00:00They came to make their voices heard.
00:02The centre of Brisbane was brought to a standstill,
00:05with road closures as tens of thousands of people
00:07called for an end to Israel's war on Gaza.
00:10I think it's atrocious that the Palestinians
00:13are being treated worse than we're treating animals.
00:15Every time I picture those families and children
00:18and see them starving and crying out for food,
00:21I just picture how that would feel as a mother.
00:24I have a child seeing children her own age being killed.
00:30Even if I didn't have a child, I think, yeah,
00:33the fact that we can see all these things firsthand being televised
00:37and still allowing it to happen, it's, yeah, pretty disgusting.
00:40It wasn't just in Brisbane.
00:42Thousands of people joined rallies in state capitals across Australia
00:46in a coordinated National Day of Action.
00:49Their message, the government must do more,
00:52targeted sanctions on Israel
00:53and an end to Australia's arms trade with Israel.
00:57We demand from our politicians more than just talk,
01:00We are long past this now.
01:01We demand actions in the same way we acted in times of genocide.
01:06We are signatories to the Genocide Convention,
01:08which means that we have an obligation to prevent
01:10and punish genocide when it occurs.
01:12Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed
01:14Australia will recognise Palestinian statehood
01:17at the UN General Assembly next month.
01:20The federal government has also pledged
01:21$85 million in humanitarian aid,
01:24but protesters say words and pledges are not enough.
01:27There are more rallies planned in coming weeks,
01:30not just here in Brisbane, but around the country,
01:33as people in Australia are calling for tougher action
01:35from the federal government.
01:37These demonstrations are more than a show of solidarity.
01:40They are demands for accountability.
