00:00It's been 10 years of hard work for her.
00:02I know it looks easy, but there's a lot of work going into this.
00:05I'll be a mixologist at the beach bar while you go off scuba diving.
00:08Guys, congratulations on the show.
00:10Oh, first and foremost, Jeremy, I must say, I never get my parents to watch anything.
00:14So when I go home for Christmas, it's a strain.
00:17We watched War Horse recently.
00:19Well, not recently, it was Christmas.
00:21Oh, that's very sweet.
00:22It's the same horse people who did that, that are doing this.
00:26Really?
00:26Yeah, and they did say that some of the horses from War Horse are still just about kicking around.
00:31I think there's one that's still on our show.
00:34Really?
00:34I need to go and reconnect.
00:37Not Chopper's?
00:37I can't remember the name.
00:38No.
00:40There was no dramatic reunion.
00:43You're filming to see this horse comes bolting over the fence.
00:47Steven Spielberg is sprinting after him.
00:49Yeah, no, no, no.
00:50That would have been good.
00:50We did all that on camera for the movie.
00:53What was it like?
00:54It was interesting seeing you back in World War One again, and I thought that must have
00:58been a bit of a nostalgic trip, because it was right at the start of your career.
01:02It must have been this incredible experience, and then suddenly you're back in all the garb
01:05explosions going off.
01:06It was one of the things where I realized the scale of this production, because I walked
01:10onto the set.
01:11It was the first thing that we shot, the big First World War sequence, and it was pretty
01:16much the same scale and sort of epic size as War Horse.
01:20It was, yeah, it really reminded me of it.
01:22And I sort of went, oh, wow, they've got a budget, this TV show.
01:26Like, they're really going for it.
01:28So, yeah, very cool.
01:29How did you guys prepare to be in a show like this?
01:32Brand new show, but seven series, going to be eight series of the original, a lot of
01:37lore, a lot of baggage, a lot of fan base, all that kind of stuff.
01:42Where do you start?
01:44Do you just try and keep it completely fresh, or did you bury yourselves in there?
01:46Did you go to a Kaylee?
01:47Like, what's the way to...
01:49Go to a Kaylee.
01:49Yeah, I got pissed at several weddings.
01:52Perfect.
01:52So you're hired.
01:53Well, we had two time periods to span, obviously.
01:59So we kind of, we had to, most of our research, probably, I would say for me at least, was
02:03World War I, because once we get to the 18th century, we're not really meant to know what's
02:08going on, I suppose.
02:09Yeah, they're fish out of water by that time.
02:11Yeah, didn't have to kind of look into the customs, per se.
02:14We learned to ride.
02:15We went and did all that, like a lot of, you did a bit of a fighting training.
02:19I didn't do any fighting training yet.
02:21But, you know, what's also really important is our chemistry, and so 10 years ago, me
02:25and Hermione started being friends, just building up to this moment, and it's been 10 years
02:29of hard work for her, but, yeah, we've, finally it's paying off, eh?
02:34Yeah, exactly, yeah.
02:35Going method, I mean, that's, that's perfect.
02:37That's how you get results, guys.
02:38It is.
02:39That's how you get an Emmy.
02:40It is.
02:40I know it looks easy, but there's a lot of work went into this.
02:44When you guys signed up for this, was there a part of you which had a side relief that
02:47you weren't playing Scotsman?
02:51Yes.
02:52Because, like, Harriet's got a fantastic accent in this, but being surrounded in Scottish
02:56actors, there would be this voice in my head going, oh, please don't be ruining this.
03:00I'd be, every little sideways glance, I'd be like, oh, and I ruined that sentence.
03:04That's a lot of work, you know, to really nail an accent in the way that, you know, Harriet
03:09has done.
03:09That's a lot of work, and, yeah, I've got to say, it was nice not to have that pressure
03:15on me, personally.
03:17Yeah, I actually originally auditioned for Ellen, because I did, I did an indie playing
03:22a Scottish, playing a woman from the Hebrides, although the accent, they wanted, like, more
03:27of an Edinburgh, Glasgow, yeah, I'd say more like a sort of Glasgow accent, so, I had done
03:35it before, and that was a heck load of work.
03:37I mean, I love doing accents, it's a great way to get into character.
03:41I think so, I think it takes you away from yourself a bit, which I really enjoy.
03:45Yeah, well, I mean, we've changed our voices slightly for this.
03:48Yes, we've been more, a bit more RP.
03:51Yeah.
03:52We might get into character, like, the clothes are a big thing.
03:55Anytime I've worn, like, an outfit, a costume, it's always felt, like, very ill-fitting and
04:02itchy and whatnot, but for you guys, I know it's kind of your bread and butter for getting
04:06into a character, so what did you enjoy about that?
04:08Did you prefer the, kind of, World War I stuff to the old, kind of, Scottish Takamari stuff?
04:12But that you only get to do when you're on set, so actually, the getting into character,
04:15you actually don't have that until you're actually filming, by which point, you probably
04:18should have done your homework and figured out what you're doing.
04:21Yeah.
04:21I mean, yeah, if you're figuring out your character the morning of shooting.
04:25Which some films you do have to do that, because you don't watch characters you're
04:28playing until you're in a costume fitting, which I've had before.
04:30Yeah, oh, really?
04:31Top seat, when it's, like, so secret, you don't know what you're doing.
04:33Oh, it was after Star Wars, was it?
04:34Yeah.
04:35Yeah, I can imagine that one.
04:36Oh, that's what I am, I'm saying.
04:40But, yeah, I think it definitely helps.
04:42I always find, like, when you're in a costume fitting, it's, like, it's always a discussion,
04:46isn't it, really, with, like, the costume designer, like, do you think they'd wear this?
04:50Do you have which handbag?
04:50Like, so it does, it definitely, like, I think informs certain things.
04:56Yeah.
04:57How do you feel about joining a show that has such a, kind of, history and a, you've both
05:03done things, but, I mean, going into Star Wars, there's pretty much nothing in the world
05:06that's going to have the same amount of, kind of, of baggage and fan base and expectation
05:12as something like that.
05:13So, I imagine that was, like, a pretty good training for doing something like this.
05:18But there is a certain level out there and there's a lot of expectation on a show like
05:25this.
05:26So, yeah, has that been a fun part of it, a fun side of it?
05:29Have you seen any of that interaction between, kind of, those original OG fans yet or not?
05:34Well, yeah, but we sort of film in this bubble in Scotland.
05:37Yeah.
05:37And, you know, it's very easy to forget that anyone's actually ever going to watch it
05:41when we're sort of working in that enclosed, sort of, I don't know, close-knit group.
05:46Yeah.
05:46And then, for me, it was only when we started doing press.
05:48And we sort of went out to New York and L.A. and stuff.
05:51And, you know, in the States, it's just, it's so popular out there.
05:55Yeah.
05:55And it's such a privilege, you know.
05:57Normally, you're just praying that somebody watches the thing that you spent a year of
06:01your life working on.
06:02And to have an existing audience, I just feel very, very lucky.
06:06I'm amazed that the Americans love it as much as they do because I know, like, people love
06:11a sweeping romance and throwing a bit of, kind of, like, timey-wimey stuff in there,
06:14all the better.
06:15But, like, they don't, like, they don't, they don't smooth off the rough edges of, like,
06:20the Scottishness of it.
06:22Like, it's...
06:22I'm amazed they can understand any of it.
06:24I think some people said they need subtitles.
06:26Yeah.
06:26I've had, when we went to American Screening, I had people being like, yeah, definitely going
06:29to need some subtitles on that.
06:33But I think people like that.
06:34I think people like the fact that they haven't, you know, polished it up too much in terms
06:39of...
06:40And if you think you've got Scottish heritage, which I think, so to say, a lot of Americans
06:44do, then, yeah, I guess it's a Scottish romance thing.
06:48A lot of Americans think they've got some heritage from, like, 300 years ago.
06:50Yeah, I'm Irish.
06:51I'm like, ah, I don't know.
06:52I think you've got a great, great, great, great, great grandmother might have been Irish.
06:55When pressed, I'll try and push that, I'm part Scottish as well.
06:57So I think we all do it, don't we?
06:59I mean, yeah, my grandma was Scottish.
07:00There you go.
07:01You see, you're doing it too now.
07:02You see, we're all guilty of it.
07:03But she had a thick Preston accent by the time I came along, so I can't cling on to it
07:07too much.
07:09One thing I did learn about the original series is that they kind of sort of like jumping
07:13all over the place.
07:15I thought it was just like set in Scotland.
07:16They were in one place, then they were in Scotland, and that's where it was, but they
07:19end up in America and all sorts.
07:21And it made me wonder, that must be quite exciting as an actor to think, oh, we're going to explore
07:26this topic or in this place.
07:28So is there another area of history where you guys would like to see your characters
07:31crop up in and sort of make a home for themselves in?
07:35Well, we were thinking some kind of like Brazil or...
07:39You want to go to Brazil?
07:40Somewhere hot.
07:41Oh, yeah, no, somewhere nice to film.
07:42I'm thinking we end up in Australia.
07:43Oh, Greek islands.
07:44Greek islands.
07:45Yeah.
07:45Maybe something like that.
07:47Yeah, I think they probably would.
07:48I think they would, and I think they would work in some sort of cocktail beach bar.
07:53Let's just workshop this now, and the producers will be watching.
07:56They'll be taking notes.
07:56Yeah, if we can...
07:58I think Julia becomes like a marine biologist that has good diving.
08:04Great.
08:04Yeah.
08:05What do they call those people who make cocktails, but they give themselves like a scientific name?
08:09Oh, if you're called a mixologist?
08:12Mixologist, that's the one.
08:13I'll be a mixologist at the beach bar while you go off scuba diving.
08:16Diving, yeah.
08:17Just call it ologist.
08:17Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:19Guys, I'm looking forward to that series.
08:21Lovely.
08:21A spin-off for the spin-off.
08:22Why not?
08:23Yeah.
08:24But good luck with this one.
08:25Really enjoyed it.
08:25And hopefully I'll catch you guys in 12 months time, maybe.
08:28Absolutely, yeah.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Talk about where you've ended up then.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Lots to come.
08:32Thanks so much.
08:32Thanks, mate.
08:33Lovely stuff.
08:34It was great.
08:35Good luck, mate.
08:35Cheers, mate.
08:35Yeah, yeah, you too, buddy.
08:36Yeah.
