00:04Well, Jeff, Hurricane Aaron is certainly showing its tropical storm-like conditions.
00:09We've been talking about it, right?
00:10Rain not coming down just yet.
00:12We may see that potentially overnight into this morning, right?
00:14But the bigger thing that we're talking about is those wind gusts anywhere from
00:17potentially 30 to 50 miles per hour.
00:20On top of that, we are seeing incredibly rough surf, those rip currents,
00:25very, very strong, and storm surge.
00:28That is the talk of the town here in Buxton, North Carolina.
00:32The Atlantic Ocean directly behind us here.
00:34And wow, that's a show for you.
00:37Come on now.
00:38That's an angry ocean.
00:39Okay, right now we are seeing anywhere from probably 7 to 10-foot waves,
00:45but there are times, Jeff and Damien, that we have seen waves topple way over 10 feet here in the Outer Banks.
00:54Again, I was talking about that storm surge.
00:56Our photographer, Andy, yesterday really got into this area.
00:59Again, we're in one of those locations that is under a mandatory evacuation order.
01:03Now, just in the distance, we've got some people that are hanging out,
01:06really looking at the surf themselves.
01:08These are really, I have to say, the people that we're seeing here,
01:12they're one of the very few people that are remaining in this area,
01:16left in the Hatteras Island, Rodanthe, and Buxton areas.
01:20A lot, oh, look, lots of smiling faces.
01:22Hey, guys.
01:24Yeah.
01:25They're having fun with it right now.
01:27And certainly the kids.
01:28Can you show us something?
01:29Do it.
01:30Come on.
01:31Show us.
01:32All right, ready?
01:33Let's see if they can do something for us.
01:35We're going to get them live if we can.
01:36And now as we're waiting for that to happen, again, a number of people still here on the island,
01:41but many people on a more serious note are under that mandatory evacuation order.
01:46A lot of the homes that are in this area, officials say, get out while you can.
01:50It's unsafe to be here.
01:51And clearly you can see, again, the Atlantic Ocean, those waves just ripping up and over.
01:57Wow.
01:58Look at that.
02:00All right, let's see if we can show some of these guys riding the waves here.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Yeah.
02:04Oh, come on.
02:05How cool is that?
02:06See, a little bit of fun, but on a more serious note, again, we're talking about that surf.
02:11And a lot of those surfers, again, while we're in that double red flag warning, absolutely no swimming allowed.
02:16That'll probably stay in effect until Friday.
02:18But we got to talk to a surfer yesterday who said, wow, these waves, he's never seen anything like it.
02:24Take a listen.
02:25I've been surfing for 60, 70 years.
02:28I've never seen a swell this far ahead, way far ahead of the hurricane, anywhere near anything like this.
02:35It's amazing.
02:36It's amazing.
02:37The weather starts breaking out in the second, third, or fourth, or fourth, or fifth bar, that's when you know you've got something going on.
02:44And again, we're talking about those tropical storm-like conditions.
02:52I think the important thing to note here is that while we aren't going to see that direct hit, we are going to see some significant damage, a lot of that having to do with the storm surge in areas like we're in right now, live in Buxton.
03:06Again, majority of this area, especially as we are inching closer to that high tide, which we're about less than an hour away from at this point, a lot of this part of the island is now underwater.
03:26That is the reality for a lot of the families in this neighborhood.
03:31Now, what we'll see later on tonight, and then high tide again tomorrow morning, will certainly play into what we potentially may see in terms of damage here.
03:39But let's, uh, I don't know if I'm tossing it back to Damian or Jeff, but guys, that was good.
03:46Right on cue.
03:47The Atlantic Ocean.
03:49Scary, scary thing it can be during Hurricane Aaron, guys.
03:54Yeah, very, very fierce waves.
03:56Very strong and dangerous out there.
03:58Allie, be safe.
03:58Thanks for that.
03:59We are learning of more closures along parts of North Carolina Route 12.
04:03Here's a view from Cape Fear, North Carolina, from Frying Pan Shoals.
