00:00There's been a lot of Islamophobia since Iran's win, so I wanted to share how Islam has impacted
00:05my life positively as a non-Muslim. For context, I was in a six and a half year relationship with
00:10a Muslim and was willing to raise my future kids in the faith even though I was raised Christian.
00:15That relationship has been over for more than a year, but I still carry some practices with me.
00:20Islam has a huge emphasis on being a good person. Unlike in Christianity,
00:25you can't go to heaven on faith alone. You also need to do good deeds. One of the five pillars of
00:31Islam is zakat, or a charity, and you're required to give away 2.5% of your net wealth each year.
00:38And it's not just your income, it's also your assets. Zakat is what inspired me to donate 10%
00:43of my blogging and social media profits to mutual aid each year, and I've been doing that for four
00:49years now. I also watched my ex selflessly give to everyone on the street who asked.
00:54Seeing that as an example made me start helping people too, instead of viewing them with skepticism
01:00like I was taught. It is literally wrong in Islam to find money on the street and keep it for yourself.
01:05You're supposed to try to find the owner or give it to charity. And besides all that,
01:10my Muslim friends are some of the most generous, justice-oriented, and kind people I know.
01:15I am so sad to see the blatant Islamophobia and racism. I would not be who I am today without Islam
01:21and the people who truly embodied its teachings. Sending all my love to the Muslim community.
