00:00it's a huge series and uh so i've heard a lot of people say the worst the red sox can do here the
00:06worst they were you know they should target for is split split the four games and get out of there
00:10which i will concede to but in the same breath i will tell you that that's still a win for the
00:16yankees they're two games ahead of you now because of your little skid and they're playing better so
00:21that skid has cost you a couple of games in the standings if it lined up the way it is right now
00:26they're at home for the wild or the uh yeah the wild card series and you are on the road so what
00:32if that split also started cut you off consists of garrett crochet losing one of those games and
00:36getting his face kicked in because he wasn't all that great out in houston right so he was good in
00:40the next one albeit against the marlins but they're frisky yeah but but it's a fair point murray and i
00:45look in the middle of the series you got both of those guys going and when i say both of those guys
00:49meaning garrett crochet for the red sox max freed for the yankees they're not facing one another
00:55they're going uh friday saturday i believe it is so a crochet on friday freed on saturday
01:00so you'd like to think that the team with the better pitcher on that day is going to win those
01:06games that leaves two other games in the series tonight and sunday if you're the red sox you should
01:11be shooting for three out of four you make up the two games get even with the yankees and get out
01:17of there and now you're okay here we go we erased the the impact of those losses from or negated the
01:23losses from baltimore in the last marlins game we made the ground back up and now we're going to
01:27beat them to the finish line but do how do i feel about it going into the series not good
01:32they're not playing great and it looks like the yankees are coming together so if you think that
01:36a playoff berth is in the bag it might be i mean they're two games three two and a half
01:43ahead in the uh i call it three i'm sorry so they're three even ahead in the playoff berth okay
01:50so they're three games clear there they're going to be in the the playoffs after this series no
01:55matter what it really have to go south for them to i think lose that playoff berth
01:59but here are the stakes home field in that wild card round the home team hosts all three games if
02:05it goes three games so it's a three game series they're all in the higher seed building so what it
02:11is is the division winner with the worst record hosts the the last wild card team and then the top
02:19wild card team hosts the second wild card team i hope you can follow along with that if the
02:23playoffs began today which is what i'm trying to tell you you wouldn't just be on the road in the
02:28first round you'd be at the yankees yep in new york okay if you fall to the third wild card spot
02:34you would be at probably right now it looks like houston is going to be that third division winner you got
02:41it okay so given the way you play at home versus on the road you want to be at home and given how
02:48you're able to scout pitchers i think you want to be at home i think that's pretty evident uh you know
02:56evident it's a big thing so it's not just making the playoffs it's if you have a chance to do anything
03:02especially the way you play at home you want to be at home yes it's a big thing and look i you know
03:07when you have a great team and the red sox had championship caliber teams they could win on the
03:13road because they had better pitching and they could go into these places put their ace on the
03:17mound and he was good enough to win there and then you're fine you get back home they still cleaned
03:22up on teams at home though even when they didn't have home field they're not a great team anymore
03:27they home field would make a difference for them i think everybody feels that way so to get that
03:34first wild card spot is not insignificant and they've already given it up you can't lose any
03:39more ground to the yankees in this series can't do it so it's also a chance to look back at the
03:45trade deadline and see how each team handled it and alex spear wrote about this in the boston globe
03:50headline looking back as they prepare to take on the rival yankees how do the socks think they did
03:54at the trade deadline and the yankees invested far more at the trade deadline than you did and how has
04:00it worked out for each team well just scoreboard the yanks have gone eight and eight since the
04:05deadline but after an initial stumble they found their foot in winning four straight you've gone
04:11nine and eight since the deadline but enter the series having dropped three straight and eight of
04:16the last 12 right spear saying the red sox are springing leaks making it natural to wonder if they
04:23could have done more in the days leading up to july 31st oh you don't say yep thoughts murray yeah i think
04:28you can go before the trade deadline too with with raphael devers i don't care what he's doing with
04:34the giants i you i care about him in this lineup and how he was in this lineup specifically against
04:41the yankees he was a yankee killer and so their bats have kind of died out and since going nine and
04:46eight since the deadline all right they've pitched a little better and they got hot but they still miss
04:50his bat and so a caller brought this up in the midday too with with the macona mccarthy and it's like
04:55right like devers was a huge part of that series when they swept the yankees the last time they
05:00saw him if they don't hit this weekend you can say like well i mean was that the right thing to do
05:04i know he was a pain in the ass but that guy against the yankees he always showed up yeah he
05:09could hit new york he and devers was a a guy that could hit good pitching because he can hit pitches
05:14that are outside the strike zone and just quickly mike the yankees that story was written before the
05:19game last night the yankees won last night as well so they're nine and eight as well and they've won
05:23five in a row they're both nine and eight and won five in a row okay very good uh spear writes when
05:28the socks and yankees meet on thursday they may need a moment to take stock of their reconfigured
05:32rosters it's been two months since the teams met on the night following their last encounter on june
05:3715th the socks traded devers hours after he'd hit a home run for the 31st time in his career against
05:43the yankees the trade deadline brought further change with the socks landing starter dustin may and
05:48reliever steven mats the yankees went further acquiring seven players most notably high octane
05:54late inning arms david bednar camillo deval and jake bird so we would say here jimmy that it was the
06:01yankees that went super pen right super pen so it was the yankees that decided to do that and you
06:10just took back a bunch of crap try to go super pen so it was the yanks that went super pen they did
06:15the super pen guys for the yankees bednar and third baseman ryan mcmahon have come as advertised
06:22but their other acquisitions have been unavailable or disappointing bird got demoted to triple a
06:27deval has struggled and three position players have landed on the injured list
06:31uh meanwhile okay i'll just sum up mats has has done nothing in high leverage situations correct
06:41super pen he's been okay but did you realize uh i was trying to get the dustin may's uh numbers in
06:50here that may's actually when you look at what he's done front to end hasn't been too bad uh anyway
06:57how do you assess it maz since the trade deadline uh i would say slight edge new york and i would say
07:04slight edge may has been okay but i also would tell you that they've lost two out of the three games that
07:09he's pitched so he pitched well against the astros and that was not an insignificant uh game you know
07:16but the red sox also scored 14 runs they won the game 14 to 1 so now may was part of that but i i you
07:23know i'm not all that confident in dustin may i believe in the quality of the player but if we're
07:27talking about impact may's been okay max really hasn't done anything he's been kind of neutral uh the
07:33one time they put him as you said the one time they put him into a spot that was a high leverage
07:37situation he blew the game uh he was part of the blown save along with weissert in that game
07:43so uh the yankees i think did a little bit better at the deadline now have they gotten the benefits of
07:49that yet no but it looks like it's starting to come i will say quickly bednar blew a save in the
07:55ninth inning last night so they ended up winning the game in extras but he wasn't a big reason why
08:00through three starts may has given the socks the boost they sought posting a 287 era with 17
08:06strikeouts and four walks and 15 and two-thirds what's the record in his games one and two okay
08:11i wish alex had put that in there that's the thing i care about but anyway may's probably given
08:16him a little bit more than we were expecting yeah there's a there is a tangential benefit for them
08:20too because they were having so much difficulty at the end of the rotation that it was taxing the
08:25bullpen so just may going in there and giving him six innings in the last two starts helps
08:30while mats has offered solid relief aside from a homer that led to a loss in the marlins game on
08:36sunday yeah aside from that yeah let's overlook that one the bullpen has been vulnerable this
08:42month posting a 4-2-5 era 19th in the majors and a 20 strikeout rate 26 in the majors it's worth
08:49noting however that the yankees bullpen has posted a slightly higher era this month still the socks have
08:55struggled to find consistent contributors beyond a role as chapman garrett whitlock and mats in august i
08:59wouldn't put mats on that list the lack of bullpen swing and miss is a shortcoming with the trade
09:04deadline passed the socks believe they still have internal reinforcements and he quotes breslow
09:10craig breslow says i think that what you want to do is make sure that as you're staring down august
09:15and september that you've given yourself options and multiple layers of options why don't you hate the
09:19way these guys talk just every time they start talking i'm like dude are you talking baseball
09:24you want to give yourself options and multiple layers of options said breslow i think we
09:29have the depth currently in triple a that maybe we haven't had in a number of years so isn't that
09:34rich they totally cheap out at the trade deadline and now we have to hear about all the depth they
09:40have a triple a that's going to come up here and make an impact right and so them right and my next
09:45question would be if you've had that depth all along why haven't you used it yet this is a fair
09:50point maz so like all of a sudden they made all these moves here in the last couple of days
09:55right isaiah campbell hit the bricks you're out of here abraham toro now has been waived
09:59see you later he's out of here and now the passwords coming up tonight because of bray who's
10:04on the uh the injured list and who else did they bring up they brought back david hamilton yeah right
10:08right so again they got rid of toro who can't play for hamilton who can't bunt so i think that that is
10:14the that is what the the roster move is there but whatever nonetheless all of a sudden now it feels like
10:20we've got to get serious about the roster so they waited until now why didn't you do it last week
10:27you tell me what the hell was the problem with doing it last week you tell me i don't know
10:32maybe it's because core has been bitching
