Israel's military presence in Syria has expanded beyond the agreed-upon buffer zone, with reports of at least 10 bases and outposts established on Syrian territory.
This development has sparked anger among Syrians, who view it as a violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement.
Israeli forces have conducted raids on Syrian homes, made arrests, and now control a significant portion of shared water sources, including key dams in the region.
These actions have heightened tensions between the two countries.
The Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, faces a complex diplomatic challenge.
While seeking to maintain national unity and secure international support for economic recovery, Syria must also navigate its relationship with Israel.
The prospect of improved ties, potentially akin to the Abraham Accords, is met with internal resistance and regional considerations involving Russia, Turkiye, and other Middle Eastern nations.
This delicate balancing act is further complicated by Syria's historical support for the Palestinian cause and widespread anti-Zionist sentiment among its population.

00:00These are Israeli tanks on Syrian territory.
00:03Since the fall of the Assad regime, Israeli forces have moved beyond a demilitarized buffer
00:08zone and set at least 10 bases and outposts in Syria.
00:12Syrians are angry at Israel's violations of the 1974 disengagement agreement with their
00:16country.
00:18This video was posted by Israeli forces after they raided Syrian homes and arrested people
00:22including a child without proof of what they called an Iranian cell.
00:27This is in addition to Israel's military occupation of the Golan Heights in Syria and attacks on
00:32Syrian military facilities, including its navy, air defenses, jets and heavy weaponry.
00:38But military incursions and occupation are not the only sources of tensions between Syria
00:43and Israel.
00:44Water security is also a major issue.
00:48Syrian media reports say the Israeli military now controls 40% of water sources shared by
00:52Syria and Jordan.
00:54After taking over the Al-Wahda Dam in the Yirmouk Basin in December, Israeli forces then
00:58advance to the Al-Mantra Dam.
01:01But Syria is in a difficult position to respond.
01:04President Ahmed al-Shara's administration has to keep together a fragile unity government
01:08and not upset its western supporters who it needs to build its economy and gain international
01:13recognition as a safe partner.
01:16The Trump administration has lifted crippling sanctions on the country and many believe the
01:19Syrian government has to do its part by improving tithes with Israel as a quid pro quo.
01:24The Abraham Accords were announced at a big, glamorous agreement during the Trump 1 presidency.
01:32Not much of it has fulfilled its promises.
01:35So we could witness a signing ceremony in Washington, but that really doesn't mean much on the ground.
01:42It will take institutions, it will take a lot of time to settle the real issues on the
01:48ground, which is occupied territories.
01:50But even if there is an understanding on the buffer zone and Israel respects Syrian sovereignty,
01:56the Shara administration is likely to have great difficulty selling it to many hardline
02:00factions and a population that largely opposes Zionism.
02:05Palestinians are part of Syrian society and their struggles and suffering in Gaza resonate
02:09with Syrians.
02:11And then there are other regional and international considerations.
02:15Russian troops are based on Syrian territory.
02:17And while any deal may not affect that situation, it's more likely to have an impact on Syria's
02:22relationship with Turkey.
02:24Israel and Turkey are both vying for direct or indirect influence over Damascus.
02:29Beyond this point is Syrian territory under the control of the Israeli government.
02:34And any diplomatic overtures will have to be met with balancing not just strong internal
02:40resistance but also regional considerations including that of Turkey, Jordan and even Saudi Arabia.
02:48And to balance all of that, the Ahmad al-Shara administration has its work cut out for it.
02:52As I mentioned earlier, I will see you in the next video.
