00:00Can you imagine there is a city inside a single building?
00:03Welcome to the city of Whittier, Alaska, a unique place where almost all the residents live inside
00:09this one building. Getting there is not easy. You can only reach Whittier through a two and a half
00:14miles long tunnel, which is one of the longest tunnels in North America. The population of the
00:19city is about 270 people and almost all of them live in a building called Begich Tower. Practically
00:25all the infrastructure of the city is concentrated in this building. Just imagine,
00:29there are not only apartments but also a police station, post office, store, municipal office,
00:35hotel, school, and even two churches. The town was founded during World War II as a military base
00:41and in 1956, Begich Tower was built as a barracks. Since the town was inaccessible, the military built
00:48a supply tunnel. In the 1960s, they left the place and Whittier became independent. The town mainly
00:54lives off tourism, fishing, and transportation infrastructure, which provide employment and
00:59income for the residents.
