00:00Why is 80% of Iceland empty?

00:03This Nordic island nation is bigger than South Korea

00:06but has only 390,000 people.

00:09And here are the reasons why.

00:11First, Iceland does have some green areas,

00:14especially along the coast and in summer,

00:16but the interior is mostly a volcanic highland desert

00:19where nothing can grow.

00:20About 11% is covered by glaciers,

00:23much of the rest is lava fields,

00:25and only 1% is actually arable farmland.

00:28Second, the weather is brutal.

00:30Imagine winter darkness for 19 hours daily

00:33and summer winds that can knock you over.

00:35Most people simply can't handle it.

00:37Third, jobs are scarce outside fishing and tourism.

00:40Young Icelanders often leave for better opportunities abroad.

00:44And you get a country where all these people

00:46are crammed into coastal towns on just 20% of the land.
