00:01According to an article written by Thornton's Law, the chance of being injured on a theme
00:05park ride is quoted as 1 in 24 million.
00:10Health and safety advice is applicable to every theme park and funfair ride, whether
00:14it be advice to do with height, weight, nervous disposition or health conditions.
00:20It's reported that it's as important for individuals to heed warnings and to ride rides
00:25within their limits as much as it is important for ride operators to carry out checks on
00:30rides and to act responsibly when they are in operation.
00:34According to Buckinghamshire New University, every roller coaster undergoes extensive safety
00:40testing before it opens to the public.
00:43Furthermore, amusement parks implement daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections wherein
00:50engineers inspect structural components, seat restraints and emergency breaks in order
00:56to ensure the safety of all theme park goers.
01:00In the UK, all rides must pass rigorous safety checks under the Amusement Device Inspection
01:05Procedure Scheme.
01:07A recent Freedom of Information request put to the Health and Safety Executive found that
01:12there were 3,188 injuries in England, Scotland and Wales at funfairs between April 2014 and
01:19March 2024.
01:21This included slips, trips and falls.
01:24The BBC reported that a recent Panorama unveiled serious concerns within the industry to do with
01:30the regulation of funfair inspections as well as accidents, criminal convictions and safety
01:37warnings linked to one particular inspector.
01:40The BBC also reported that the Health and Safety Executive has said that it expects those
01:46who enjoy fairgrounds to be kept safe and adds that incidents are rare.
01:51It has also been reported that the HSE is currently reviewing its industry safety guidance to decide
01:57whether it, and the system it underpins, remains fit for purpose.
