Transcript
00:00Ever wondered what country phone codes actually mean?
00:03And why are there only two single-digit codes in the world,
00:06while all the others have two or even three digits?
00:09Look, only four countries have a golden code,
00:12plus one for the USA and Canada,
00:14and plus seven for Russia and Kazakhstan.
00:16However, Kazakhstan uses plus seven temporarily.
00:20So, where's plus two, plus three, and all the rest?
00:23The thing is, in the 60s, the world was divided into phone regions,
00:27and each region was assigned its own starting number.
00:30Plus one went to North America, plus two to Africa,
00:33plus three and plus four to Europe,
00:35plus five to Central and South America,
00:37plus six to Southeast Asia and Australia,
00:39plus seven to the USSR,
00:41plus eight to East Asia,
00:43and plus nine to the Middle East.
00:45So, single-digit codes were given to the top priority countries
00:48for quick communication,
00:49while others were first assigned a regional code,
00:51and then a unique number for each country.
00:53And you know what doesn't exist?
00:55A plus zero code.
00:57Maybe they're saving it for Antarctica,
00:58or even the moon.
