00:00Giving the green light to the redevelopment of the Ainslie Football Club.
00:07This is a really well located site close to public transport, close to local services.
00:13It's a distinct site.
00:15Minister Steele has approved an amendment to the Territory Plan that will see the area around the club's oval rezoned.
00:22It paves the way for between 200 and 400 terrace homes, apartments and townhouses to be built on the oval's north-western and north sides.
00:30An area for mixed use has also been identified, allowing for community facilities, an improved clubhouse and potential commercial ventures.
00:39There are restrictions on the scale of that commercial development so that it doesn't undermine the other shopping centres around the district including the local centre at Ainslie Shops.
00:49Restrictions too on the height of buildings, up to six storeys allowed on the north-western part of the site, a limit of three storeys closer to existing homes.
00:58Some residents remain concerned about the scale of the project and the fact the approval follows a decision by a Legislative Assembly Committee not to hold an enquiry into the proposed change.
01:10Why would you not want to consult with the community over a major change to the Territory Plan?
01:15This is not just relevant to Ainslie, this is a precedent across Canberra.
01:19The football club says it welcomes the Minister's decision, but the amendment to the Territory Plan still needs to be supported by the Legislative Assembly.
01:27If it is supported, a development application will be lodged and the community will be able to have their say.
01:33We will push again then for a more sensible development, inclusion of community housing and more medium density rather than high density, but the reality is that decision has probably been made.
01:44The government says the redevelopment also supports the club in diversifying its revenue source away from poker machines.
01:51This is a big issue.
