00:00This is Natalie and John Shirella, the parents of Mackenzie Shirella.
00:11Just hours earlier, they were informed their daughter was involved in a devastating car accident
00:16and that she was transported by helicopter to the nearest hospital.
00:21However, what they're about to hear from this officer would change the course of their and
00:25mackenzie's life forever.
00:30You want to sit down?
00:31Oh my god.
00:32How do you see this?
00:37There's a progress in Alameda, a car into a building, two are deceased in the vehicle,
00:41daughter's driving.
00:42Who died?
00:46Mackenzie's boyfriend, Dom Russo, as well as their friend Davion, were pronounced dead
00:51after the crash, making Mackenzie the suspect of a potential double murder.
00:57However, police had their doubts.
01:00Most assumed that this was simply the result of an innocent mistake on Mackenzie's behalf.
01:05But as the investigation would progress, dark and disturbing secrets would reveal
01:10this was clearly much more than just an accident.
01:14Dom, if you do not open, like you think I'm joking.
01:18What do you mean?
01:18You know exactly what I mean.
01:20You're going to come open this door right now or there's going to be a serious problem.
01:3517-year-old Mackenzie Sharilla, her 20-year-old boyfriend Dominic,
01:39and their friend Davion are on their way to a high school party.
01:43With Mackenzie's 18th birthday in just two days, the group has decided to go out and celebrate.
01:49But what seems like a normal night out will, in a few hours, turn into one of Ohio's most
01:54disturbing mysteries.
01:57At around 2 a.m., Mackenzie and Dominic are seen smoking at the party.
02:01And at one point, Mackenzie reportedly offers the host of the party psychedelic mushrooms.
02:06This was unlike Mackenzie, as her friends had never seen her use a substance before,
02:11let alone pass them around.
02:13At 3.30 a.m., the group leaves the party and drives to another friend's place across town.
02:19There, they hang out for a little over an hour watching South Park.
02:23By 5 a.m., Mackenzie decided it was time to go home.
02:26Strangely, she asked to drive instead of Dominic.
02:31This was unusual, but Dominic agreed.
02:34Additionally, when Davion asked for a ride, Mackenzie refused to let him in the car.
02:39After an argument, Dominic convinced her to take Davion home.
02:42All three of them would get in the car, sealing their own fate.
02:47At the intersection between Pearl and Progress Drive, CCTV spots the car making a turn off course
02:53from Davion's house.
02:55Instead of driving along Pearl Drive, the car turns onto Progress Drive.
03:00A road that ends abruptly with a brick wall.
03:04CCTV would spot the car rapidly start accelerating, going from a calm 30 to over 90 mph.
03:11In the very last seconds, an intense turn would take place, leading the car to narrowly
03:16avoid slamming into a tree.
03:18But it would be too late, and the car would speed into the brick wall.
03:25The crashed car would remain undiscovered for 45 minutes.
03:30Until 6.15 a.m., when a passerby on a motorcycle would discover the destroyed vehicle.
03:36About 10 minutes later, law enforcement would arrive, and through their body cams,
03:40we can witness the horrific discovery they would make.
03:43No one's free of this.
03:55Bust that window out.
03:56All right.
03:57Oh my god.
04:01Look in here, my boy!
04:02Who's in here?
04:03Driver's car.
04:04I'm in here.
04:05Baby driver's car.
04:06Oh man, watch out.
04:07Baby driver's car.
04:12Hey!
04:13This is bad, guys.
04:14She's alive.
04:16We gotta get her out.
04:16Here, meet.
04:17All right.
04:18Reach up and unlock this board.
04:19Let me see her knife.
04:20Let's cut this thing out.
04:21I don't feel anything.
04:37I don't feel a pulse.
04:38She's breathing.
04:39I saw her stomach.
04:40Her stomach's cold.
04:40Oh yeah.
04:41Yeah.
04:41We got two that are gone.
04:44Yeah.
04:45Okay.
04:47Jesus Christ.
04:51That's the worst I've ever seen.
04:53How old is Dominic Caruso?
04:5617?
04:5819?
05:00Rest in peace, buddy.
05:02Inside the car, officers quickly confirmed two victims as deceased.
05:0620-year-old Dominic in the front passenger seat and 19-year-old Davion in the back.
05:11But one person has survived.
05:12The driver, Mackenzie Shirella.
05:15As medics and firefighters rush to tend to the victims, investigators begin trying to
05:20understand how such a devastating crash could have happened.
05:23That's when they start uncovering alarming details.
05:26It looks like they even went off the road up there.
05:28They did, though.
05:29But I mean, they were, I mean, if you're hitting a building that hard.
05:32I just can't believe all the people that work up here, that are up here all night long.
05:36No one heard.
05:37They're in factory type settings.
05:40Yeah, well.
05:40And it's dark over there.
05:42Oh.
05:42That's insane, though.
05:44Once they get her out, I'll go over to this building, because I think there's a camera
05:47on the front of that building.
05:49I don't know if it's working, but I can always ask.
05:52As authorities work to save Mackenzie, the man who initially called 9-1-1 to report the
05:57incident arrives on the scene to give his side of the story.
06:00I appreciate you giving us a call.
06:02Yeah, someone in it, obviously?
06:03Uh, yeah.
06:04Yeah.
06:05All right.
06:05Yeah.
06:05So.
06:06That's a bummer.
06:07I didn't want to get stuck, and I'm like, I ain't fucking working.
06:09I don't know what's going on.
06:10Right.
06:11No, I appreciate you giving us a call.
06:13Absolutely appreciate it.
06:14They must have, they fucking were hitting it, man.
06:16Yeah.
06:16I mean, obviously.
06:17Because I saw that front end.
06:19They definitely hit it hard, so.
06:20Fucking destroyed.
06:22Right.
06:22All right.
06:23Well, what a way to start your Sunday.
06:24I guess better than theirs, huh?
06:25Right.
06:26I appreciate the call, sir.
06:29Officers would file the crash as an accident, stating that the driver appeared to have attempted
06:34to steer off course, but was unable to regain control.
06:37Mackenzie was diagnosed with a condition known as POTS, which can cause dizziness and fainting,
06:43something officers believed may have contributed to the crash.
06:47The presumption was that a combination of Mackenzie's medical condition and drug use had likely led to
06:52the tragic crash. However, one detail worried officers. There were no signs of breaking
06:58anywhere, and officers would soon begin to discover why.
07:02I've personally been told that she did voodoo on him.
07:05She was scared that she was in a crash the day before the actual crash.
07:09I feel like that's what she was trying to do, was crush the car into the wall.
07:12As police continue gathering evidence from the crash site,
07:16one officer heads to the hospital to speak with Mackenzie's parents.
07:19At this point, all they know is that their daughter was in a serious accident.
07:26Oh god, help me. Babe, what did they tell you?
07:30Nothing. Okay, she was life-flighted here.
07:32Yeah, I wouldn't know that.
07:34Okay, no. You want to sit down.
07:37Oh my god. Oh dear.
07:43Progress in Alameda. Car into a building.
07:45Two are deceased in the vehicle. Daughter's driving.
07:48Who died?
07:50I don't know the other, but there's one that we don't know.
07:52His name's Jacob. Does anyone know Jacob?
07:54Dom?
07:55No. Scott, let him talk.
07:56Guys, I know. We've been dealing with this.
08:01Your daughter's okay. She's talking to us. I talk to her, okay? Your daughter's alive, okay?
08:07Your daughter's alive. She was driving. Okay?
08:11Oh my god. Who's that? Jacob and who?
08:15What's the name you said?
08:16Dom.
08:18Might be.
08:18Stop. Oh my god.
08:20Stop.
08:20Oh my god.
08:21What's his relation to you?
08:22His boyfriend.
08:23Yeah, then Dom was in the car.
08:24Stop.
08:25Oh my god.
08:25What?
08:27Are you kidding me?
08:29It's right now. It's an ongoing investigation. Speed is definitely a factor.
08:33It's over drugs.
08:36Dom is dead.
08:37Dom is dead. Is that what you're saying to me?
08:39Look at me. It's not even done. It's dead.
08:42There's no way to wait for me to say anything right now, man.
08:44This is a serious situation.
08:47Dom was curing.
08:48I was just saying Dom. Maybe it's a different Dom. It could be a different Dom.
08:52What's that?
08:54Does she know about their 30?
08:55No. Not at all.
08:57We're going to keep it that way for her.
08:59Okay? She's getting worked on now, okay?
09:01Full transparency here. There's drugs in the car.
09:03She had a bag of mushrooms on her and a scale.
09:06Full transparency, guys. I'm sorry. I'm ripping the bandaid off.
09:09Okay? Drugs in the car.
09:10So she was away, but not away?
09:13So she was like...
09:14In and out of consciousness.
09:18She could be fully extracted from the vehicle.
09:20I have D.
09:24I know she has a severe leg injury.
09:27Like I said, she was speaking, and she had her seatbelt on.
09:32Mackenzie was the only one in the car wearing a seatbelt,
09:35which was why she was the sole survivor.
09:37If her intention had been suicide, it's unlikely she would have taken that precaution.
09:42This detail would later become important to the investigation.
09:46Yeah, that probably saved her life.
09:47100% saved her life.
09:49Oh my god!
09:52I don't believe the others did.
09:53Mackenzie's parents would take the news relatively well,
09:57relieved their daughter had survived.
09:59But officers now faced a much harder task, telling Dominic's parents.
10:05Remember, at this point, they didn't even know their son had been in an accident,
10:09let alone that he had passed away.
10:18Hi, Christine.
10:20Hey, can I talk to you real quick?
10:21Yeah.
10:22Yeah, um...
10:25There was an incident that we believe Dominic may be involved.
10:28What?
10:31Both Davion and Dominic are deceased.
10:33Oh my god!
10:34Yeah.
10:34Oh my god!
10:35Oh my god!
10:37Sit down, sit down, sit down.
10:37Oh my god!
10:38Sit down, sit down, sit down!
10:39Sit down, sit down, sit down.
10:39Sit down, sit down.
10:39Sit down, sit down!
10:40Sit down, sit down, sit down!
10:42Sit down, sit down!
10:43Oh my god!
10:43Should I take a seat?
10:45So, um...
10:45What time is happened at that?
10:48No, we don't.
10:49Right now, what we do know 100% is somebody called it in.
10:52somebody passing by at around 6 15 6 30. yeah so so what it what it appears that happened is
11:02they were going westbound on progress from pearl road they went right here in strongsville yeah in
11:06strongsville that business that's right at the on alameda right where progress ends that's dead
11:12ends right there they hit that building they hit the sign out front and then they hit the building
11:19but they fall asleep at the wheel or something i don't know we don't know that we don't know that
11:24um so two kids are dead my son's dad another kid's dad and the girl's in the hospital she's in surgery
11:30right now oh my god huh chris i mean another family member or a friend or anybody that you might want
11:36us to call on your behalf no um this is a fucking nightmare if somebody called in at 6 30 in the
11:44morning between 6 15 6 30. yeah came upon and passing it by yeah oh my gosh
11:56this is from the normal she was in her car it was in mackenzie's car yeah
12:04yeah oh my gosh is she naked you guys don't know we right now we don't know she's she's in surgery
12:11right now so we don't know what a fucking nightmare three weeks would pass time that mackenzie would
12:20spend in the hospital recovering her condition would improve significantly eventually allowing
12:26her to leave and return to her normal life the community mourned the tragic loss of dominic and
12:31davion and expressed sympathy for mackenzie who had just gone through the trauma of losing both her
12:37boyfriend and a close friend but soon strange things about mackenzie would start to surface
12:45in the weeks that followed it seems mackenzie thought everyone concluded the crash as a tragic
12:50accident and nothing further mackenzie would never attend dominic or davion's funerals on social media she
12:58would brag about her drug use claiming she could quote do more drugs than anyone and still live and then
13:07on october 31st 2022 mackenzie would go to her first party since the crash and her costume for
13:14the night would be a detailed corpse with fake blood smeared across her mouth mackenzie's parents
13:20even went public to defend her outfit saying she quote deserved to have some fun after the accident
13:27there also appeared to be a mysterious source of income mackenzie was spending thousands of
13:32undocumented dollars on designer clothing and she wasn't hiding it either openly bragging about it
13:38online but lucky for mackenzie this strange behavior still wasn't enough for police to launch a full
13:44investigation however that would all change when dominic's family came to the police with a video
13:50taken from dominic's phone a clip recorded just 10 days before the crash one that would change
13:57everything but before we get to that i want to tell you about the best earbuds i've ever used if
14:02you're like me then you love listening to true crime podcasts maybe at work at a cafe or on the train
14:09i listen to them all the time when i'm traveling but there's one problem with that the noise normal
14:15earbuds just don't work no matter how much i turn them up that's when i did some research and discovered
14:20raycon the sponsor of today's video and their new raycon everyday earbuds classic but this time
14:26they're packing in active noise cancellation the active noise cancellation feature is incredible it
14:31blocks out all the distractions so that i can make sure i'm not missing anything important their audio
14:36quality rivals all the big audio brands you know and love and at half the price they have a playtime
14:42of eight hours of straight listening and if you run out of juice you can recharge an hour and a half
14:47of listening in only 10 minutes they also have protective covers allowing you to customize their look
14:52just how you want it i went with this cool blue galaxy case go to buyraycon.com doctor insanity to
14:58get 20 off fan favorite everyday earbuds classic the link is in the description below thanks again
15:04to raycon for sponsoring now let's get back to what the investigators uncovered at this point officers
15:12already had a growing list of suspicions about mckenzie but it would be one video submitted by dominic's
15:17parents and filmed by dominic himself just 10 days before the crash that would turn the entire case
15:24on its head this was a short snippet from a 15-minute video where mckenzie clearly and continuously
15:41threatens dominic but this wasn't all dominic's family would show even more disturbing material
15:47including text messages confirming she had threatened to kill dominic this was enough for
15:55officers to reopen the case now investigating it as a planned double homicide at this point this is a
16:03homicide investigation and so we are trying to show that she intentionally drove the car into the wall
16:11shortly after the investigation began police would begin interviewing several of mckenzie
16:16shirella's friends family members and individuals from the community this would prove to be very
16:22insightful officers would first bring tyler mckenzie's former boyfriend in unfortunately his accounts
16:30would only serve to deepen their concerns we understand you're not under arrest yeah you walk out anytime
16:37you want we have approximately 10 questions that we wanted to ask you how long were you guys in a
16:43relationship well we were we were all friends in a friend group at first i uh i ended up dating
16:49her for a little bit like probably uh over the summer i was only dating her for probably like a month and
16:56a half or like two months and then um me and dom she was like she was cheating on us basically but
17:05it wasn't like anything official so it wasn't a hard feeling to like with whatever happened i just kind of
17:09it was like after me and dom found out about that we didn't have no problems with each other and
17:15nothing but like they kept they were on and off and i kept on talking to her still while they were on
17:20and off because we were all still in the friend group and stuff so and then uh we kind of just like
17:26stopped being intimate you know what i'm saying we're just friends so describe the relationship what
17:33what was it what was she like as your girlfriend um like we have much with her relationship wise
17:39because we didn't date that long but like friend wise like like she was crazy like she like mentally
17:45just not all there i mean yeah i thought i don't think she's just mentally all there like i personally
17:49feel like she was trying to and that crash and she uh failed on doing so why did dom put up with this
17:56do you know um i've personally been told that she did voodoo on him she has told people that she's
18:02put a spell on him so that he couldn't break up with her that she had like grabbed a piece of his
18:07hair and that she had a doll in her room for dom and that she literally put a spell on him what she
18:13would tell everyone like she truly believed in that kind of stuff and she also uses the pendulum i know
18:20to to try to get answers to she tries to use it now to talk to don do you think mackenzie has it in
18:27her to drive a car into a wall i mean if you're i feel like i speculate that she did it on purpose
18:34i feel like if she thinks that she can just drive the car into the wall and not feel nothing you know
18:38like i feel like the only reason she survived is because of how small she is like i feel like she got
18:45insanely lucky but at the same time not lucky that i survived that because like she killed two people
18:51that was what she was trying to do but it's like i i kind of feel i feel like that's what she was
18:56trying to do was crush the car into the wall by now a far darker picture of mackenzie's actions
19:03was beginning to take place this is when two friends who had attended the party would come forward to
19:08police claiming they had evidence that in their view proved the crash was no accident at all
19:14i just want to show you oh no explain so this is when they were going down progress drive
19:19and then you know how there was like um tire tracks before it like on that side grass so that's the sign
19:27that's when it hits the sign and then that's where she curved exactly right on gotcha missed those two
19:33rocks and went right into the sign the side of it she went right into that wall right noah so you can
19:39see like the heartbreaking was right at the wall and then her high speed was after the heartbreaking
19:46right yeah 90 miles per hour it looks like the person in the front seat tried to turn the wheel
19:52because of the fact they were going to go straight into a wall and it doesn't say she heart broke once
19:57it was 90 miles per hour down that whole road and i also think because of kenzie's and dominic's history
20:03that they were fighting i think davion went on his phone to distract himself from the fighting although
20:08they were on drugs they can also still be fighting with being on drugs while the statements were deeply
20:14concerning investigators still didn't have enough concrete evidence to determine mckenzie's intent
20:20without a documented pattern of behavior it was still possible the crash had been a drug-induced
20:26accident but that changed during an interview with dominic's brother who provided detectives with
20:32crucial information about dominic and mckenzie's turbulent relationship the following video includes
20:38talk of self-harm viewer discretion is advised you mentioned that anytime dom would kind of want to break
20:45up with her she'd kind of go crazy describe crazy like what kind of crazy like there is times where
20:51she called dom and said if you break up with me i'm going to word for word there was an instance
20:59literally a couple days before the crash that she was hitting him on the highway while driving and he
21:04had to pull his car over on the side of the highway not a very safe parking spot either and have somebody
21:09else come pick them up and drive the car home because he was scared that she was going to make him crash
21:14and that was just prior to the day before the actual crash apparently just days before the crash mckenzie
21:20had threatened dominic's life saying she would crash the car they were in dominic's brother
21:26continued the interview by giving officers a compelling motive for why the crash may have been
21:31intentional if you're going 94 miles an hour you don't have a very fast car to begin with you were
21:36stomping that gas pretty much the whole entire time there's no brake marks on the street at all even
21:40before the hit you would think that some type of instinct would kick in slam on the brakes but to
21:46my knowledge she went straight into it off of what i know and off my assumptions dom tried to break up
21:52with her multiple times even in july i kept not like working out whatever they kept making back up
21:58kenzie's known to be the kind of person that she's like she's let us know she will never let go of dom
22:04and if she has to let go of dom she will not go on living herself she's pretty much let that be known
22:09mckenzie's actions after the crash were also of concern to police on august 6th only a week after
22:16the incident police would be called to mckenzie's house by her father there he would make concerning
22:22statements while there is no footage of the incident the officer that was called out would
22:27retell the strange incident in an interview serge i want to ask you first about august 6 if you recall
22:33that's the day you guys were dispatched to mckenzie sharilla room can you tell me about that day so
22:39we were dispatched up to the room for a disturbance once we arrived upon the room she was upset with
22:45her dad we asked the dad to step out and like we're trying to calm him down calm him down and he's like
22:50you know you guys probably know who i am at one point in the conversation he's like i feel like my
22:54daughter needs a psych evaluation and he's like you know because like you know she's not you know thinking
23:00clearly and word for word what he said like i i don't recall every word that he said he was pretty
23:06hysterical he was pretty upset she was upset with her dad because like she wanted the lady to go to
23:12the funerals during this interaction it became clear that mckenzie was deeply upset with her father
23:18despite creating a shrine for dominic regularly posting on his facebook memorial page and wearing
23:24his clothes her father hadn't allowed her to attend dominic's funeral it appeared that mckenzie was
23:30truly mourning his death but around this time police managed to gain access to her phone what they
23:36uncovered didn't just explain her mysterious source of income it also hinted at something far more
23:42disturbing after decrypting mckenzie's phone investigators discovered several photos of her
23:48posing with large sums of cash despite having no documented job or known source of legitimate income
23:54they also found fake ids seemingly intended to help her pass as an adult but most concerning was a
24:02snapchat conversation dated july 22nd 2022 in which mckenzie quoted one thousand dollars for pictures and
24:10two thousand five hundred dollars for an in-person meeting to do quote anything you want taken together the
24:18materials painted a deeply troubling picture on top of this her phone revealed numerous examples of
24:24reckless driving videos showed her speeding smoking marijuana behind the wheel recording snapchats while
24:30distracted crashing during a practice run and laughing about it letting go of the steering wheel and
24:36even bragging about driving recklessly but in november detectives would discover evidence far beyond
24:43any reasonable doubt after analyzing mckenzie's phone location data investigators were able to retrace
24:50her movements in the days leading up to the crash that's when they made a dark discovery just days
24:56before the incident mckenzie had driven down the exact same road seven times heading straight towards
25:04the same brick wall she had practiced the route officers believed they had gathered enough evidence to
25:12prove mckenzie had planned the murders on november 4th 2022 more than three months after the incident
