00:46um we always try to bring in somebody who can really give us that golden nuggets and this sunday
00:54we have somebody when you use alcohol ano ba natatandaan ninyo ano bang brand ang ginagamit
01:04ninyo during the pandemic i'm sure we were all scampering for alcohol you know the 70 percent
01:14isopropyl okay but we always trust a brand isn't it diba so this morning oh my gosh this is somebody
01:23who is a grandson who lives and tries to promote the legacy of his grandfather and you know what
01:35there is the book called the green cross saga of denny uh gonzalo for it so let's introduce dennis
01:48ko okay dennis good noon to you good sunday to you kamusta ba now first of all um mr butch
01:57uh bartolome okay um good afternoon okay happy sunday okay um yes yes um tell us dennis you are proudly
02:09promoting promoting the saga or the green cross uh the green cross uh saga of your lolo gonzalo
02:17ko it tell us who is gonzalo uh ko it okay um mr gonzalo ko it was uh was my grandfather okay um he came from
02:30uh china okay at uh uh 11 years old okay and then um um there uh uh he he he he he work um yeah he
02:42he he he uh uh can you he's talking he worked in um 11 years old yeah but he came to the philippines
02:5111 right yeah uh with this mother uh you know why because um you know i've been reading this book
02:59yeah and this book really i tell you uh one book that i never stopped to learn to read reread and reread
03:07and really at the age of 11 with this grandmother bakit sila napunta dito from china okay uh he came here
03:14from um uh from from from china no at uh 11 years old because um uh first is um um gun gun mother passed
03:24away already okay uh when he was 10 years old so uh he came uh he his father asked him to come
03:31to uh to to to the philippines no okay para may uh may kasama uh sila dito magkakasama na dito no okay so
03:40uh at uh um around 11 years old so pumunta siya dito sa sa philippines na with his uh mother
03:48okay but and then uh yeah it started there oh but uh at 11 years old he was very very young
03:56now imagine um um even the language siguro he never you know he had to learn the hard way you know
04:04because i'm sure he was not uh a tagalog or english so he had to learn the hard way the language he has
04:13to uh assimilate no um um uh for some um uh he has to learn tagalog and english especially
04:22language to the oh yeah so but uh but as grand as the eldest grandson uh dennis i'm sure you learned a lot
04:32uh you were so very fortunate uh to pick up uh and see how your lolo gonzalo lived and uh you know
04:42pass on his values ano ba yung mga natatandaan mo sa kanya okay yeah yes of course no um uh he has a lot
04:51of values that imparted to me one of which the um you have to be humble to be humble especially even though
05:00if you're successful already you have to be stay grounded you have to be uh yeah humble and then
05:07second i have to help the uh the the poor people or the needy i i remember i remember uh reading in a
05:15book that um uh he was he worked as a bodeguero as a waiter yes uh ano pa ano ano yung mga sinimulan
05:24niya na talagang waiter first the waiter no as a working student naging waiter po siya pangalawa
05:30after that uh in star cafe in in in binondo oh so um naging naging budeguero
05:38a cucinero in budeguero sa manila commercial company and after that he became a treasurer of
05:45that said uh company and then became a salesman fantastic but uh you mentioned working students
05:52um before uh nag-aaral uh denis uh before uh nag-aaral po siya sa lasal lasal no
05:59lasal university you're the one the one the one in ta before before university and before lasal
06:04college oh lasal college so one in uh the one in tough avenue right yes yes tama no
06:09shout out to the animal lasal yan okay so that's the reason is that the reason why green yes
06:17green cross yes because he named after the uh uh his school no which uh um naging ano
06:24siya um na all the traits his traits no and they become a uh naging prayerful naging uh religious
06:32no it's because of the lasal brothers oh yeah so yung the the influence of the lasal brothers really
06:38played uh so much on him no so um um naging ganyan siya no so imagine mo he was a working
06:46student at the same from binondo and then traveling all the way to taft yeah it's not that easy at that
06:53time right i mean medyo malayo-layo pa rin yun yes okay after that he studied in uh ft
06:58feu feu also but two years only uh in college na niya he studied the commerce e commerce and then
07:07after that nga naging working student na siya so tell me how did he start this business of alcohol
07:13okay marami naman siya negosyon pwedeng simulan di ba yes why alcohol yeah because of his experience in
07:21manila commercial uh company which uh nagwebenta ng uh selling uh robbing alcohol that time from
07:29america they're importing no ah okay company the the philippine uh company the manila commercial
07:37company they're importing alcohol robbing alcohol personal care in in general personal personal
07:42cares one of which is the robbing alcohol great in the name gray cross gray cross gray gray cross gray
07:49gray gray cross okay color gray gray cross robbing alcohol that's because of that
07:56na na bagay siya pagkakataon opportunity to uh sa sales nga na nagbenta ng mga alcohol so he he got
08:04the all the experience there the the in and outs of the selling but i cannot imagine he started how much uh
08:13three thousand four hundred pesos yes as a startup investment yes and uh this was probably what 1950s
08:22right tama ba 1952 1952 and even then uh it was from his savings yes yes from his savings especially
08:33become he became uh english teacher at night
08:35eh sa gabi po nagtaturo siya ng uh english sa mga uh yung mga uh yung mga uh from china
08:41yung mga student from china china no yung mga pumunta rin dito yung tuloy niya na mag english
08:47so siya yung uh parabang transition yeah uh because uh alam niya yung buhay
08:53ng somebody who migrated yes exactly oh yes during time kasi marami nag nag migrate from china to the philippines
09:01and uh so parabang uh he was trying to help his uh fellow countrymen to adjust yes especially uh
09:11uh you know learning the language no yes so yun yun importante don but again i was so impressed
09:17because uh he said that uh uh uh yung uh three thousand four hundred he had to uh and then rent an
09:25apartment for 90 pesos a month diba yes tama po yun tama po yun no nasa uh sa top avenue
09:32sa pasay city hmm exactly nasa 2500 top avenue uh pasay city uh so uh isa sa mga nakita ko you
09:44know the alcohol uh siguro nakita niyo yung advantage right uh this will be of help to a lot of uh a lot of
09:52people yes you know sanitation rather than just personal care no hygiene
09:58oh pero na na na na ano ako na naintriga ako kasi dennis he he said that he was peddling
10:06he was peddling and offering it to different uh stores sari sari stores his alcohol
10:14drugstores drugstores drugstores drugstores in kiapo and uh and manila oh tapos nagkaroon pa siya
10:23ng uh ito yung uh first delivery truck no um yung delivery truck nyan um although he does not he
10:32did not know how to drive but he was he was really drive he was uh he got somebody to help him no
10:40no so yun yung ano don but ano ba yung lifestyle ni ni uh ni uh ni Gonzalo that you saw ah it's
10:48very uh simple it's very simple you know lifestyle niya very simple practical no uh um yun yun yung mga
10:57nakikita ko sa kanya very simple lang very uh humble no um yun yung mga nakikita ko po
11:05oh kasi sabi dito rin um he even introduced sonrocks yes oh yeah oh my gosh sonrocks
11:12oh yung mga ay mga kaibigan ha nakita nyo dalawang brand green cross alcohol and sonrocks
11:20bakit nga pala sonrocks ang ganda ng pangalan eh okay after the green cross he launched green cross
11:25no in uh that was in 1952 he launched naman uh sonrocks no so but before he launched the sonrocks
11:32he he did the marketing market research no it's na may uh he went to a uh a school or a place
11:40eh no he make a research no for that alcohol how to make uh i mean sorry make uh the bleach no
11:46po no and afterwards yun nag launch nang nang nang bleach at first gusto niya ipangalan po
11:51ng gonrocks after uh the name of gonzalo gonrocks but there's uh uh there was a uh uh a chinese
12:00trader also na nag complain pumunta sa office na nag complain na huwag gamitin yan na ng brand name
12:06kasi yung competitor niya pangalan old rocks old rocks sound similar so without making fast naman may
12:15lolo um change it to ano um zone rocks because of the gonzalo the zay no the gonzalo the zay the
12:24elson kasa giraan na nang nazongっち mia lan mong zon rocks na ito giraan na zone rocks
12:29jiraan nang nang jam samp gracias yung zon rocks dahil meron nag re-reklamang gone rocks
12:31yes yes
12:32anang nangyari ito lo itong zon rocks naging by word na diba
12:37o pipa sinabi mong pag sina alam mo ito ya yung nak on na i guess guys you have to
12:42get this book uh this a book that any any university any college or schools for that matter
12:50high school should really
12:52have, no, by, because
12:54ang daming learnings, no?
12:55Sabi nga niya, real life business school.
12:58Yes. But, just imagine
13:00the two brands, Green Cross
13:02Alcohol and Zonrox.
13:04And when people buy alcohol,
13:06they don't buy alcohol.
13:09Di ba?
13:09Ako nga, pag sinabi kong,
13:12bili ka ng alcohol, hindi eh.
13:14Anong brand? Di ba? Branding.
13:16Pag sinabi mong Clorox,
13:18ano ba yung Clorox? Hindi eh.
13:20Zonrox. Di ba?
13:22Tama po.
13:23Fantastic ang branding ng Lolo Gonzalo mo.
13:26Ako talagang saludo ako sa'yo.
13:28But, he was saying that he
13:29lived a frugal life.
13:31Yes, tama po yan.
13:33Especially when he was starting the business,
13:36frugal life, even to say, hindi siya magastos eh.
13:40Because, he has
13:41to think of the
13:43children. He has
13:45around eight children.
13:48So,
13:48he has also to take
13:50good care of his
13:52siblings.
13:54So, he
13:54definitely, he has to be frugal.
13:56And also, at that time, kasi may business siya.
13:58Business siya,
13:59may nasi kaso.
14:01So,
14:01starting pa lang that time,
14:03hindi pa talagang
14:04very
14:05stable.
14:06So, yan, frugal.
14:08He has to be frugal.
14:09And, alam mo, grabe,
14:12no?
14:12Ang galing, no?
14:13Simplicity,
14:14living a life that's very,
14:16very, just, you know,
14:18tamang-tama lang.
14:19Hindi naman yung sobra-sobra na masyadong
14:22ostentatious,
14:25di ba?
14:25Masyadong pa,
14:27you know, maraming mga
14:28arti pa.
14:28But,
14:29sa kanya,
14:29simple lang, no?
14:30And, even,
14:31sinasabi niya dito,
14:33your word is your bond.
14:35Yes.
14:35Kumbaga.
14:36Kumbaga po yun.
14:37Parang sa ano,
14:38sa negosyante before,
14:39especially for the Chinese businessman,
14:41Filipino-Chinese, no?
14:42When you say something,
14:43talagang,
14:44or shake hand lang,
14:45you mean to say,
14:46parang,
14:46good to go,
14:48na-contact na yan, eh.
14:50In other words,
14:51yun ang sinasabi niya.
14:52There's really no PO
14:53or purchase order.
14:55Di ba?
14:55Yung bang,
14:56tama, no?
14:57Ang galing, no?
14:58Hindi ko kailangan ng PO mo,
14:59but your word is your bond already.
15:01In other words,
15:02your word is
15:04so great already.
15:06Di ba?
15:06Sinasabi niya.
15:08That's what I'm thinking about before,
15:09but right now,
15:10I don't think it's applicable.
15:13No.
15:13Pero alam mo ngayon,
15:14ngayon mga panahon ngayon,
15:16you know,
15:16I think the most,
15:17the most impactful
15:19talagang may,
15:20ano eh,
15:21is the one that has credibility,
15:23you know?
15:23Yes.
15:23Credibility is the most important.
15:26May mga tao rin,
15:27mahirap kang,
15:27mahirap mong singilin
15:28and all this,
15:29but again,
15:30sa akin kasi,
15:31you may get around with it,
15:33but again,
15:34I always say,
15:35word might be working against you.
15:38Yes.
15:38Tama po yan.
15:39In other words,
15:40probably,
15:42your clients will not trust you anymore
15:46and word of mouth
15:46can be against you.
15:48Di ba?
15:48Tama po,
15:48kasi importante diyan
15:49yung credibility
15:50at yung integrity po.
15:52Oo.
15:53So,
15:53yun yung importante doon,
15:55no?
15:55I think,
15:56basically yun ang
15:57sinasabi ni Lolo Gonzalo
15:59ngayon.
16:00Kahit di mo ako bayaran ngayon,
16:01okay lang,
16:02but,
16:03hindi naman niya,
16:05hindi niya may kakagutom yun,
16:07di ba?
16:07Yan yung sinasabi natin.
16:08Pero,
16:09it remains there
16:10in the universe,
16:11di ba?
16:12Kumbaga,
16:13bahala ka na.
16:15Ako,
16:15I've done my part.
16:16In other words,
16:17ganoon,
16:17di ba?
16:17So,
16:18yeah.
16:19So,
16:20you said that he led
16:23a prayerful life.
16:25Yes,
16:26tama po.
16:26Ano-ano yung mga devotion
16:28na nakakita mo
16:29kay Lolo Gonzalo
16:30and you're always,
16:32you're almost,
16:33you're always what?
16:34Ilang years kang
16:35na tumira with him?
16:37Ah,
16:37okay.
16:38I was with my Lolo.
16:39Magiging housemate kami,
16:40more than 20 plus years,
16:44no?
16:44Okay.
16:45And then,
16:46we were roommate,
16:48roommate more than 12 years.
16:50So,
16:51mga ginagawa niya,
16:53nakikita ko talaga.
16:54Eh,
16:54yung ginagawa ko naman,
16:55nakikita rin niya.
16:57So,
16:57na-absorb mo yung kanyang ginagawa,
17:00no?
17:00Yung kanyang lifestyle.
17:02Ano bang,
17:02ano bang healthy lifestyle
17:04ni Lolo Gonzalo?
17:05Ah,
17:06lifestyle,
17:06eh,
17:07eh,
17:07always tell me to,
17:08ano eh,
17:09eat healthy food.
17:11No?
17:12Yeah.
17:13Tapos yung ano,
17:14sleep early.
17:15Go to gym.
17:17Yung mga ganyan,
17:18ito po,
17:18ito isabi sa akin,
17:19for you to have a good,
17:21um,
17:21yung sa ano ba,
17:23lifestyle.
17:24And live a long life,
17:25ito isabi pa natin sa akin.
17:26And pray.
17:28And talking about long life,
17:29how long did he live?
17:31Ah,
17:31he,
17:32um,
17:33around 94 years old,
17:35eh.
17:35He,
17:36how many years old?
17:3794.
17:38Wow.
17:3994 years old.
17:4094,
17:41short of 6 years na.
17:42Yeah,
17:43short of 6 years to 100.
17:45Oo.
17:46So,
17:46that's really a long life,
17:49ah.
17:49Yun ang mga,
17:49I'm sure,
17:50he enjoyed seeing,
17:51uh,
17:52the grandchildren,
17:54and the other.
17:55Oo.
17:56Yeah.
17:56So,
17:57tell me,
17:58um,
17:59nowadays kasi ngayon,
18:00ah,
18:00Dennis,
18:01ah,
18:02masyadong maraming destruction.
18:04How would,
18:05ah,
18:06your Lolo now,
18:07probably,
18:08if he were alive,
18:09today?
18:10Yeah,
18:11may Lolo.
18:11Ano kaya sasabihin ni Lolo Gonzalo
18:13sa mga pamumuhay
18:14at, ah,
18:16yung mga negosyo
18:17na nangyayari ngayon?
18:18Ano kaya sasabihin niya
18:19kung buhay siya?
18:20Ah,
18:21I think,
18:22um,
18:22ah,
18:23one of,
18:23one of which is that was sabihin niya,
18:25um,
18:25nakikita niya na,
18:27you know,
18:28live,
18:28ah,
18:29live within your means.
18:32Yan.
18:33Within,
18:33within your means.
18:34You know,
18:35don't overspend.
18:37You know,
18:37kasi overspend,
18:38a time will come,
18:39magkakautang,
18:41something like that eh.
18:42Mm-hmm.
18:42So,
18:43ang nakikita ko sa kanya,
18:45um,
18:45yun,
18:45ah,
18:46live,
18:46ah,
18:47within your means.
18:48So,
18:48you can live comfortably.
18:50Di ba?
18:50Kung you always overspend,
18:53spend with,
18:53ah,
18:54you know,
18:54yung mga hindi,
18:54naman kailangan i-spend,
18:57di ba,
18:57ah,
18:57magkakaroon ng problema
18:59in the near future.
19:01Especially when,
19:01ah,
19:02especially pagtanda,
19:03kailangan siyempre ng,
19:04ah,
19:05yung mga funds,
19:06no,
19:06yung mga,
19:07ano for the,
19:07you know,
19:08sa hospital,
19:09something like that,
19:09no?
19:10Correct,
19:10correct.
19:10Tapos,
19:11another thing naman,
19:12nakikita ko sa kanya,
19:13na,
19:13ano lang,
19:14ah,
19:14simple life,
19:15as long as also,
19:16if you can help,
19:17help,
19:18help the people.
19:20Now,
19:20bago,
19:20ano,
19:21you have to pay back to the society,
19:23which,
19:23oh,
19:23yung paying it forward,
19:25di ba,
19:25yung,
19:25the society help you a lot,
19:27no?
19:27Because of,
19:28kinawa mo rin,
19:28tsaka kasi nakita ko talaga,
19:30Mr. Bartolome,
19:31my lolo is really blessed,
19:33eh,
19:33sa nakikita ko.
19:35Because,
19:35you know what,
19:36I can say,
19:37you know,
19:37this,
19:37because some businessmen,
19:39they have to try and try
19:41until you succeed,
19:43but my lolo,
19:44he tried once lang,
19:46and then he succeeded.
19:49So talaga,
19:49in other words,
19:50single mind,
19:51single product siya,
19:53no?
19:53In other words,
19:55alcohol,
19:56alcohol.
19:56Next step,
19:58zone rock.
19:58Yes,
19:58zone rock.
19:59But it's still,
20:00it's still liquid,
20:01it's still,
20:02you know,
20:03chemical based,
20:04pero focus siya.
20:06Yes,
20:06yes.
20:07Hindi yung,
20:08meron kang product ngayon,
20:09pero iba-iba na yung negosyo mo ngayon,
20:11to the point,
20:12meron ka na iba-ibang negosyo,
20:14di ba?
20:15No,
20:15no,
