00:00Listen it's good to see you. You too. Tell me all about In The Mean Time. In The Mean Time,
00:04well, Mean Time, it's Frankie Boyle's novel set just after the referendum about, as we call in
00:10Scotland, you could arguably call this guy a Jake, and he wakes up one morning and he's
00:19he's been accused of murdering his best friends and so instead of taking it he decides to try
00:24and solve the crime himself with the aid of various cocktails of narcotics and other substances.
00:31Why would you keep doing this to yourself playing these types of characters James, honestly,
00:35just when are you going to do a rom-com? Oh man, I don't know, I don't know,
00:38but I'm getting to do it with one of my favourite directors of all time, John S. Baird, with whom
00:43I made Filth, the adaptation of Irvin Welsh's novel of the same name, and he's an amazing collaborator,
00:50somebody that I love working with, and then getting to work on somebody like Frankie's material,
00:55and really delve into it and understand why this character, Felix McAviti, is going through what
01:01he's going through. It's just, it's a good thing to sink into. Are you keeping your own accent for this?
01:08Yeah, whatever my accent is anymore, according to my friends back home, they're like, what is your
01:12accent these days? Yeah, no, I'm keeping my own accent. It's probably coming out more because you're
01:16talking to me as well. Maybe, maybe. St Glasgow, so that's good. That's good if you want to keep
01:20your own accent. You've also got California Scheming as well, how's that going? California Scheming
01:23coming out April 10th, cinemas nationwide and in Ireland. Yeah, it's coming out soon,
01:30really proud of it. Really couldn't have hoped for it to be as good. No, I'm joking. Really couldn't
01:38have hoped to make the film that I wanted to make, to make something entertaining that represents
01:43people from the kind of place I came from, from working class council estates. And it's not just
01:48about poverty and it's not just about unemployment, it's about aspiration and it is entertaining.
01:54And it is real as well and there are hard knocks on it. But I'm really proud of it and
01:58I'm really
01:58proud of my cast and all my collaborators, really. And I know you've done so many amazing things,
02:04but how important is you to represent Scottish culture on screen? Do you know what, it's important for me to
02:10work and it's important for me just to make my way in this industry, which is really difficult to do
02:15when you're from Scotland, because there's just not a lot of work made in Scotland and not even
02:20all the work in Scotland is about Scottish people. So when you get to play somebody Scottish or when you
02:25get to make something like I did with my first film about Scottish people for Scottish people,
02:30I think it's going to go well worldwide. But I wanted to make something that Scottish
02:35people would feel excited to watch and see themselves represented. So that, it is important
02:41when you get the chance and I don't always get the chance. And we've got the World Cup coming up.
02:45I mean, are you excited for it? What's the situation? Are you excited for it? I mean,
02:49I'm working the Friday and I'm working the Monday in Glasgow and I'm still thinking about going to
02:52Boston on Saturday. So don't tell Sky that, they're employing me. Martin Colmston said the same thing,
02:58he's filming Line of Duty and he's like, I'm going to need time off for it. I'll probably be in
03:01a pub at two o'clock
03:02in the morning in Glasgow. But I do have a ticket for the Haiti game. Do you? Go to help
03:08us get
03:08tickets, James. We're all struggling out here. We need the celebs to help us out. I just don't know
03:12if I can get there and back in time without costing Sky a lot of money. So we're at a
03:16Sky event tonight.
03:17If one of the Sky high ups decides to let me go, that'd be most appreciated. You could just give
03:21a ticket to me. Seriously. Thank you so much. Lovely to see you. Nice to see you, James. Thank you.
