing what they do very well for the county here
12:54on this big ground, bowling to a field set deep.
12:57Plenty of singles available, but no boundaries, and they're just squeezing South Africa now.
13:02Wicked, is it for Mason Crane?
13:14No, not quite.
13:15Roy couldn't make the ground.
13:17Well, you should have seen the youngster here.
13:21He's chasing after that ball.
13:23He couldn't get it.
13:23Jason Roy was the one that was chasing it as well.
13:26And it was A.B.
13:26De Villiers.
13:27If you're going to get a first international wicket,
13:29it might just as well be A.B.
13:30De Villiers.
13:40Another very good delivery,
13:42and now it's Mason Crane who comes to the final ball of his four-over spell.
13:46That seam position there, that's a legit lead break.
13:57He hasn't got away with a full toss, I'm afraid.
14:00It is too powerful.
14:01So, unfortunately, Crane finishes with the one bad,
14:05truly bad ball that he bowled in those four-overs,
14:08but it's still a most encouraging effort, Michael.
14:11Yeah, absolutely.
14:12Only bowled four-overs.
14:14Gone for 24,
14:15but I think we've all seen enough there
14:16that this young lad's going to have an England career.
14:31Now then...
14:33Oh, I wondered how he'd been on the road.
14:38Difficult to tell.
14:39It's in the far corner of the ground from where we are.
14:42Mason Crane pedalling backwards.
14:48Yeah, it's such a big boundary out there
14:50that you have to come in 10 yards,
14:51and then you're a bit unsure of where the boundary rope is.
14:55And it's gone straight through Mason Crane's hand.
14:58It's difficult running back.
15:01Yeah, it's a tough chance.
15:02Well, 4.50 was remaining for South Africa.
15:0893 for three.
15:11They've got to start finding the boundary.
15:14Where's that gone?
15:16Midwicket's on the boundary edge,
15:19so they're just struggling to find the rope, South Africa.
15:22England are bowling well.
15:23Changing the pace.
15:25Owen Morgan's doing a good job.
15:26Well, that's gone.
15:34And that's a good blow by Berhadian.
15:37It was required from South Africa.
15:39It's the first one we've seen fly into the stands.
15:42The David Miller 6 early was just over the ropes.
15:45Well, finally they've got one into the crowd.
15:47It's a sort of baseball hit almost.
15:52Wider the crease from Wood, short of a length,
15:55and just threw the bat at it,
15:56used all his body to try and get it as far as he possibly could,
16:00and he succeeded.
16:02And it's 100 up for South Africa.
16:10He's just not timing it, Avery de Villiers.
16:12Starting to get a little bit frustrated.
16:17It's not the shortage of practice either
16:19because he's been out in the middle here
16:21doing range hitting,
16:23trying to see how far he can hit the ball
16:25with bowlers and coaches feeding him them,
16:27but there we are, just top of the bat,
16:29lost his grip on it.
16:36No!
16:36Oh, no, that's straight in the...
16:38Yep.
16:40That's where it hurts.
16:42How's your fathers?
16:47Don't want to mention who the bowler was in this case.
16:52But, uh, it's painful.
16:55Well, I think it's just got him in the belly.
16:57Oh, he's gone again, he's gone again.
17:06Oh, he's just diving on that boundary, Mason Crane.
17:11This time he goes right on the fence.
17:13And he's, uh, charging in.
17:19He had to sort of recalibrate, actually.
17:21He came charging in and then had to slightly change direction.
17:24It seemed like there was almost a bit of topspin on that shot.
17:26And, yeah, in the end,
17:28he just couldn't quite cling on to it.
17:30Well, the village is on 47.
17:40Oh, there you go.
17:41There you go.
17:42That's what we've been waiting for.
17:45What a way to bring up a 50.
17:49The ramp comes squat.
17:51Well, it's a brilliant inning in the end.
17:55It started well,
17:56and just got a little bit stuck in the middle,
17:58but starting to find his timing with that shot.
18:01And it's not fair, really,
18:03when you've got a batsman with this sort of skill.
18:07Watch the footwork.
18:08Right outside off stump.
18:10Gives the bowler the entire view of the stumps.
18:12That's almost a wide on the offside.
18:15And flicks nonchalantly over long lead for six.
18:21That's really good from Chris Jordan.
18:27He's watching A.B. DeVillage.
18:28He sees him goes leg-sized.
18:30He just fires it wide of off stump
18:31just inside that indicating white line.
18:34England were practising this earlier, actually,
18:36with a boot positioned in exactly that spot
18:38on the crease, wide of off stump.
18:41And they hit it a few times.
18:44Well, it's a beautiful evening at the Adiers Bowl.
18:47Over 30 degrees.
18:49Great crowding.
18:52Chris Jordan's bowling a terrific over here.
18:54Just a three from it.
18:56One ball remaining.
18:57This partnership's now 83 from 82 deliveries.
19:01England have controlled it nicely.
19:06Again, the field has been decent.
19:09A couple of early chances went down
19:11and the run-out miss.
19:13But apart from that, England have been pretty good in the field.
19:15They've been diving around.
19:18116 for three.
19:19Two overs remaining.
19:20Mark Wood back into the attack.
19:25Oh, it's nicely played.
19:28It's going to be a boundary.
19:30No, it's not.
19:30Brilliant.
19:31Sam Billings is such a fantastic mover.
19:39He gets very low to the ground.
19:41Because he's a wicketkeeper, he's got very strong legs.
19:44And his ability to intercept these balls and get to them so fast as well.
19:50And then get down quickly.
19:52Saved a run.
19:53Brilliant.
19:54That is a baseball shot.
20:06That's crunch to the boundary.
20:08And that's going to be Berhadian's 50.
20:1147 balls, 4-4s, 1-6.
20:20Well, it's important that these next 10 balls for South Africa disappear.
20:24They've got to get this score up to around 150 if they can.
20:28Ah, it's a lovely punch.
20:29That is a magnificent stroke.
20:32The Czech strike down the ground for six.
20:36Yeah, what's really good about that shot is he didn't try and hit it too hard.
20:39Some of the other shots he's played, he's tried to hit the cover off the ball.
20:43But that one is just a little punch, as Michael Bourne said, as a Czech drive.
20:49Would not quite getting his length right.
20:51Probably looking to bowl the Yorker there.
20:52He just fell a bit short.
20:54And the ball went the distance.
20:57Well, England have done a really good job on AB de Villiers.
21:01In after that first ball.
21:02So he's batted pretty much the 20 overs.
21:04He's 56 off 54 balls.
21:07Strike rate of 103.
21:094-4s, 1-6.
21:11He'll want to finish here with a flourish.
21:13Got to reach the boundary.
21:14Oh, there you go.
21:16Take that, Chris Jordan.
21:18Beautiful.
21:19The second time we've seen him sweep the ball into the stands.
21:24And Jordan can only smile and admire the shot, really.
21:27You just have to hand it to de Villiers for this incredible ability, hand-eye coordination, audacity, total incredible skill to just deposit that ball about 90 yards.
21:40Well, it's the last ball of the innings.
21:46141 for three.
21:48England will be delighted with this.
21:52It's been difficult for South Africa.
21:53England have bowled nicely.
21:55It just feels 20 or 30 light.
21:58Now, can South Africa finish with a boundary?
22:04No, they've done a lot of that tonight.
22:06A lot of good shots to the fielders on the boundary.
22:09Good finish for England.
22:14142 for three.
22:18I think it's difficult to say whether that's a good total or not.
22:21Certainly, de Villiers and Beardin made the most of the last couple of overs.
22:25There's a partnership in the end of 110 to carry the South Africans to 142 for three.
22:3065 and 64, respectively, from that pair.
22:35It was the England spinners who were the best of the bowlers, though David Willey picked up that important early wicket.
22:40And Mark Wood, with his pace, picked up a couple.
22:43The target then, 143 to win the game.
22:46That's a rate of 7.1 and over.
22:49And I think you'd make England marginal favourites.
22:55Here's your chance to win a day to remember at the 4th England vs. South Africa Investec Test Match in Manchester.
23:08The competition winner will be handed a pair of three Lions hospitality tickets to the Saturday of the Emirates Old Trafford Test in August.
23:15You'll have reserved seats in the Point Hospitality Suite, where you'll enjoy breakfast, a three-course lunch and afternoon tea.
23:22Also included is a two-night stay at the brand-new Hilton Garden Inn, Emirates Old Trafford Manchester Hotel, located on-site at the ground.
23:29And you'll get return train travel.
23:32It all adds up to a brilliant weekend away.
23:34It should live long in the memory.
23:35So, to enter, text CRICKET to 65515, or post your name and phone number to CRICKET1, PO Box 7557, Derby, DE10ND.
23:47Tickets are valid on Saturday 5th of August only.
23:49The winner must be contactable by 5pm on the 21st of July.
23:53Text costs £1.50 plus one message at standard network rate.
23:58Lines close at midday on the date shown on screen and three working days later for postal entries.
24:02For rules, go to channel5.com slash win.
24:05Good luck.
24:09Some quite serious-looking words from the South Africans.
24:13Two or three of them have spoken.
24:14England need 143 to win this game.
24:17The rate's 7.1 and over.
24:19And it's Alex Hales and Jason Roy walking to the wicket.
24:26Right, how about this?
24:27JJ Smuts, slow left arm to start the innings.
24:29He had no luck starting the innings when he batted.
24:32He's had a lot more luck starting it when he bowls.
24:35Half an appeal for LBW, withdrawn.
24:48That's a good hit.
24:49Got onto the length of the ball quickly.
24:53Alex Hales is a tall man, but he stood particularly tall there.
24:57Well, Parnell Volthales is a bounce at first ball, so the second one didn't surprise him.
25:02The first one he let go, he was given a wide.
25:04And I think he was waiting for this one.
25:07Right back, look right back on the stumps.
25:10Baseball style, good strike from Hales.
25:12Well, that finds the gap at point.
25:26Timing every bit as important as power.
25:29No problem.
25:42Brilliant, really.
25:46Nice quick hands, plenty of power and confidence is the best thing from Jason Roy.
25:51And a good catch to go with him.
25:52Yeah, that's actually the pace that John John Smuts bowled.
25:55And left arm, well, he's not really spinning it.
25:57He's left arm round, kind of firing it in.
26:00There you go, it's like an arm ball.
26:0260 miles an hour and Roy's just used the pace.
26:05Beautiful shot.
26:06Four runs straight down, leg side.
26:19This format of the game.
26:21No matter whether it's bat or thigh pad or whatever.
26:26Well, Parnell keeps opting to hit the wicket.
26:29Ball's short.
26:31Just don't think he's got the pace.
26:3387 miles an hour on the radar, but...
26:35Against these quality players, it's just not quite quick enough to ball that length.
26:40That's right, he's predictable.
26:41He huffs and he puffs and the guys expect it.
26:44Get it up there and then he'd get him on the crease or even on the back foot.
26:49Oh, just leathered it.
26:53Brilliant ball striking from Jason Roy.
26:56Well, I know Jason got a few runs for Surrey against Worcester,
26:59but I think that's probably the best feeling Jason Roy's had on a cricket field for a while.
27:04Well, he did pitch it up.
27:06There was no swing and what a golf swing that is.
27:16And that's very clear.
27:22Roy got himself in the right position and then decided the ball had bounced too high to really go out hard.
27:33So he just looked to help it.
27:34He got lucky with the top edge.
27:35I think Roy's looking at the pitch to say it's come off a bit quicker than he thought.
27:40He's got an edge on it.
27:41He's gone for four.
27:43Parnell's over.
27:44He's gone for 14 already.
27:45He's on with three balls gone.
27:4736 for noughts after 3.3.
27:51It's that short ball again.
27:56And that's four more.
27:59Brilliant from Jason Roy.
28:01This is the best of him.
28:02This is the one that Owen Morgan has been supporting
28:04over this last difficult, I don't know, months, six weeks or so.
28:09Well, this is the Jason Roy that we didn't see in the Champions Trophy.
28:15Cross Seema from Parnell.
28:17He's trying everything short.
28:19Trying to cut her.
28:21It doesn't matter what.
28:22He's bowling at the minute.
28:23He's going to the boundary.
28:36That might be four more.
28:37Yep, it will be.
28:39Sparkling stuff from Jason Roy.
28:49Well, and I think this is the best of them.
28:51Four to six was a tremendous strike,
28:53but this is a wonderful batsmanship.
28:56Known exactly where the gap is.
28:58Playing it late, just opening the blade.
29:06Now, Ndile Pellecollo into the attack.
29:08We saw him in the one day to Nationals.
29:10And that is our LBW first ball, Pellecolli.
29:16And you just have to say to yourself, why does Jason Roy do that?
29:20Oh, when you can hit a ball over long off for six, pretty much at will.
29:26Don't they agree, Mark?
29:27Why play this stroke?
29:29Just played wonderfully for 28 off 14 deliveries.
29:31It's right in the slot as well.
29:35He's looking to see where it's hit him outside, but I think it's a decent decision from the umpire.
29:43Jason Roy goes.
29:44It's 45 for one.
29:50Johnny Verstowe is off the mark.
30:04Pellecollo just drifting a little wide, and Verstowe's eager to take his chance.
30:09Well, anyone that had the privilege to watch his dad play, David, this was his shot.
30:15Absolutely right.
30:16Like many a wicketkeeper, he is a fine square cutter of the ball.
30:22Now, no surprise, Avery de Villiers has had to turn to Imran Tahir for the last over of the power play.
30:3451 for one, England.
30:38And he's got away with that one.
30:39That is a loosener.
30:41To South Africa to have any hope, Tahir's got to pick up wickets.
30:46Go boys!
30:52Oh, crunch.
30:55Tremendous strike.
30:58Another six for England.
31:02Such an amazing reach that Alex Hales has.
31:06That he used to good advantage here.
31:09Gets his front foot right down and really hits right through the ball.
31:14To get it maximum distance.
31:20Ah, this is going to be interesting.
31:22Tabrias, Shamsi into the attack.
31:25Left-arm Chinaman.
31:27Don't see many of these.
31:31Now, look at Verstowe straight away.
31:32Went two.
31:33Really good running from England.
31:35Terrific start.
31:3761 for one after 6.1.
31:41Required rates only at 5.93.
31:43England should stroll this game.
31:45Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:46Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:47Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:47Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:47Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:47Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:48Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:49Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:50Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:51Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:51Go ahead, Shamsidey.
31:52Oh, has that gone out the ground?
31:54Yes, it has.
31:57Well, not quite out the ground, but over the ropes.
31:59Six more.
32:02It doesn't matter about how far over the ropes it goes.
32:05Six.
32:06As long as it clears them.
32:08It's just a short-arm jab, really, from Johnny Verstowe.
32:11So much back speed there.
32:12The length not quite full enough to deny the elevation.
32:24It's beautifully timed again from Johnny Verstowe.
32:26Too many England fans just watching this thinking, you know, why don't you play like this against Pakistan in the semi-final at Cardiff.
32:34Oh, that's another good strike from Johnny Verstowe.
32:44Wonderful cricket stroke.
32:47It's a extraordinary rich vein of hitting from Johnny Verstowe.
33:00In all formats.
33:01Just bowlers just come and go to him.
33:04It doesn't matter who bowls or what they bowl.
33:06They get the treatment.
33:07Oh, yeah, that's it.
33:15The running man.
33:16Bit of madness in the crowd.
33:19Go on, Stuart.
33:20That's it.
33:22That's it.
33:23Point the fingers to the sky.
33:25Oh, they're joining in behind.
33:26Oh, look at him with the blue beard on.
33:29It's a carnival.
33:33This is dangerous with the pinties.
33:35Andy might go.
33:37Oh, that's going to be four more.
33:50Blue fielders at short third man.
33:53This is a quick evening for England.
33:56They're playing like they want to get this finished very quickly indeed.
34:00Well, it puts it in perspective.
34:02South Africa's score, which just didn't feel like it was enough.
34:06And England have got three quarters of the way there already.
34:08And this is still the tenth over.
34:12It's all too easy for England.
34:13Hello once more from the Aegeus Bowl.
34:25A beautiful cricket ground and a very popular one with the players.
34:28A ground that photographs well.
34:29And, of course, on a fine evening such as this one, it looks a pretty picture.
34:34As does England's scorecard.
34:3597 for one from 10 overs with Alex Hales and Johnny Bairstow going very nicely.
34:40The reverse sweep.
34:50Everything's working for Bairstow.
34:53Timing beautifully.
34:54And nothing's working for South Africa.
34:56Both of those comments are spot on.
35:04I think it is worth making the point about Bairstow.
35:08He just is a terrific player.
35:10It's extraordinary that he can't get a regular place to the 1-80.
35:16102 for one.
35:17England now in the 11th over.
35:19South Africa was 64 for three at this point.
35:20Yeah, Bairstow's coming back for Tooth.
35:32The Billy Whiz of the England team.
35:44Shot.
35:45He seemed to almost know that was coming even before it did.
35:48And just flapped it away.
35:49Short, fine leg.
35:50Could do nothing about it there.
35:52So 39 from 22 balls.
35:56South Africa, a ball too short.
35:58Really is as simple as that.
36:01He said that England have picked them off when they've overpitched.
36:06But this pitch with this good bounce and pace, you can help it on its way.
36:20Sharp stop from Wayne Parnell at back to point.
36:26But can't really see that's going to have much impact on the overall result.
36:31Nothing much has worked for South Africa.
36:34But at least they saved a run here.
36:36It was one of the best one day ranked bowlers in the world in Renta here.
36:50But look at that.
36:51Look at that.
36:51Bairstow slapping him through extra cover.
36:54And another boundary tip round the post by the deep cover fielder.
36:59Lesson in putting away the bad ball by hitting down and through the stroke.
37:05Coming out of it and trying to hit it too hard.
37:07This is a crunch.
37:08Johnny Bairstow slapping him through the pitch by Jonny Bairstow.
37:22Even the resolute forward defensive brings England a single.
37:35Big blow by Hales but not the distance.
37:38It's gone into orbit.
37:40And another drop by South Africa.
37:42Or another floor anyway.
37:44That really is embarrassing.
37:46Never easy but should have been taken by Bahadine.
37:50Embarrassing is the word because of the mess he got into.
37:53At this level of cricket.
37:55Fine.
37:55Drop a catch.
37:58The third could just make a shambles of it.
38:02Yes it went very high.
38:03And what he had to do was steady himself.
38:07Oh gosh.
38:08I'm sure that replay too often.
38:12At least not too faran Bahadine.
38:16That's what he meant the last time.
38:18That's a proper blow from Hales.
38:20Just to send Imran Tahir on his way with his tail between his legs.
38:25Well that's the thing about the guys today.
38:34You know you get dropped one ball and you try to hit the next one.
38:36The 6-2.
38:38When you bat without the fear of failure.
38:40Particularly as the players do in 2020 cricket.
38:44It's a lovely feeling and it opens up a whole new world.
38:47Left arm chiming and bowlers back on.
38:52And Berst O'Hare is back for the second run.
39:02Just actually had a bit of treatment for probably dehydration.
39:05But it didn't stop him.
39:13Oh.
39:14Truth and thought for AB Davidias.
39:16Because this is a slaughter in a short form game.
39:20Win with so much time to spare.
39:21Which is what England are going to do.
39:22In fact so much is a slaughter they can afford to block the odd delivery.
39:31He's not looking quite right there Stoneau.
39:33He's really puffing and panting.
39:35And if he is then conditions must be pretty tough.
39:40Heat wise anyway.
39:52Through the extra cover field.
39:57A four more.
39:58That was hit with blistering tower.
40:04Yeah a good 50.
40:05What a way to get to him too.
40:06Very late using his wrists.
40:09Getting that blade open.
40:13He's only faced 29 balls.
40:1552.
40:17He might be receiving that man of the match award in just a moment's time.
40:20I think what he really needs is a long drink and a sit down.
40:25So do the South African bowlers.
40:29Look up to the sky.
40:31Knowing that dad's watching.
40:39Could be at least two.
40:50Oh clever.
41:05That's just ingenious shot.
41:08You'd have thought he might have tried to bludgeon that back over mid on.
41:11But shown a bit of deathless there as well as his power.
41:14Well do you know.
41:16I have a hunch he was thinking of pulling this.
41:18But I'm not wrong.
41:20He was always ramping it.
41:25Ramping it really well.
41:26The Villiers hasn't even brought the fielder's in given that there's only one run required for victory.
41:41One to win.
41:42And it comes from a little push on the offside.
41:46Easily strolled by Johnny Bairstow who's gone to 60 from just 35 balls.
41:51Because it's been so easy for England and South Africa who only three weeks ago of course lost this one day international here.
41:59Having required seven off the final over.
42:01He'll be just glad to get out of Southampton.
42:03Yes it's a very impressive performance by England against a lacklustre South African performance I'd say.
42:12I thought South Africa were off colour in the Champions Trophy.
42:15And it's hard to put one's finger on it.
42:17It's not so much that they're getting beaten by England but just that they're not playing with the verb you expect from South African sides.
42:24Bairstow far too good today.
42:25He finished with 60.
42:30Alex Hales unbeaten with 47 from 38 balls.
42:33A terrific partnership.
42:3498 in 63 balls.
42:37Both of them striking at well above 100.
42:40In fact Bairstow up at 171.
42:42So 143 for one.
42:44It means that England take a 1-0 lead in the series.
42:47There are the South African bowlers.
42:49And no joy for any of them except Pellecoeo who got Jason Roy with that unlikely reverse sweep attempt.
42:58The victory margin.
42:59Nine wickets.
42:59England go to Taunton feeling pretty good about themselves.
43:02Johnny Bester's the man of the match and with me now.
43:04You look like you enjoyed that.
43:06Yeah it was good fun obviously.
43:07It's been a while since I've played with it at 2020.
43:09So it's great to be out in the middle and great to be on the winning side.
43:12Obviously after being slightly disappointed last week.
43:13Just in general it must be very difficult for you following the one day side around and not getting a regular place.
43:20Yeah it's obviously frustrating but when the side are playing well and producing results then it's difficult to get in any side isn't it?
43:27But yeah hopefully when I get the opportunity and I do come in I'd like to hope that I take the chances that I'm getting.
43:34You've got a clear run at it now don't you with another couple of 20 games and then the test series to come.
43:38Yeah well obviously I'm playing the next one and then we've got the day night fixture against Surrey up at Yorkshire.
43:44So then we've got test preparation ahead so we've only got one more 2020 and then back up for that.
43:49So that's going to be an interesting one ahead and it might do the same as it does on 9.30 on a morning.
43:56Just thinking ahead to South Africa because of course there's such a gifted side.
44:00Yeah absolutely.
44:00I mean it was spoken about at the toss about them bringing people in to give them some exposure and to play.
44:07And you could see well we've played against a lot of them whether that be England Lions against South Africa Ray all the way through.
44:14And I think these guys played against the majority of the lads in Cape, well Parle actually last time we were in South Africa.
44:21So yeah they're a very talented side.
44:23I must ask you about the two Hampshire spinners if I may.
44:26Yeah look it's fantastic.
44:28I mean through that middle period to bowl eight overs and go for less than 50 runs is a serious effort.
44:34But when you've got two guys in and playing well but we just don't get too far ahead of ourselves with everything.
44:42Because we know yes we've got a lot of talent within the group but we've still got a lot of hard work to do in order to get to the places that we want to as a group.
44:50All right lovely to watch you back today.
44:51I hope the summer goes really well for you.
44:53Enjoy the champagne.
44:54There's a big bottle of champagne down here.
44:56England victorious today.
44:58It's Taunton next.
44:59That's on Friday.
45:00Join us if you can.
45:01And until then to all of us.
45:02Bye bye.
