00:00That don't smell like dirty clothes.
00:01What do you mean?
00:02I'm about to show you.
00:03They've been sitting in there for months and months and months and months and months.
00:07You're going to have to open that up all the way.
00:09What is that?
00:10Huh?
00:11What is that?
00:12Dirty thing?
00:12No.
00:13Open, pull it out.
00:15What the f***?
00:17Get the f*** in it!
00:19Put your hands up!
00:20What begins as a routine traffic stop takes a horrifying turn when officers detect a strange,
00:26putrid smell coming from the vehicle.
00:29The search that follows uncovers a secret so disturbing it defies belief,
00:34leaving multiple officers visibly shaken, physically ill,
00:37and utterly enraged by one of the most vile discoveries ever made.
00:42Listen, I need you to calm down.
00:43I need you to calm down.
00:44I'm sorry.
00:45No, I need you to focus.
00:46Listen, calm down.
00:47We need to verify.
00:48We don't know what this is.
00:50Oh, Jesus Christ.
00:52The following is based on official police records,
00:55and most of the footage has never been seen before until now.
00:59In Essex, Maryland, just after 11 p.m. on July 28th, 2021,
01:04an officer with the Baltimore County Police Department approaches a vehicle for a traffic stop.
01:09How you doing?
01:10I need you to.
01:11All right.
01:11You got your license and registration on you?
01:14You know why I pulled you over?
01:15I didn't pull.
01:15You know what the speed limit is?
01:17No.
01:17Okay.
01:18Speed limit is 35.
01:19Oh.
01:20And you was doing well over.
01:23Oh, I'm sorry.
01:24I swear I only thought I was doing 40.
01:26The driver, 33-year-old Nicole Michelle Johnson, hands over a state ID.
01:31Sitting beside her in the front seat is a friend who she calls Bebe.
01:35The officer heads back to his cruiser to run a registration,
01:39but the information doesn't quite check out.
01:41And it's high back vehicle requested not found or on file.
01:47Temple.
01:47So you don't have a driver license?
01:52No.
01:53Okay.
01:53And also, this vehicle is not even registered.
01:56Those tags in there are fake tags.
01:57This car has to be towed.
01:59I'm not getting my stuff out of it.
02:00Yeah, you get everything out of it, but how long did you have this car?
02:03I've heard, like, almost 30 days.
02:06As the officer returns to his cruiser to issue citations,
02:10Nicole and Bebe exit the vehicle.
02:12Nicole walks to the rear and opens the trunk,
02:14revealing several large bags tightly packed inside.
02:19Ms. Johnson, you come over here.
02:24So you got pulled over for the same stuff already.
02:27But that's why I went and I really, really thought I got good tags.
02:32You got to be careful with that stuff off the internet and all that kind of stuff like that.
02:36Stuff that don't even give a jack.
02:37Like, you literally see, like, we literally, well, not her,
02:40but me and my kids are literally living in the car, like.
02:43Ms. Johnson, I just need you to sign this.
02:44This is basically telling you that you have to go to Kelso Drive courthouse within five days
02:48to request a court date.
02:50If you don't request a court date within five days,
02:52they can issue a warrant for your arrest.
02:54This is not meant to guilt.
02:56I'm not going to be here in five days.
02:57I swear to God.
02:58Please.
02:58I can't go through any more.
03:03Then just take me home, please.
03:05I can't.
03:05I can't take you.
03:06It's in the city.
03:07I can't go down there.
03:08There you go.
03:10This is not meant to guilt or just anything like that.
03:13I'm telling you, it's cool.
03:14I won't be here tomorrow.
03:15Tonight is my last night.
03:16What am I going through?
03:17Like, I swear to God.
03:18No, I still got to do my job until I explain to you.
03:20I know, but I'm just saying.
03:21So I'm just explaining.
03:22I'm not even talking about in Baltimore.
03:23Watch tomorrow.
03:24Y'all are going to see me on the news.
03:25Y'all are going to see me make my big favor.
03:29I swear to God.
03:31The officer has no idea her bizarre comment will soon become a shocking reality.
03:36With the tow truck on its way, Nicole sits on the sidewalk and calls a friend for a ride.
03:41You want to grab a couple of your things?
03:42Yes, please.
03:43Go ahead.
03:44Do you have a guarantee to do what you got to do?
03:48I'm going to do an inventory search of your car once you finish taking out what you want to take out.
03:52What's that inventory search?
03:54So inventory search is, is when I go through your car, say like you had $15,000 in the trunk of this car right now, and you're taking a tow and it's gone.
04:01Yo, I'm in the middle of no war.
04:04And when you're taking my car, I got to take all my stuff out because, you know, I don't have anything.
04:10So if I lose this, this is all I got.
04:12Y'all keep asking me to my door.
04:15Y'all keep telling me all day.
04:17Y'all keep saying everything's going to get better.
04:20Y'all keep saying this, it can't get no words, it can't get, like, y'all keep saying find a light, find a light, find a light.
04:28Where is the light, yo?
04:29Like, where is the light?
04:30Like, where, like, where, where, where, where?
04:36You like inspirational conversations.
04:38Here we go, bro.
04:39Here we go because I can't take no more.
04:41Like, I really can't take no more.
04:43When backup arrives at the scene, the officer taps his colleague on the arm and quietly shares that something is very wrong.
04:51Come here for a sec.
04:52I'll push, I'll push, yeah, hold up for me.
04:55Eric, give me a favor.
04:57Walk that, I mean, walk through the car and just see what you smell.
05:01Not drugs or anything, but see what you smell anything out there.
05:08There's something, something dead or something.
05:10Did you move in your car?
05:13This way, I look at it.
05:16What you're hitting?
05:18No, seriously.
05:19I need to find, I need to know.
05:21I told you.
05:21What is this right here?
05:23What is this?
05:25A bunch of dirty clothes.
05:27A bunch, a bunch of dirty.
05:29That don't smell like dirty clothes.
05:31Huh?
05:31That don't smell like dirty clothes.
05:32What do you mean?
05:33I'm about to show you.
05:36I'm about to show you.
05:38I'm about to show you right now.
05:40There's a bunch of dirty blankets.
05:41I've been sitting in there for months and months and months and months and months.
05:46You're going to have to, you're going to have to, man, my mom, you're going to have to open that up all the way.
05:53I'm about to open it up all the way.
05:55Yeah, you're going to have to open it up all the way for me.
05:57There's stuff all over it and everything.
05:58Oh, it's maggie.
05:59Because there's bugs and stuff over it and everything.
06:02I know, but I don't know what it is, dog.
06:05The stench is unmistakable.
06:07But finding the source of the smell is easier said than done.
06:10As whatever is inside is buried beneath endless layers of plastic trash bags.
06:15Literally ripping me all the names so you can see all the nerdy stuff.
06:21I don't think the guilty person will be doing it like this, bro.
06:25If I take all my stuff out, where am I going to...
06:27I just need...
06:28This right here is drawing my attention to it, so I need to see it.
06:33I know.
06:35That's why I'm trying to show you.
06:36No.
06:36I'm just...
06:38I'm watching...
06:39What happened?
06:40I'm just telling them.
06:41Giving them some advice.
06:43Okay.
06:43Okay.
06:45I'm telling you, you're just going to find a bunch of dirty blankets.
06:51Yeah, but I need to know what that smell is.
06:54I am.
06:54I'm about to show you.
06:55Nicole turns to the officer for help, and he carefully begins cutting through the thick
06:59layers with a knife.
07:01You got to get all the way through to the dirty because he's closed.
07:06Why you got all these blankets?
07:08Huh?
07:08Why you got all these blankets?
07:09Because we stay in hotels, from the hotel to the court.
07:12Like, I can even get the hotel...
07:13No, no, no, no.
07:13You can finish here.
07:14I was just curious.
07:15Oh, yeah.
07:15I can even get to the hotel receipt for you.
07:17Okay.
07:18You ain't got to go through that.
07:19I was just curious.
07:21Keep finding blankets.
07:23I ain't found one blanket.
07:24Keep finding them.
07:25Oh, you can keep finding them.
07:27Why?
07:27You see them right there as soon as you open the suit?
07:29Why?
07:30Huh?
07:30Keep finding them.
07:31Why?
07:32Oh, yeah, because as soon as you open it, you will find them.
07:35Let's stand over the front of this car and make sure she don't go nowhere.
07:38After cutting through multiple layers of trash bags, officers finally uncover a black suitcase.
07:43Just open the suitcase and we can be good after that.
07:46Can you cut it one more time?
07:53And this is what smells, Rita.
07:56What is that?
08:01Huh?
08:02What is that?
08:03Dirty thing.
08:03No.
08:04Open.
08:04Pull it out.
08:05What are you calling me?
08:08Dirty thing for my husband.
08:11Pull the whole bag out.
08:12I am.
08:13My husband, do you tell me?
08:14Dirty shit.
08:15Dirty thing for my husband.
08:17I am.
08:18See?
08:19Take it out.
08:19Take the bag out.
08:20Take that bag out of there.
08:21I am.
08:22Okay.
08:23Pull that bag out.
08:31There you go.
08:32Open that bag up.
08:34Let me see close.
08:36Let me see close.
08:36Let me see close.
08:37See?

08:39All pretty close.
08:40Open it up, ma'am.
08:41I did it.
08:41I'm going the whole thing.
08:49Open that up.
08:49Open that up.
08:52What the f***?
08:54Get the f*** in.
08:55Put your hands up.
08:57Don't you f***.

09:10Put your hands behind your back.
09:12Put your hands behind your back.

09:16It's my mom.

09:33Get up.
09:34On your feet.
09:35Roll over.
09:36Sit on your butt.
09:38Stand up.
09:39Aviation on the channel.

09:41We don't need air.
09:41We got two in custody right now.
09:43But we need a secret.
09:44Please don't.
09:44No.
09:44I swear to God if you move.
09:46So help me.
09:47Please don't arrest her.
09:49Please don't arrest her.
09:51She don't have anything to do with nothing.
09:53Are you sure I don't have that?
09:53She really don't have anything to do with nothing.

09:58Yeah, everybody.
09:59I don't want to hear it.
10:00Please don't arrest her.
10:01With both women in custody, the officers struggle to process the horror they've just witnessed.
10:07No.
10:08Stay.
10:08Hey.
10:08No, no, no.
10:09Calm down.

11:09Okay?
11:12I need you to breathe, okay?
11:13I'm good.
11:14No.
11:14I'm sorry.
11:15Don't worry about it.
11:17No.
11:18I'm sorry.
11:18I just want to ask you.
11:19There's nothing for me to talk about with you.
11:21Do you understand that?
11:22I know.
11:23Do you understand that?
11:24But y'all going to want all the information in here.
11:26We'll get to that point, but right now, you need to be quiet.
11:28This is not a game.

11:38No, ma'am.
11:39No, ma'am.
11:39We're not going to take that road.
11:41We're not going to take that road.
11:42You're going to sit here and we're going to wait.
11:44Yes.
11:44We're going to get to that point.
11:46But don't you say another word.
11:48Don't you say another word.
11:50Thompson, are you okay?
11:51I'm good.
11:52Are you sure?
11:53It's not okay.
11:53I'm good.
11:54I didn't ask you to talk.
11:55No, just let me.
11:56I'm not asking you to talk to him.
11:58Can I please take this on my own?
11:59She don't have anything to do.
12:01Just stop.
12:02For your sake, stop speaking.
12:03Right.
12:04But I'm going to have to speak to y'all anyway.
12:06Okay.
12:07But I'm not asking you to speak to me now.
12:08I've told you multiple times to be quiet.
12:10I'm sorry.
12:11You ran from me.
12:12You made me chase you.
12:12I'm giving you a chance to rest and calm down.
12:15I didn't know that was in there.
12:16I'm asking you to just stop talking.
12:19That's it.
12:20Okay.
12:21The officer takes the opportunity to walk away and regain his composure.
12:25But the emotional aftershock is hard to contain.
12:32All I seek the refuge in you from the whisperings of an accursed devil who whispers into the hearts
12:38of men.
12:39Can I talk to you for a second?
12:41No.
12:42Yes.
12:43No.
12:44Yes.
12:44Please.
12:45I'm not ready.
12:47Are you okay?
12:47I'm good.
12:48I'm good.
12:48I'm scared.
12:49Excuse me.
12:49Where?
12:50Where?
12:51Stop.

12:53Go over there.
12:53Go in.
12:54Excuse me.
12:55Where?
12:56Excuse me.
12:57Ma'am.
12:58Ma'am.

13:01Please be quiet.
13:02Bruh.
13:03I'm scared to look.
13:04Please be quiet.
13:05Just turn around.
13:06So what are you taking me for?
13:09Oh no.
13:10Get her out of here.
13:10Get her out of here.
13:12Get up.
13:13Get up.
13:14No.
13:17More officers begin to arrive and can only guess at what has the other officers in such
13:22a sickened state.
13:23I'm going to say pepper spray happen.
13:25No.
13:26It's a bad baby.
13:27I'm back.
13:28Oh.
13:28What the f***?
13:30Hey.
13:30I.
13:30You get.
13:31Come back.
13:33Get the mask on, Pooh.
13:35Get her out of here.
13:37It looks like a kid that's curled up in there.
13:39I want to look, man.
13:40Just wait.
13:46Hold up a minute.
13:47Something just happened there.
13:51They're not okay.
13:52They're not okay.
13:56I wasn't okay.
13:57That's why I took off.
13:58I said to them, I dug through that stuff the whole time.
14:02As soon as I seen who you were, I took off running too.
14:06So no, they're not okay.
14:08They took their s*** out of the car.
14:10They couldn't take it out in front of the police.
14:14They're speeding around with the bodies in my car.
14:16We need to verify.
14:23We don't know what this is.
14:26Oh, my God.
14:30Oh, Jesus Christ.
14:32Oh, Jesus.
14:35Oh, my God.
14:38It's a little girl.
14:40What?
14:40Yeah, you need some water.
14:42Take a walk.
14:44Take a walk.
14:44I'm good.
14:45I'm good.
14:46Stay in there.
14:51I can't vision it.
14:53I can't vision it.
14:54What the f***?
14:56It's messing my head up.
14:57I can't vision it.
14:58After telling the tow truck driver his services will no longer be needed,
15:02officers make the difficult decision to get a closer look
15:04in order to confirm what lies beneath the maggot-covered blanket.
15:08I can lift it up.
15:09It doesn't really bother me, but it's got to be a three- or four-year-old kid.
15:12It's got to be a two-year-old kid.
15:14Let me get it.
15:15My gloves are already.
15:16The problem is the body is this soothed pin.
15:19It's in a pin position.
15:20Yes.
15:20oh my god dude that's a five that's a five hundred percent it's got girl for email clothes right

26:21idiot bro
26:26the scent of decay clings to nicole
26:28growing so strong
26:30that it becomes unbearable
26:31for others in the station
26:32one officer fills the room
26:34with an odor spray
26:35but when that fails to help
26:37he brings in an air scrubber
26:38and tries the spray a second time
26:40soon after
26:41a decision is made
26:42to transfer the two women
26:43to another facility
26:44for interviews with detectives

27:31it's gonna be war
27:32yes ma'am
27:36i hate it here
27:39back at the scene
27:41officers standing watch over the body
27:43discuss the tragic case
27:44and question the one thing weighing on everyone's mind
27:48it's pretty f***ed up about this
27:49right
27:50really everybody we saw it's pretty f***ed up right now
27:54well i mean i saw it
27:56you saw it
27:57i saw it
27:58i ain't trying to look
28:00but it's
28:01not the way he's got all these grown men all f***ed up
28:03no i mean well i was f***ed up before i got this job but
28:07i didn't mean like that
28:09no
28:09no i know i know
28:11i'm just saying it's it's weird that
28:13i could understand if this child this child was younger
28:15like baby sage
28:18but it's not
28:19so it's um
28:20i'm like
28:21it's kind of dumbfounded
28:22like like what the hell
28:23like i'd love to just know the reasoning
28:25same
28:26i'm so f***ing curious
28:27the whole story
28:29yeah
28:30like what
28:30like what
28:32what
28:34how did this even
28:35come to be
28:35nicole enters the interrogation room with much to explain
28:40she tells detectives she was in essex to meet a man for prostitution
28:44while bb waited in the car
28:46she claimed she's been aware of the foul smell
28:49but assumed it was a dead rat
28:51me and my homegirl was doing so much to try to get the smell get the smell get the smell
28:56but we never noticed it was coming from the back because we don't sit in the back
28:59how'd you try to get rid of the smell
29:00we always thought it was coming through the front of the car so we got it power washed
29:05you power washed the car
29:08try to get the smell away
29:09the engine
29:10you starting to understand why this sounds a little ridiculous
29:18after speaking with detectives investigators note it was clear that bb was mentally challenged
29:24and had no knowledge of the incident
29:26they contact her mother and arrange for her to be taken home
29:30as for nicole her vague story isn't enough to satisfy investigators
29:34given the second horrifying discovery made at the crime scene
29:38i really i want you to help me out to find out how these children ended up like this
29:45okay okay
29:47children both
29:49the discovery of a second child came only after homicide detectives began sorting through nicole's
30:03belongings though the signs had been present from the very start
30:07me and my kids were literally living in the car like
30:09you stayed around with the bodies in my car
30:12it was okay
30:13then the whole time i hit him
30:18in a black and yellow plastic bin buried beneath the bags and the suitcase containing the little girl
30:24were the aged remains of a small boy
30:27the child's body had been wrapped in blankets and placed in multiple layers of trash bags
30:32similar to the girl
30:33their relation to nicole comes as even more of a shock
30:37do you recognize this person at all
30:39who's that
30:42who is that
30:45their mother
30:45that's their mother
30:48who are they
30:54because that's when i hit them
30:58if you look at them when i hit them
31:00so that's who
31:02and that's who
31:04remember
31:04okay
31:05when you look at them when she hit them
31:07and when i hit them
31:08you probably got this picture off her page
31:10but it definitely came from mine
31:12because if you look at them when she hit them
31:14they were very not taken care of
31:17if you look at them when i hit them
31:19they were very well taken care of
31:21seven-year-old joshlyn marie james johnson
31:24and five-year-old larry darnell o'neal
31:27were each left in nicole's care
31:29two years ago by her sister deshell
31:31who claimed she was unable to care for them at the time
31:34investigators also learned deshell has an active case
31:37with the baltimore city department of social services
31:40for an eight-month-old infant
31:41who was temporarily taken into their care
31:44given the current investigation
31:46she didn't take care of kids
31:48she didn't do to them what happened to them
31:52yeah but i didn't
31:54okay so she's a better person for leaving
31:57and any kind of predicament
31:59like she knew the predicament wasn't okay
32:02she knew the predicament was f***ed up
32:06she knew
32:08like she left her kids literally
32:10with me selling my a**
32:12she left her kids in the room
32:16she thought you were going to take care of them
32:19i never told her i was going to
32:21i never asked her to
32:23hey come on bro
32:25i used to have to yell at the mother
32:27about washing them
32:29i used to have to yell at the mother
32:31about feeding them
32:33like i used to have to yell at her about everything
32:36despite portraying herself as the better caregiver
32:39nicole couldn't even spell the young girl's name
32:41she also couldn't recall either child's birthday
32:44whatever belief remained
32:46that she'd shown love or responsibility
32:48would soon be shattered
32:49by the grim truths surrounding their deaths
32:52she lowers herself to the floor
32:54as the interview continues
32:56well let me ask you
32:57let me tell you this right
32:58we spoke to your sister
33:00and a bunch of your family members right
33:02mhm
33:02i don't know that everything that you're saying
33:05is making sense
33:05what do you mean
33:06well i'm just saying
33:08what do you mean
33:09what did y'all speak about
33:10i spoke about her leaving our children
33:13huh
33:13y'all spoke about her leaving our children
33:15well we spoke about a lot of stuff
33:17and of course it's all going to be against me huh
33:23oh i mean i don't know
33:25even my mom
33:26i'm here we met your mom
33:28he tells nicole he won't discuss his conversations with her family
33:32then steps out to check on her paperwork
33:34leaving her alone to imagine what they may have shared behind her back
33:38i'm not going to tell you what they say
33:40what they say
33:41what they say
33:44what they say
33:46i done bust my
33:47for all of my life
33:49my mother
33:50my mother
33:51lady you had me out here selling my
33:54you told me not to give that girl her kids
33:59i would have gave them back
34:01i said this weekend when i'm coming back i'm giving her her kids
34:04you told me not to
34:06they about to put me under the gym
34:09they so selfish and so wrong
34:12there's a group of people here
34:18yeah all family
34:19just people meet back
34:20ain't sure where they been at when i've been growing up
34:23i guess i ran away with something
34:25like watch
34:26i already know that's what they said
34:27now i'm not talking anymore
34:29now since i'm a liar
34:32and since i'm a this
34:33and since i'm a that
34:35and since i'm a this
34:36i'm not saying anything else
34:37and come on bro
34:39all the kids that i've been around in all my life
34:42i'ma wait until my niece and nephew to kill one
34:44i've been raising kids all my life so much
34:49they thought they were actually mine
34:51i'ma wait until my niece and nephew to kill some
34:54while nicole earlier stated she was living in her car
34:57investigators located a hotel where she'd recently been staying
35:01in the room they find two stuffed animals
35:04as well as two rose bears
35:05one blue and one pink
35:08with ribbons around their necks that read
35:10always and forever
35:11with the exception of the stuffed animals
35:32there are no children's clothing
35:33belongings or items to indicate any children had been present
35:37this along with their advanced state of decay
35:40leaves many questions as to how long the children had been in the trunk of the car
35:44and what led to their deaths
35:46can i talk
35:47can i talk through like
35:49i i need my mother to be a part of this conversation
35:53for what
35:55because she's a lot of reason for the conversation
35:57all right but you're an adult what's going on
36:00huh
36:00no like i want to talk
36:03but i want to talk to her
36:04like i want to tell her
36:06like i want to talk to her
36:08did she cause this
36:09huh
36:10did she cause this
36:11i want to talk to her
36:13and everything will come out
36:14and i just need to talk to her
36:16the detective tells nicole they won't allow her to speak with her mother just yet
36:20and reminds her that it's important to tell her story to investigators first
36:24and they came to me and i was doing so good with them
36:27and you didn't want to give them back
36:29nobody even wanted them back until maybe three months ago
36:33is that when someone reached out to you
36:36who reached out to you
36:37huh
36:38your sister
36:39yes
36:39okay
36:40well when she reached out to me she barely didn't even care
36:43and then we were supposed to arrange for her to get them back
36:46and she
36:47hey maybe next weekend like
36:50she didn't even care they were forcing her
36:53they were forcing her to even say anything
36:56text messages obtained from nicole's phones reveal multiple conversations with her sister
37:01to shell
37:01who sent nicole money and checked in on the children frequently
37:05she asked several times to see them eager for them to meet their new sibling
37:09however to shell claims nicole blocked her from seeing them
37:13now for the first time nicole begins to explain the reason why
37:18beginning with what happened to her niece joshlyn
37:21it was really an accident
37:22okay what happened
37:24i gave her a beating
37:28i can't hear you what
37:30i gave her a beating
37:31and then the next thing i know she just wasn't saying anything or nothing or nothing or nothing or nothing like
37:38okay
37:43so you gave her a beating
37:45and then she was not responsive anymore
37:48like it was mistakes i got scared them children so good like it was a mistake like i just was trying to dissipate like

38:09stealing something or going in the refrigerator or doing something or something and she did it again and she did it again and she did it again and then the last time it was just like
38:19and then i was probably more frustrated than i should have been with life period with everything with why these they leave me with the kids why nobody's helping me why nobody's calling me where is their mom where is my family like what like i
38:34and then what happened
38:39i told you peter
38:42how
38:43how
38:44with what
38:45i don't even think it was anything i think i just used my hands
38:50investigators interviewed a resident at one of the hotels nicole frequented
38:53who reported that nicole often used harsh language and regularly cursed at the children
38:58particularly the girl
39:00another witness recalled hearing nicole abusing joshlyn through the thin walls and at times
39:06hearing the child yelling for her to stop
39:08you were upset because she was taking things like from the refrigerator and stuff
39:12she was doing all kinds of stuff
39:14okay
39:14like she was taking stuff like she was getting the boy in trouble
39:17like she was just doing all kinds of stuff
39:18and you disciplined her
39:19yes
39:20okay
39:21and it went too far
39:23okay
39:23how many times do you think you might hit her
39:25i don't know
39:28but i know she fell
39:30fell on what
39:31on the floor
39:32was she standing on something
39:34or
39:35now was she
39:36she was just standing upstream
39:37okay
39:38and where did you hit her
39:40i just
39:42started doing it
39:44okay
39:45like punching her in the head
39:47no
39:47no
39:48no
39:49where
39:49i think
39:51i think i maybe slapped her in the face but i didn't punch her in the head like it was more like me hitting on our body until she fell
39:59how did she fall backwards forward sideways on her head
40:03i know she hit her head but i can't remember exactly how it was that she fell
40:07she hit her head
40:09okay
40:10do you remember where on the head
40:12no
40:13did she hit her head on something other than the floor
40:16no but the floor was extremely hard
40:19the floor was extremely hard
40:21and i was so scared
40:22and i was so scared like i was so scared
40:28okay what did you when she went to the floor was she crying or was she quiet
40:33she was quiet
40:34quiet
40:35and did you what did you do after that
40:38i tried
40:40i think i just tried to bump her chest
40:42like i was popping on her chest really really hard like
40:46i got to look baby she was like
40:48i don't know
40:49like i'm just trying
40:50like i was just popping on her chest
40:52i was just trying to get her back
40:55like i just
40:55okay
40:56and then what did you do next
41:00i laid in the bed with her
41:02you laid her in the bed and laid next to her
41:04where was the boy at this time
41:06sleeping on the bed
41:07okay
41:08where
41:11i stayed in that room with her
41:14when do you think that was
41:15i told you maybe last year
41:18and then
41:19what did you do with her body after that
41:22i just put it in a suitcase and i kept her
41:25joshlyn's death is believed to have occurred around may of 2020
41:29approximately 14 months before the traffic stop
41:32despite this nicole continued texting to shell as though joshlyn was still alive
41:37in april of 2021 to shell even thank nicole writing
41:41thank you for taking care of them so well
41:44nicole admits she continued traveling from hotel to hotel
41:48carrying the young girl in the suitcase
41:50eventually storing her in the trunk of the car
41:53joshlyn's body arrived at the medical examiner's office
41:56still wrapped in a comforter that contained a cigarette butt
41:59numerous bruises were found on her body
42:02but an exact cause of death could not be determined
42:05due to the advanced stage of decomposition
42:07still investigators ruled her death a homicide
42:10citing evidence of physical abuse and neglect
42:13with joshlyn's fate uncovered
42:15investigators turned to what happened to her nephew
42:18five-year-old larry
42:19whom nicole refers to by the name stink
42:22so help me explain the other child what happened
42:26so he was still with you
42:30when the uh the girl's now in the suitcase
42:33in the car
42:35he didn't even want to go anywhere
42:37i was like you get that's why they said they talk to my family
42:40my family don't know me
42:41like you can ask all my friends
42:44like as much as i tried to push him off
42:46or i wanted to drive him off
42:47and i knew i need to drive him off
42:49he just wanted to be me
42:51so what led to the next incident with the other child
42:56i don't know like i honestly don't know
42:59because it was like one minute we was playing
43:01and then one minute it was just like
43:04it was like we were playing like we was playing
43:06i think i think something hit him in the leg
43:09yeah but that wouldn't cause him to die
43:13hmm
43:14why would he die though
43:15i thought it was like a main artery or something
43:17okay well explain that to me
43:19yeah what happened
43:21i don't know but then i know i saw him bleeding
43:25in his leg
43:27where at on his leg
43:28i don't mean to
43:31let me break it somewhere
43:32right inside of his left thigh
43:35yeah but i did like
43:36was the blood dripping was it
43:39only way that i noticed it
43:42and honestly i didn't even notice it
43:47until i started trying to stink
43:49stink stink stink
43:51and then when i started looking at his clothes
43:54it was bloody
43:55the detective offers nicole a cigarette
43:57and allows her to smoke in the interrogation room
43:59as she continues her story
44:01what caused the boy's injury with the blood
44:04in his thigh
44:05i can't remember what exactly he was playing with
44:10and i think i yelled
44:11i think i swung on him for playing with it
44:14but i can't remember what
44:16is there a chance you hit him afterwards
44:18i didn't see the thing
44:22i didn't i talked about it
44:23but you said he swung on
44:24yeah because he was playing with something
44:26i didn't see the thing that
44:27i told you i didn't see the thing that was in his leg
44:29until it was like
44:30it was just like
44:32and what was it
44:33i don't i never even looked at him
44:35i never even took his pants off
44:36i just seen the blood
44:37and i yelled at him like
44:38well i didn't yell at him when i seen the blood
44:40i yelled at him like
44:41i don't even remember what it was
44:43larry's body arrived at the medical examiner's office
44:46still wearing paw patrol pajamas
44:48his body was also covered in bruises
44:51and while superficial wounds were found on his legs
44:54they showed no signs of deep bleeding
44:56however internal bleeding was noted around both his knee and elbow
45:00suggesting trauma before death
45:02like his sister
45:04larry's advanced state of decomposition
45:06made it impossible to determine an exact cause of death
45:09although she claims not to know exactly what caused his injury
45:13she clearly remembers what happened next
45:16he was just like getting drowsy
45:17like just getting drowsy
45:19the last thing he said
45:21the last thing he said
45:27he said
45:29can you lay me down
45:31what's that
45:32he said can i lay him down
45:34can you lay him down
45:35yes cause he was sitting up in the chair
45:37and he said
45:38can you lay me down
45:40and i say yeah honey
45:42and i went
45:45to smoke
45:46and i turned back around
45:47and it was like
45:48stay
45:48stay
45:49stay
45:50stay
45:51and he would not answer me
45:53where did you lay him down at
45:59on the back seat of the car
46:01okay
46:01and this was about two months ago
46:05or is it more
46:08this month is what
46:09well it's the very end of july
46:12i think may
46:17okay
46:18about two months ago
46:20yes
46:21i've been sitting there for months and months and months and months and months
46:25in june of 2021
46:27nicole sent a video to her friend
46:28showing the black and yellow tote in the back of her car
46:31and spoke about getting odor absorber
46:33according to nicole the child would have already been deceased at this time
46:38and would soon join his sister in the trunk of the car
46:41investigators later discovered that neither child had ever seen a doctor in maryland
46:45had never been enrolled in school
46:47and neither had been reported missing
46:49one additional detail raised further concern
46:53both children appeared unusually small for their ages
46:57it's got to be a three or four year old kid
46:59me and my
47:00me and me and my
47:01the girl was
47:02according to your timeline
47:04about six years old when this happened
47:06yes
47:07and
47:09she only weighed 18 pounds
47:11you think that's after all it is because they were not tiny
47:14like you see them in the pictures
47:16the pictures that y'all printed out are the pictures that i took
47:18the boy was only 21 pounds
47:21i don't see how
47:23because they ate all the time
47:24they ate all the time
47:26they ate all the time
47:27i mean everything
47:28so maybe
47:29i mean is that
47:31maybe a contributing factor here
47:33no i didn't
47:34if some kind of trauma happened
47:35would it be made worse
47:37yeah i didn't starve them though
47:39i didn't starve them
47:41according to doctors however
47:43it would have taken several months of malnourishment
47:45for the children to attain their low weights
47:47the investigation concluded that both minor children lost their lives
47:51due to the neglect and abuse inflicted on them
47:54by their aunt nicole
47:55i just can't believe they came up here
47:57and made it seem like i was some type of bad person
48:00like i was some type of troubled person
48:04like yes
48:05i've been depressed all my life
48:07because i wanted a mama
48:09but i can't believe that she really came up here
48:13and made it seem like i was a bad person
48:16one month after her arrest
48:18nicole's mother emailed baltimore public officials
48:20pleading with them to intervene and protect her remaining grandchild
48:24the email additionally criticized social workers and a shell
48:27for not safeguarding the children
48:29multiple news outlets reported that the shell created a gofundme campaign
48:34to raise funds for their burial
48:35and rumors later circulated
48:37that she may have launched as many as four separate fundraisers
48:40though all have since been deleted
48:42following her arrest
48:4433 year old nicole michelle johnson was held without bond
48:47and later indicted on 14 criminal counts
