Fall-like weather arriving east of the Rockies

Cooler, wetter conditions are moving in to Colorado and surrounding areas, as AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reports.

00:00The Colorado Front Range is one of many areas that will be getting in on a big fall preview.

00:05And AccuWeather meteorologist Tony Laubach joins us now from Denver, Colorado with a big change in the wind here.

00:11Tony, what's coming our way?

00:15Well, we are looking very much forward to it here along the Front Range.

00:18We've been dealing with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and, of course, get a little further west in the mountains.

00:22It's been the wildfires that have been a concern, but all of that is soon to be alleviated.

00:28You see here over my right shoulder all the flags, those are blowing due south.

00:33We have already seen the first of several fronts that have worked its way through here.

00:37We are seeing the temperatures dropping nicely.

00:39We're sitting right about 80 degrees right now.

00:41The AccuWeather real feel I've seen a couple of times has been about 79 degrees here in the Denver area.

00:47So we are already seeing the cooler temperatures start to take hold.

00:50Off to my north, we're starting to see the dark skies as the upslope flow.

00:55The northerly winds around it are going to start to bring in a little bit more moisture and more clouds.

00:59That is going to be a rain concern.

01:01But so far today, it's been absolutely gorgeous.

01:03We'll show you some of the scenes here at one of the shopping centers on the north side of Denver,

01:06where we had folks out and about enjoying the cooler weather.

01:10Like I've mentioned, we've been in the 90s and uncharacteristically humid, if I might add, for a lot of the summer here in Colorado.

01:17We've been seeing off and on rain for the most part throughout most of the month.

01:22But we're really about to get into a pattern that's going to support a lot more widespread rain,

01:26even potential for some flooding rains as that push of monsoon moisture,

01:30which has been lacking overall, is going to start to work its way in,

01:34in addition to the cooler temperatures that we are going to see primarily as we get into next week.

01:39Let's show you the graph of the temperatures we're expecting as we're going into next week.

01:43Folks, get the bell bottoms ready and the disco blasting, because the 70s are about to stick around for a good chunk of next week.

01:51Going to be much, much cooler.

01:53But with that, we're going to see clouds, rain, and the potential for some thunderstorm activity.

01:58Can't rule out a couple of severe thunderstorms as well.

02:01That is something we're going to be eyeballing here this afternoon along the front range

02:05as we kind of get settled into a deeper moisture here along the front range.

02:09The winds will pick up a little bit, and that will increase some of the shears.

02:12So maybe some damaging wind gusts will probably be the primary threat.

02:15Can't rule out some hail as well.

02:17Heavy rain is going to be a concern, especially as we get into later in the weekend, into early next week.

02:22That could bring the potential for some front range flooding.

02:24But, again, the good news is we mentioned this is going to extend back off to the west as well,

02:28so that's going to help with some of the wildfire efforts.

02:30And I don't want to mention this word yet, because I know this is kind of against policy at this time of year,

02:36but above 10,000 feet or so with these cold fronts, guys,

02:39we could be talking about a little bit of snow for some of the highest peaks.

02:42Nothing too crazy, but a word we might be saying here shortly.

02:49We see those cooler signatures here on their temperature forecast for tomorrow,

02:53and we're looking forward to the big blast of cool following that.
