00:12What is the motivation to take on this wonderful family story more than a dark thing?
00:18I've done quite a lot of dark things.
00:20I was really excited.
00:22I've been wanting to make a film like this for a long, long time.
00:26You know, I love the Paddington films.
00:27I love family films generally and I especially love family films that feel tactile and analogue
00:35and visceral and like handmade, handcrafted and the craftspeople in this film are so incredible
00:41and the sets are so incredible and the actors are so incredible.
00:46And Simon is a man that I've been a fan of as a writer for a long, long time and
00:49obviously
00:49he worked on those Paddington movies.
00:52So I read the script, I fell in love.
00:54I fell in love with the character.
00:55I fell in love with all the characters, with the ideas, with the themes, with the story
00:59itself and the world.
01:01And I thought, wow, there's so much beautiful potential in this.
01:05So it was really a no brainer once I read that script and met with the creative heads.
01:11We're hoping that we make children believe in magic, don't we?
01:14What's the thing that made you believe in magic when you were a kid?
01:16Oh wow.
01:18Man, it wasn't hard.
01:19I feel like we're all born with a capacity to see the things that now as adults we can't
01:29see anymore.
01:30Like the things that exist in the world.
01:32And so it's more of the question of where does it get lost for me and how do you go
01:38back
01:38to that place of awe and wonder and imagination and dreaming and possibility.
01:44Did you feel that on set perhaps when you're trying to get back to that mindset?
01:48Yeah.
01:48And I think the character is that.
01:50The character is trying to bang the drum to lead the charge back towards a way of living
01:55that is, you know, nature based, imagination based and full of awe and wonder.
02:02What did you feel to be the most magical day on set for you?
02:06Oh gosh.
02:08We had a lot of pretty magical days.
02:09Any time with these young actors, any time with these three, with Billy, Delilah and Phoenix,
02:15honestly felt very, very joyful and full of awe.
02:17Can I tell you that their answer was the spaghetti eating contest day?
