Staff at a Queensland childcare centre have been praised for shielding children from a terrifying incident. A 28-year-old man smashed his way into the facility before dying from self-inflicted injuries.

00:00Police say they were called to the Perigian Springs Childcare Centre at about 6pm on Monday night following reports of a disturbance.
00:10It's alleged a 28 year old man forced his way into the Habitat Childcare Centre.
00:15Police say the man was self-harming and sustained serious injuries.
00:19Officers treated the man before paramedics arrived but he died at the scene a short time later.
00:25No other person was injured during the break-in.
00:28In a statement the Childcare Centre said 5 staff members were able to hide away 6 children who were at the centre during the incident.
00:36It says none of the children witnessed the offender after his initial attempts to enter the building.
00:41Police are treating it as a death in custody and is now under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner.
00:48Education Minister John Paul Langbrook praised the staff at the centre.
00:53For many of those students and teachers it's a particularly traumatic experience they've gone through.
00:58I think that those early childhood teachers and educators are heroes and any counselling service that is needed will be provided.
01:07Habitat Childcare Centre thanked first responders who they say arrived within minutes of the alarm being raised.
