00:00Listen it's good to see you. You too. Tell me all about In The Meantime. In The Meantime, well
00:04Meantime, it's Frankie Boyle's novel set just after the referendum about as we call in Scotland
00:11you could arguably call this guy a Jake and he wakes up one morning and he's he's he's been
00:19accused of murdering his best friend and so instead of taking it he decides to try and solve the
00:24crime himself with the aid of various cocktails of narcotics and other substances.
00:31Why would you keep doing this to yourself playing these types of characters James honestly just
00:35when are you going to do a rom-com? Oh man I don't know I don't know but I'm getting
00:39to
00:39do it with one of my favourite directors of all time John S Baird with whom I made Filth
00:45the adaptation of Irvin Welsh's novel of the same name and he's an amazing collaborator
00:50somebody that I love working with and then getting to work on somebody like Frankie's material and
00:55really delve into it and understand why this character Felix McAviti is going through what
01:01he's going through it's just it's it's a good thing to sink into. Are you keeping your own accent for
01:06this?
01:07Yeah whatever my accent is anymore according to my friends back home they're like what is your
01:12accent these days? Yeah no I'm keeping my own accent. It's probably coming out more because you're talking to me
01:16as well
01:16maybe maybe St Glasgow yeah that's good you want to keep your own accent you've also got California
01:21scheming as well how's that going? California scheming coming out April 10th cinemas nationwide and in
01:27Ireland and yeah it's coming out soon really proud of it really couldn't have hoped for it to be
01:35it's good is it no I'm joking really couldn't have hoped to make the film that I wanted to make
01:41to
01:41make something entertaining that represents people from the kind of place I came from from working class
01:46council estates and it's not just about poverty and it's not just about unemployment it's about
01:51aspiration and it is entertaining and it is real as well and there are hard knocks on it but I'm
01:57really proud of it and I'm really proud of my cast and and all my collaborators really. And I know
02:02you've
02:02done so many amazing things but how important is you to represent Scottish culture on screen? Do you know
02:08what it's it's important for me to work and it's important for me just to make my way in this
02:13industry
02:13which is really difficult to do when you're from Scotland because there's just not a lot of work
02:18made in Scotland and not even all the work in Scotland is about Scottish people so when you get
02:24to play somebody Scottish or when you get to make something like I did with my first film about Scottish
02:28people for Scottish people I think it's going to go well worldwide but I wanted to make something that
02:35Scottish people would feel excited to watch and see themselves represented so that
02:39um it is important when you get the chance and I don't always get the chance. And we've got the
02:44world cup coming up I mean are you excited for it what's what's the situation? I'm excited for it
02:48I mean I'm working the Friday and I'm working the Monday in Glasgow and I'm still thinking about
02:52going to Boston on Saturday so don't tell Sky that they're employing me. Martin Constance said the same
02:58thing he's filming line of duty and he's like I'm going to need time off for it. I'll probably be
03:01in a pub at two o'clock in the morning in Glasgow but
03:04um I do have a ticket for the Haiti game. Do you? Well go to help us get tickets James
03:09we're all
03:09struggling out here we need to help us out. I just don't know if I can get there and back
03:13in time without
03:14costing Sky a lot of money so we're at a Sky event tonight if one of the Sky high ups
03:18decides to let
03:19me go that'd be most appreciated. You could just give a ticket to me. I will yeah seriously thank you
03:24so
03:24much lovely to see you. Thank you very much James thank you. Hi nice to see you again. Nice to
03:29see you again. Where did you see me last?
03:30Last time I saw you you were moonlighting and doing two interviews for different outlets at the same
03:36time. Because I'm booked and busy. I'm so impressed. So booked and busy. And last time we were talking
03:41about how good you were as a serial killer. Oh yes. And now not a serial killer but still a
03:49guy with some
03:50secrets. Still a guy that's a bit sus my character in The Verbs you know. At one point you never
03:57really
03:57think he's a killer. And working with Kiki Palmer I mean dream right. She's amazing. She is like just
04:05an absolute unicorn and was yeah a joy to work with. She's so funny and so endearing and a brilliant
04:14actress and yeah she's so good in this show. So for anybody that doesn't know anything about The Verbs give
04:20us a synopsis. You're good at this. The Verbs is inspired by the 1980s Tom Hanks movie. It's about a
04:27couple that moved to the suburbs to this very quiet provincial street but it turns out that there's
04:34lots of dark secrets and you can't trust anyone in the neighborhood. That's a TV show I'm absolutely
04:41going to binge. Tell me what was the last TV show that you binged? Last night I watched six episodes
04:48of Age of Innocence which is like Love is Blind but you have to lie about your age. It's great
04:54yeah. It
04:55sounds really wrong. It sounds like a social experiment too far but it's actually riveting.
05:03Even though it's abundantly clear how old all of them are but I guess that's you know part of the
05:09fun.
05:10I know this is really hard but who's your favourite TV character of all time?
05:15David Bren? Maybe. Adam Hartridge? If you can play any TV character in any TV show so far who would
05:26it be?
05:29I'd like to check into The White Lotus. That would be great. So any character in The White Lotus.
05:36Why hasn't this happened yet? I don't know. This is how we manifest it. I'll sort it out. It's aired
05:40on IGN and hopefully Mike White's watching. I'll sort it out. I've got his direct line. Just finally we're talking
05:46about accents. Have you ever had to do any accents for any jobs that you've done and if so which
05:52has been the hardest?
05:54I've done a few accents. I did an American accent in Clifford the Big Red Dog which I thought I'd
06:00nailed and then
06:00they showed a clip on the Graham Norton show and
06:04Olivia Colman did not agree.
06:06And to be fair neither did a lot of social media.
06:09So that one
06:10I didn't actually find that challenging at the time
06:12but subsequently with hindsight
06:14it turned out it was more challenging than I thought.
06:17What do you think would be the hardest?
06:20I feel like
06:22whenever I've done Geordie before
06:24it always
06:25veers into dangerous territory.
06:28And I do attempt it quite a lot.
06:30Especially when I'm on stage in Newcastle.
06:32But we end up in Kingston, Jamaica quite quickly.
06:35I want to hear your Scottish.
06:37My Scottish?
06:39Ah, sorry.
06:40Ah, it isn't.
06:41I'm just a man.
06:43We're messing on that note.
06:44It's good to see you.
06:44You're in just one chat today.
06:46Good to see yous.
06:47Good to see yous.
06:48Scottish?
06:49I'd like to be Scottish.
06:50Yeah, you could.
06:51Good to see you.
06:52Hi, hi.
06:53How did you plan this outfit?
06:54Yous are kind of matching.
06:55He told me he was wearing this suit
06:57so I decided to not wear a suit.
06:59We always turn up to things
07:01and we're dressed embarrassingly similarly.
07:03So he told me
07:04I'm wearing a blue suit and a blue shirt
07:06so don't wear the same as me.
07:08And do you finish each other's sentences?
07:09Is this a match made in heaven?
07:11Well, we've made a few successful series from doing just that.
07:17So tell me all about this new show then.
07:19Well, it's in Scandinavia.
07:21It's called The Trip to the Northern Lights.
07:23A lot of it is in Norway, which is the most stunning country you will see.
07:29Just amazing.
07:30We drive around, we eat nice food, we bicker a little and we contemplate the passing of time.
07:36How was it for you?
07:38Exactly what he said.
07:40Yeah, it was a very different experience.
07:42Yeah, it was, yeah, it was, we did, it's our fifth series.
07:46We did four, kind of a couple of years apart each one.
07:49The first one we did was in 2010, I think, is that right?
07:52Mm-hm.
07:53So that's a long time ago.
07:57And then we took, we'd taken a break, we'd done other things and none of them worked out.
08:03So we decided we'd come back and do another trip.
08:06So the moral of the story is you both still like each other.
08:09Oh, yeah.
08:09Don't we think we'd tolerate each other?
08:11No, I think we like each other more than ever, but maybe that's just me.
08:15No, we do like each other.
08:15And then what we do is for the trip, we kind of play up our, we kind of sometimes seek,
08:20not all the time,
08:21we seek kind of a discord because it's fair for laughs.
08:25Well, I need to let you go and get in, but it's lovely to see you both, you're both looking
08:28well.
08:29Thank you very much.
08:30Thank you very much. Thank you.
08:30Great to come.
08:31You're looking well.
08:33Exactly.
08:34The show that I have coming up next is called The Good Daughter, and it stars Rose Byrne,
08:41who is just absolutely heaven, and Brendan Gleeson plays our dad, and he's also just unbelievable.
08:48I'm pinching myself that I got to work with both of them.
08:51I was obsessed with both of them before, and I'm even more obsessed with them now than I've worked with
08:55them
08:55because they're just, beyond being incredible actors and artists, they're amazing people.
09:01So, you're also amazing. So, tell me about what character you're playing in this.
09:07Rose and I play sisters. The strange sisters. So, we've been apart for 20 years.
09:13And the show kind of starts with us sort of coming back into each other's lives after a traumatic event
09:20in the first episode,
09:21and just kind of watching all of that family drama and trauma unfold.
09:28I'm going to binge that. That's something I would binge, absolutely.
09:31Yeah.
09:32What was the last TV show you binged?
09:34I've been saying, and it's true, The Burbs, which Jack Whitehall is starring in with Kiki Palmer.
09:40It's on Peacock in the States, and I watched it in a day. I loved it so much.
09:45I know this is really hard, but who's your favourite TV character of all time, I know?
09:51It's not really that hard, because I would have to say Seth Cohen from The O.C.
09:57It's pretty, that's an easy one for me.
10:00And if you could have played any role in TV, what would it have been?
10:05Probably Marissa Cooper. Even though, she doesn't date Seth Cohen, though.
10:11Anyways.
10:12And just finally, I know we're talking about accents.
10:14Have you ever had to do accents for any projects, and so what's been the hardest one you've had to
10:19do?
10:20Yes, I'm doing a northern Georgian accent, north Georgia accent, in The Good Daughter.
10:28And I just recently finished a film at the end of last year where I did a British English accent,
10:35and girl, I am scared about that movie coming out.
10:38I do not know how that went.
10:40So lovely to see you. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you, Andrew.
10:43Thank you. It's lovely to see you. This is very exciting.
10:47I mean, tell me all about your Sky Up Next project.
10:51So, I'm in a thing called War, which is about two opposing law firms in London.
10:57One of them is Cathcartes, which is a very kind of staid old law firm, one of those that's sort
11:04of been around forever.
11:05And I'm the senior associate partner in that law firm. My name is Her Majesty.
11:12She's known as Her Majesty, you know. That's her reputation, which she likes to upkeep.
11:17And the other is called Taylor & Byrne, who are a younger, funkier kind of law firm.
11:21And this first series of ours deals with the divorce of the century.
11:26So, a technical, a technique, tech magnate and a famous actress are getting divorced.
11:35This is actually the type of show that I would binge. Like, honestly, everything you've just described, I'm like, tick,
11:40tick, tick, I would binge that.
11:42What was the last TV show you binged?
11:44The last TV show I binged was Shrinking.
11:48Oh, that's a good one.
11:49It's amazing. It's amazing. Yeah, I love it.
11:51And I know this is a hard question, but is there any TV character in any show that you would
11:56love to have played?
11:59Yes, I'd have liked to have played. It's a bit old.
12:02I'd have liked to have played Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica.
12:06There you go. Or anything in The Mandalorian.
12:09That would make so much sense. We need to make, we need to get you in that universe.
12:13Get that coming round again and yeah, I'll be there.
12:16And who's your favourite TV character of all time?
12:22Maybe it's Frasier.
12:25It might be. It's either Frasier or Niles Crane, actually. I think Niles Crane is kind of a bit of
12:30a genius creation.
12:33These are fire answers. Everything they're saying, I'm like, absolutely.
12:36And I heard you slightly doing a bit of a Scottish accent there.
12:39Tell me, I don't know how much accent work you've had to do in your career, but if you have,
12:44what's been the hardest accent you've had to do?
12:46The hardest accent I've had to do?
12:49Do you know, it's really fun around everyone.
12:52Oh, well, I did a, I've done a couple of audio books and for those I had to do quite
12:57a few different accents.
12:58So swapping between, I found swapping between Welsh and Irish particularly tricky.
13:04Swapping between them?
13:05Because I had to speak as different characters, but it was fun.
13:08Nah, it's not for the vain-hearted.
13:10That sounds so lovely to see you. Thank you so much, I can't wait to binge your show now.
13:14Honestly, that's right on my show.
13:15I love the linking of arms that we've got here.
13:19Is this like a representation of how everybody's feeling right now ahead of the launch of SNL?
13:23It's like a rugby scrum. Actually, I don't know anything about rugby, but it feels like a rugby scrum. It's
13:29like we've just got to get into it.
13:30There's 11 of us and we've also got 18 writers and we just, we scrum it out.
13:34And that's how we write. We all get in there, get in each other's bodies.
13:38And the show's live. I think that's important for people to know.
13:40It's going to be a live show on Saturday, I guess.
13:44It's Saturday night.
13:45Well, Saturday nights would make sense.
13:48I think they were thinking about whether it should be on a Tuesday, but they thought we'll go with Saturday
13:52because of the title.
13:53And now it does, it sort of flows as well.
13:56TNL UK doesn't sound as good as SNL UK.
13:59No, it doesn't, but that sounds like a shopping channel or something.
14:01Yeah, that's what it's giving.
14:03But listen, how much of an honour is it to be a part of SNL UK?
14:06This has been such a long time coming.
14:08Yeah, it's crazy. I mean, I feel like it's still sinking in.
14:11Yeah, it's hard for it to fully sink in because it's like, I don't think your brain can comprehend that
14:16properly.
14:17It's like one minute, you're like a simple northern guy from a northern town.
14:21And then you're like, I'm linking arms with Anya Magliano on the purple carpet.
14:25Pinch me.
14:26It's a real pinch me moment.
14:28And by the way, IT exclusive, she will.
14:31Listen, talking about pinching yourselves, you've got Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Raz Ahmed.
14:37I mean, how are you coping with trying not to be starstruck?
14:39How do you feel about Jamie coming in?
14:42I would be pinching myself.
14:45It's very hot on this carpet.
14:47I feel like with the starstruckness, you just have to dissociate a bit and be like, this is my colleague
14:55for the week.
14:56My colleague is Tina Fey.
14:57Yeah.
14:58But there is part of you that just goes, you can't fully see her as a normal person because her
15:02hair is so shiny.
15:03But it's just like practical.
15:04That's the giveaway.
15:05Yeah.
15:06Our hair isn't that shiny yet.
15:08If SNL goes for 50 years and we become millionaires, our hair will be that shiny.
15:11You'll know.
15:12They'll need to, yeah, do a few of these lights.
15:14Also, Tina's like one of the institutions of the SNL, do you know what I mean?
15:18So what's it been like actually getting to work with her?
15:22It's pretty exciting.
15:24I would say.
15:25She sat in on one of our, we're doing weekend update and she sat in on one of our writers'
15:29rooms and so we had to do jokes to her.
15:31And whenever she laughed, it felt like the same as when you make your crush laugh.
15:34It was like, oh my God.
15:36Yeah, it was very much like that.
15:38It was that.
15:38And Jamie Dornan, is he sat in yet or?
15:41I guess he, maybe next week.
15:43Hopefully next week.
15:44If Jamie doesn't come next week, we'll have to like reschedule him.
15:47Yeah.
15:47We'll do Tuesday night.
15:49Are you in touch with Dornan's people?
15:50I actually am.
15:51Jamie's a lovely guy.
15:52Really?
15:52There's a rule that all Celts, we all know each other.
15:54We're all in a collective group chat.
15:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:56This is the thing.
15:57Scottish, Irish, Welsh.
15:58It's all the Western group.
15:58Yeah, it's all, everybody part, part English.
16:01Unfortunately, it's all the Celts.
16:03I'm getting on.
16:04Listen guys, good luck.
16:05Wait, I actually can't wait to see it.
16:06Thank you so much.
16:06It's going to be amazing.
16:07I'm going to smash it.
16:08Thank you so much.
16:09I love it to you both.
16:10I will.
16:10Have a good evening.
16:11I'm looking forward to Jamie hosting particularly.
16:14I'm really, I'm really excited.
16:15I love Sky.
16:16I have Sky.
16:16I've been a Sky boy since I was like five years old.
16:19Confirming you've not been paid to say that.
16:21No, don't worry.
16:22I actually am.
16:23My mum is a Sky girl, so yeah.
16:25I love it.
16:25Right, listen, tell me.
16:26What was the latest show that you've finged?
16:29I'm currently watching Paradise on Disney+.
16:32Really good.
16:33And they drop episodes weekly, so I'm still not caught up yet.
16:36But really, really good.
16:37Do you prefer the weekly thing or would you rather just binge it?
16:40Just put them all out.
16:41And like, so Sequel Life Mom and Wives, which is incredible, they put it all out.
16:45And I'm like, yes, I can just spend a whole day watching ten episodes and it's just great.
16:49But the weekly thing, it's not really my vibe.
16:52Yeah.
16:52I've got no self control or patience for it.
16:54Do it with Bridgerton.
16:55They'll do like part one, part two, part three.
16:57Like, just give me it all.
16:59Right, if you could be a TV character in any show of all time, what one would it be?
17:04Oh, that is a great, great question to be fair.
17:07Do you know what?
17:07I'd probably be Cat on the Seventy in Hunger Games.
17:10I don't know why that's the first thing that's just come to my head, but she's pretty cool, so.
17:13Are you good at archery?
17:15See, I'm a Sagittarius so naturally.
17:17Okay, fair.
17:18No, it's not one of my talents, but.
17:19It's actually really hard.
17:21I can't imagine.
17:24And how is life after the Traitors?
17:26Crazy.
17:26It's crazy because this is such a long time.
17:29I feel like I did it years and years ago.
17:31It was only two years ago and it has honestly changed my life for the best.
17:35So it's actually been incredible.
17:36And this season was so good as well, so it's nice to watch it at home.
17:39What is it like just watching the show go from strength to strength?
17:42I just think with the Traitors, it's everyone's hook.
17:46It's a family show.
17:46Kids watch it.
17:47Adults watch it.
17:48Who doesn't have a murder mystery?
17:50It is amazing.
17:51And watching it when I'm not in it is so much better.
17:53Because I have no anxiety thinking, what have I said in this episode?
17:56Who's going to be annoyed with me?
17:57So it's all good.
17:58Is there any shows that you would love to do now?
18:00Oh, I don't know, you know.
18:02I quite like Inside, Sidemen.
18:04I quite like that idea.
18:06I quite like a bit of Big Brother.
18:07I quite like a bit of anything really.
18:10Just sort of, I like to like just do things and put myself out of my comfort zone to like
18:14just see what it's like basically.
18:15Well I'm chatting to some people from Sidemen tomorrow so I'll put in a good word for you.
18:19You tell them.
18:19I've got it.
18:20You tell them.
18:20I've got your necklace.
18:21I've got your back.
18:23Nice to meet you.
18:24Thank you so much.
18:25Thank you Angel.
18:26Thank you very much.
