00:00back to keep us company with another song headed up to the charts after all
00:03thank you so much for coming in to see of course always a pleasure how are you
00:08i'm doing really good i'm doing really good i was just talking to ashley from
00:11your record label i just got a puppy who's 10 weeks old who has been like
00:14owning my life oh yeah yeah and it makes me think about like people like you who
00:18have four children i'm like how does anyone have a child like a puppy is so
00:21much they are they are and we have we have
00:25four kids and two dogs and are thinking about getting another dog
00:27so we just sort of never stop yeah he's a little bit older yeah
00:30so fun i feel like you are having the best summer are the girls
00:34back in school they start like tomorrow or thursday yeah oh my gosh what grades are
00:40everybody going to be in because lennon will go to school this year right
00:42they're off they're off we're going to be in school five days a week
00:44this will be so me and lauren are about to really reconnect
00:47lauren's got to be like what is she going to do with an entire i mean i'm sure she
00:50has plenty there's a lot of the entire day but like wow
00:53yes we have uh willow gray's going into fourth grade
00:56what yeah ada james is going into second grade and then we have two pre-k
01:00five pre-k three so oh my god yeah that is crazy tr life's moving quick
01:06it is moving very that's right i'm sure that they're all really excited to go are
01:09they they're excited to go back to school they love school
01:11like that's all you can ask for is that when you drop them off they're like i'm
01:16ready to go right like leave me alone well i'm sure that like i always feared
01:19we'd have like the latch kid you know the one that like didn't want to like
01:21crawl off of us but they they love their friends and they love their school so
01:24that's good awesome that'll be great and then you recently got to cross a big
01:28one off the bucket list yeah you and i talked about this before you got to
01:30headline at fenway yeah talk about that man i feel like i've talked about it so
01:35much like even just in my internal like my family and friends reaching out that
01:39didn't get to make it they're like how was it like it was just such a dream it
01:43really was um something i've wanted to do since the very first day i started in
01:47this career and gotten to play every other venue in boston two or three times
01:51opening for people and and uh fenway has kind of always been on fenway and
01:55wrigley both have always been on my bucket list but we got to cross off
01:57fenway this year and sold out 35 000 people um we bought the you know this
02:03little wristbands that cold play kind of it was like worth every penny yes like
02:07getting to watch it in the crowd um and getting to do it with teddy swims too
02:10was was pretty awesome just the year me and him have had together and getting to
02:14share that stage and and uh it was just awesome so is wrigley the next thing that
02:18you like want to cross off the bucket list i thought it i i would love to um but
02:22i'm also kind of of this mindset of like man that was my that was my goal you
02:26know what i mean so now anything that else happens past that is just cherry on
02:29top so i'm trying to think too too far in the future on that kind of stuff uh
02:33just really still trying to still honestly just coming off a high from that
02:36show and it's been almost two weeks um me and the band talk about it all the
02:40time just how insane it was but uh yeah huge bucket list moment for me that's so
02:44amazing and then you also got to celebrate your first diamond certified yeah that is
02:48why i'm like yeah congratulations that's such an accomplishment yeah when that
02:52when that got presented to me i kind of thought it was a thing that happened a
02:56lot and now i'm learning that it doesn't happen all the time and so now what
02:59there's like 14 15 total yeah country which is crazy it's crazy uh yeah to have
03:03one of those that you know also was such a was such a um just came from an honest
03:09part of my heart knowing something i could write from the depths of me towards
03:13someone that i love that could resonate with that many people um that makes it all
03:16more special yeah definitely and i feel like that song it's probably one of the
03:19ones that you like never get tired of totally and everybody's still screaming
03:22it for sure every single night um better in boots tour looks like it has
03:26been so much fun i saw kevin james was out it's been so much fun he's doing
03:29recon for a movie or something is that what i heard him telling jelly roll which is
03:33yeah he's been hanging with jelly a bunch um and he reached out to my team and he
03:36was like hey i'll drive my truck i just want to come to all three shows this
03:39weekend and he showed up early in the morning and worked out with me and did vocal
03:43lessons with me even sang something about a woman with me in new york and it was
03:47like it was amazing because i've always been a huge kevin james hitch is like one
03:50of my favorite movies ever oh my god yeah and uh such a good one and you know
03:54we've watched all the mall cops and and king king of queens and uh just such a
03:59such a genuine human who just really wants to learn you know to make this movie
04:03great and uh we had such a great time with him that's so much fun i don't think
04:06i've ever asked you this but would you ever do any acting like are you
04:09interested i would love to yeah i think if my schedule ever permitted me to be
04:13anywhere for a three-month span you have four kids five days a week in school
04:16maybe you could that's right yeah no it's always been kind of a dream of mine
04:19to act but it would have to be the right role
04:21with the right script and the right movie but um yeah it'd be really fun
04:25yeah that would be great and then i don't know that you and i talked about
04:28this either but tucker wetmore has been in here a few times he's out on the
04:31road with you and he is just the way he talks about how much he looks up to you
04:34like just like and it's really like not just like your career but also your
04:38family i also i just think it's so sweet like how
04:41like he was so excited to just go out on the road and learn from you and i'm
04:45curious like what it's been like having him out
04:46it's been awesome you know i feel like this year this year and last year i've
04:50gotten to know so many of the newer artists in our format
04:52um and they all just happen to be a decade younger than me
04:55i know right i'm always like tucker you're 25 yeah he's 25
04:58you know he's too bad he's bad looking too right you know what i mean
05:02but he uh he really is such a sponge i mean
05:06i can't imagine because like when i first started in this business like
05:09you just were you just were forced to go through all the ranks
05:13you know what i mean like if your song went on the radio
05:15that was it you know what i mean and you would go open for anybody and everybody
05:19you'd play bars for 30 people and now
05:21i'm not saying that either one is right or wrong but now you can literally be
05:25your mom thinks you're good and you put you put some tiktoks up there and the
05:29next thing you know the world goes when you headline in a football stadium
05:32and you're like well i don't even i don't know how to play 30 minutes much
05:36less you know what i'm saying and so it's been interesting to get to know him
05:39he was like man i played my first show ever last year
05:41and i didn't know that and then i watched his first few shows and i was like bro
05:46like you're such a natural at this
05:48he's also like a classically trained piano player
05:52yes he's insane when he starts there's like those videos that went viral of him
05:56at cma fest playing the piano i'm like what it's it's great i thought i was
05:59like bro you need to lean into that yeah like that's a superpower you know
06:03truly um but yeah every every every so often like him and all his boys like
06:07they're you know they stay up till four or five o'clock in the morning every
06:09night just blaring music outside the bus and
06:11i'm like y'all shut up this old man is trying to like get some sleep um
06:15when we were just talking to you before with like turn on the mic just that
06:17you've stopped drinking a little like the last 90 days yeah and trying this out
06:21and you probably feel amazing you're like please go to bed
06:23100 but i also remember what it's like to be 25 and on the road for the first
06:26time you know so if you don't do that it never makes sense later on for sure
06:29um but no he he really is such a um this is the wrong word but he's so
06:34teachable i don't know if that makes any sense but like he any anytime he's
06:37asked me for my advice and i've you know given him a couple tips on his
06:41show or maybe some things that i would change if i were him he like
06:44incorporates them like the next night and it's pretty wild to watch um but
06:49that's been kind of the biggest joy of my life right now like i still love
06:51playing shows and love writing them but when younger artists do come to me and
06:55ask me for any not even just show advice but how do i how do i have a family and
06:58do this or how do i have kids and do this like
07:00that's kind of become one of my favorite parts of being in this business right now
07:04is just sort of being you know a guy that's done it for 14 years and made all
07:08the wrong decisions and some of the right ones and
07:10being able to lead people in a direction where they can you know hopefully not do
07:13the same things bad that i did so i do feel like whenever anybody talks
07:16about like figuring out the balance of this career which is so unique everyone's
07:21always like whatever thomas redd is doing it's like what i want to do like
07:24everyone wants to emulate especially your family life well listen we've done a lot
07:29of work we've all done a lot of therapy we've all we've all worked a lot on
07:31ourselves and and i think that that's kind of put us where we are now and it's
07:35been fun to pour into um younger people i feel like my wife and i both we love
07:39doing that so much so that's so special let's talk about after all the bars are
07:43yeah will you tell me the story behind this song yeah i wrote this song with
07:47um people you may know a guy named jay cash john byer and jackson free my buddy
07:51julian bonnetta who produced this whole record and um i think i'm always just
07:55trying to figure out a new way to say i love you you know and um when this idea
08:00was brought it wasn't it didn't even start as a love song but we kind of morphed
08:02it into one as the song kind of got going and um i don't know this song to me
08:07reminded me so much of like me and lauren's like college days when i'd go visit her
08:10in knoxville and we'd go to you know 10 roof till two o'clock in the morning
08:14but the but the party wasn't over and so we'd have to figure out something else
08:17to do and those are some of my favorite memories of
08:19of us as like a dating couple um so this song brought back a lot of
08:23nostalgia for me and and uh and hopefully a lot of people as
08:26well yeah definitely all right this is one of my favorite records that you've
08:29ever put out and this would be number one number 24 correct i believe yeah is
08:33this the last single from this album are you gonna well we've been putting out so
08:37much music this summer that's part of like i hate the word deluxe no but it's
08:40like it like it's kind of just extended does it's like the special editions of
08:44the album with different songs totally um yeah i think we're still thinking on
08:48it you know it's um it's a new landscape you know i mean like i don't think you
08:51have to be able to pick what the next thing is today you can kind of let some
08:55things come out let let people kind of tell you like hey we actually we love this
08:58one you know and kind of let it do with some of the work on its own but um
09:00there's a few that we're i think we're deciding between right now what we want to
09:03roll with next but um yeah gonna gonna let bars finish and breathe and
09:07hopefully go into recurrent you know so people can hear it more um
09:10uh i feel like in this day and age a lot of these songs don't get heard a lot
09:14until they're in the top five and so i feel like bars is getting this extreme
09:16exposure right now so um we have some time yeah have you been like any
09:21writing at all or i would say have you even had the time yeah
09:24yeah every weekend on tour i've had writers out we've already started writing for
09:28the next project and you're a machine and uh it just sort of never stops yeah
09:31so um speaking about being on the road so i was talking to luke bryan was on the
09:35show last week and i was asking i was like you know we got tr coming in like
09:38what should i ask about he's like oh tr called me the other day
09:40we were gonna golf he's like and instead we just had like a five minute mini
09:43therapy session that's all we ever do yeah well and that's what he said and i
09:46thought that that was so sweet the two of you have that kind of relationship yeah
09:49well because luke i mean you know when i first started he was and still is one of
09:53the biggest things in our format and i got the opportunity to open for luke a
09:57bunch and i've actually modeled a ton of like my stage presence and banter with
10:02the crowd based on things that luke did you know in the early or like 2012
10:06through 15 or whatever and so um i feel like there was a stage where a lot of
10:11people were like you're just trying to be luke bryan and i'm like heck yeah he's
10:13the biggest artist in the world why would i not be um and so through that you
10:17know over the last 10 years i will call luke just about anything like hey what
10:22what songs should end the show with or like hey what do you do when your voice
10:25is trashed on a saturday or whatever and luke has just always been such a great
10:29helper um and and is able to kind of give me some comedic relief in times of
10:35stress on the road and uh he's kind of just always been like a big in a way kind
10:39of like an uncle to me because i've known him since i was super young and he's
10:42written a bunch of songs with my dad and um but i don't see luke i don't see
10:47anyone near as much as i wish i did um and that's going to change i think as my kids
10:50get older so i forgot i like forgot that he would have been writing a lot with
10:54your dad do you remember like the first time you met luke or being around like
10:57how old were you well i remember when my dad and dallas davidson and ben hayslip
11:01started this little writer group called the peach pickers and like there for like
11:04three years every single luke had was a song that my dad wrote you know i mean
11:09minus country girl shake it for me it was like i don't want this night to end like
11:13that whole stretch was was all peach picker songs and so got to know luke a lot
11:17when i was in college yeah that is so much fun and then i didn't realize that
11:21you've got the castle is on the road yeah that till his nephew is dating lily
11:25dude i love till yeah that's what he said he's like till loves
11:28so much like that kid is he kind of is luke
11:32kind of like walks like luke and talks like luke
11:35um but yeah it's been cool the castle is first of all are
11:39the most talented like they're insane like i love watching their show
11:42and uh yeah i met obviously met lily the lead singer and she was she was like
11:47this is my boyfriend till he was like i'm luke's nephew and i'm like of course
11:50you are yeah you know and uh but it's been it's been a blast
11:53having them on the road that's so much fun before we wrap up the week that we
11:56have you on the show there i always like you know we have these
11:59topics and stuff that we do with listeners and i want to give you some of
12:02them yeah also so one of the ones that we're going to be talking about is
12:04what is oh actually this is perfect for what you and i were just talking about
12:08something you stopped doing that made your life better
12:10oh um yeah i mean i haven't i haven't drank in
12:14about 80 or 90 days i haven't really kept a tally but it's been
12:17since like may-ish and uh i will probably drink again at some point
12:23like i do love wine i do love bourbon but um
12:25it has been a lot easier on the road i will say that for sure i'm sure easier
12:29on your voice easier on the voice uh sleep is the thing that i will it'd be
12:33hard to compromise my sleep has just been
12:35absolutely insane like i know my garmin watch you know just sitting there
12:39going your sleep score is 100 and i'm like that's good that never happened
12:41do you do that oh yeah i like have not let myself like get the ring or do anything
12:46because i'm like i am so competitive i'll be like it's not 100
12:49well yeah i mean even on the road last year you know i'd have like a tequila
12:52drink before i went to bed or whatever and wake up and your watch would say pay
12:54attention you know what i'm saying you're like
12:57well that's a good start that's a good start of the day
12:59a great start today uh what causes you to lose sleep other than alcohol yeah i mean sleep i mean
13:06it's just so hard to wind down after a show i mean the way that i can equate it is like if you
13:09went and did crossfit at 9 30 p.m there's no way that you'd fall asleep at 11 and especially when
13:16you're riding on the road you're you're super adrenaline boosted from the show and then you
13:20really don't wind down until 1 30 or 2 o'clock in the morning and then you don't wake up till 11
13:26and then you come home on a sunday and now you're back into this like oh we're going to bed at 9 and
13:31we're waking up at 5 for school routine it's just like the week just it's just it's like you have
13:35jet lag every week sure and so like yeah definitely not drinking alcohol has helped a ton in just the
13:41transition of like going from the road back to home back to the road yeah just being in like peak
13:47condition yeah uh the secret to a happy marriage is oh man probably just being aligned being aligned
13:53being aligned on all fronts finances um the way that we're going to raise our kids the schools we're
13:59going to go to church we're going to go to like just being right here the whole way makes for so
14:04much more of a peaceful marriage but it takes work and it takes a lot of conversation and you know
14:09maybe some arguments here and there but um but i think just alignment is is what i would say i think
14:14that's great and then this one i think is funny most expensive mistake you've ever made
14:18most expensive mistake i feel like mine are probably like car related like i've crashed a
14:23couple cars that's probably the most expensive but um most recently valentine's day oh no uh there's a
14:30new sushi restaurant in nashville called the sushi bar have you been yes no i haven't been but this
14:35is the one that's unbelievable a 17 course yes like a 17 course sushi meal like they fly their fish in
14:40from japan every day it's like it's insane and you know me trying to book a valentine's date the day of
14:46valentine's day um i called one of the guys that works over the sushi bar and i was like um
14:51like hey do you think i could you know i could get in and he was like yeah i'll just i'll just give
14:55you the room and for me and lauren to go sit in i was like sick you know and this is for the record
15:00i love the sushi bar and i love this guy that gave me this reservation um we went in and uh you know
15:06both ordered sushi we both did like the sake yeah the pairing the whole and i got my bill and i was like
15:12why is that so much money like i knew this place was expensive and he was like well you you rented
15:18the room out and i was like how much is the room oh yeah and i think without that sake flight i might
15:25have had to might have had to ask some questions but i was like just sign we'll never do that again
15:30so oh my god that was an expensive mistake funny well thank you for sharing those thank you for coming
15:34in to see us i'm like so happy to see the song do well like i said to you like i love every song on
15:38this record and if you put on another single i'll be excited about there you go thomas rett so good
15:42to see you thank you thank you
