00:00U.S. President Donald Trump raised hopes of a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia
00:06as he welcomed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the White House.
00:12Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed the Kremlin would accept some security guarantees for Ukraine.
00:19Speaking at the meeting with Zelensky and European leaders, Trump described it as a very significant step.
00:25He added that European nations would need to take a lot of the burden, but that the U.S. would help them.
00:32Zelensky said the world leaders who gathered in Washington had discussed security guarantees
00:36and that it had been a very good conversation.
00:41French President Emmanuel Macron called for a four-way summit between Ukraine, Russia, the U.S. and Europeans.
00:48His German counterpart, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urged a ceasefire in Ukraine
00:53before any meeting between Kyiv, Moscow and Washington.
01:00At least seven people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured
01:04after Russia struck Kharkiv overnight into Monday.
01:08Ukrainian officials say the Kremlin fired a new barrage of missiles and drones targeting the northeastern city.
01:14Regional governor of Kharkiv, Oler Sinehubov, says a two-year-old boy was among those killed in the attack.
01:20Six of those wounded were also children, ranging from 6 to 17 in age.
01:25Local officials say many victims are still trapped under the rubble, warning that figures may continue to rise.
01:32Kharkiv has been a target of Russia's intensified aerial assault.
01:36On Sunday, the city was struck with an array of drones and guided bombs, injuring several people.
01:42The adjacent Sumy region also came under Russian attack in the early hours of Monday.
01:47Two people were injured and more than a dozen homes and an educational institution sustained damage.
01:53The Black Sea port city of Odessa has also been placed under monitoring
01:57after residents reported hearing explosions late on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday.
02:02The attacks come as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington
02:07for a crucial meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House.
02:12Trump, just hours before he's due to welcome Zelensky,
02:15ruled out joining NATO and reclaiming Crimea as part of any potential peace deal with Russia.
02:21The meeting comes just days after Trump's Alaskan summit
02:24with Russia's President Vladimir Putin in a military base on Friday.
02:27Zelensky, making his first visit to the White House since late February's dramatic showdown,
02:33will be accompanied by a slew of European leaders,
02:36NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
02:48Russian President has reportedly told Donald Trump that one of his demands is full control of Donbass.
02:55The region in eastern Ukraine with a pre-war population of six and a half million people
03:02includes two regions, Donetsk and Luhansk.
03:06Moscow's demands regarding it are not new.
03:09They aren't even from 2022.
03:12Putin has been trying to occupy Donbass for 11 years since Russia's first invasion of Ukraine.
03:17But even with the fallout war of 2022,
03:20Moscow still failed to occupy all of Donbass militarily
03:24and hopes to do it now with the maximalist demands under Trump's mediation.
03:29The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War estimates
03:32that Russia will be unable to seize all of Donetsk region rapidly by force
03:39since Moscow has been trying to do so for over a decade and failed.
03:43Russia could only rapidly seize all of Donetsk region
03:47if Ukraine concedes to Putin's demands and withdraws from it.
03:53Putin's claim that Russian forces will inevitably seize all of Donetsk region
03:58if the war continues is false.
04:02The Russian campaign for Chasivyar began in May 2023
04:05after Russian forces seized Bahmut east of Chasivyar
04:09and has then intensified a year later in April 2024.
04:13It has taken Russian forces 26 months to advance roughly 11 kilometers
04:18from western Bahmut to the western edge of Chasivyar.
04:21The Pokrovsk assault campaign began in February 2024
04:25after the seizure of Avdiyevka.
04:27Moscow has dedicated multiple efforts to seizing Pokrovsk
04:30through frontal assaults, envelopment or encirclement,
04:33all of which have thus been unsuccessful after more than 18 months.
04:38Putin previously said that he also wants to control
04:41two more regions of Ukraine, Zaporizhia and Kherson.
04:46This, according to the UK Defense Ministry,
04:48would take Moscow four years and a half
04:51and two more million Russian casualties killed and wounded
04:56on top of one million troops that Russia has already lost in casualties
05:00since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
05:08Hamas informed mediators that it approved the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal,
05:13several international and Israeli media outlets reported.
05:17The proposal was presented to the militant group a day before.
05:21It involved a framework agreement for a 60-day ceasefire
05:25and a two-step release of the hostages held in Gaza.
05:28Egypt and Qatar were mediating the talks with Hamas
05:31in an effort to revive the stalled negotiations.
05:34Speaking at a news conference,
05:36the Egyptian foreign minister also addressed rumors
05:39about Palestinian relocation.
05:40efforts to reach a ceasefire were ramped up
06:04after Israel announced plans to take complete control of Gaza City.
06:07This had raised further international concerns amid fears
06:11of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip.
06:18The U.S. envoy to Lebanon said Washington would seek an economic proposal
06:22for post-war reconstruction in the country
06:25after Beirut endorsed a U.S.-backed plan for Hezbollah to disarm.
06:29Tom Barrack also said his team would discuss
06:33the long-term stop to hostilities with Israel
06:36after months of diplomacy between Washington and Lebanon.
06:39We need participation.
06:41There's always a step-by-step approach,
06:44but I think the Lebanese government has done their part.
06:47They've taken the first step.
06:49Now what we need is Israel to comply with that equal handshake.
06:52Lebanon's decision last week to support
06:55a plan to disarm Hezbollah angered the Iran-backed group.
06:59They believe Israel's military should first withdraw
07:02from a part of southern Lebanon
07:04it has occupied since the end of the war last November.
07:08Hezbollah's secretary-general has vowed to fight efforts
07:10to disarm the group,
07:12sowing fears of civil unrest in the country.
07:14Deadly wildfires have so far burned through
07:21more than 3,400 kilometers of Spanish woodland,
07:24a record-setting figure for the country
07:26according to a European monitor.
07:29The fires have forced the evacuation
07:30of more than 30,000 people
07:32in the northern province of Galicia.
07:35Authorities are struggling to contain the fires.
07:37Madrid says 12 major wildfires are still ablaze
07:40as it awaits assistance from European countries.
07:43Two Dutch water dumping planes
07:45and firefighters from other countries
07:47are expected to arrive in the coming days
07:50under a European cooperation agreement.
07:53The country's civil protection unit
07:54also added on Monday
07:56that Spain is set to receive
07:57the largest contingent of international aid
08:00in history to battle the flames.
08:02Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez
08:04says a further 500 troops
08:06will be deployed to Galicia
08:07in a bid to boost firefighting efforts.
08:10The deployment is on top of 1,400 troops
08:13already on wildfire duty.
08:15Portugal, which was also victim to the fires
08:18gripping the Iberian Peninsula,
08:19appears to have better days on its horizon.
08:22The country is expecting cooler weather
08:24in the coming days
08:25in a much-needed respite
08:27after a string of severe wildfires
08:29which have also stretched Lisbon's resources.
08:32On Sunday, more than 4,000 firefighters,
08:351,300 vehicles, and 17 planes
08:38were deployed to tackle the flames.
08:40The blazes have so far burnt an area
08:42close to 1,400 kilometers,
08:45around 17 times more than what it was in 2024.
08:57Mathieu is a regular at Puckelpop,
08:59a Belgian music festival.
09:01It all began in 2017
09:03when one of his friends posted a message
09:05on social networks
09:06in which he shared their wish
09:08to attend the festival in a wheelchair.
09:10That's how he became acquainted
09:12with the Flemish agency Inter,
09:14which works to make festivals accessible to all.
09:17Since then, he has returned
09:18almost every summer with a companion.
09:20In particular, he can enjoy the concerts
09:22from an elevated platform accessible via a ramp.
09:26The festival has parking spaces
09:46and a priority entrance reserved
09:48for people with reduced mobility.
09:50People with special needs
09:52also have access to a campsite
09:53with adapted showers
09:54and sanitary facilities.
09:57According to Inter,
09:58this year, more than 130 festival goers
10:01stayed at that campsite,
10:02which is run by some 40 volunteers,
10:04and more than 400 people
10:06requested special facilities.
10:08There is a refrigerator for your medicine.
10:11You have more space around your tent
10:12so you can actually get out.
10:15Sometimes, otherwise,
10:16people just put their tent
10:18right in front of your entrance
10:20and then it gets dodgy.
10:24So, yeah, that's just...
10:26It makes it a bit more agreeable for us.
10:32And for those with hearing aids,
10:34a tool was developed
10:35that allows them to listen to the music
10:37directly into their devices.
10:40We have the hearing aid.
10:42It's called a hearing loop.
10:44And we have it for the main stage
10:46and the marquee.
10:48It's a system that they can put
10:50the hearing aids at the T-stand
10:52and then they can hear the music
10:55directly in their hearing aid
10:57instead of all the noises
10:58coming together in their hearing aid.
11:01Festival accessibility in Belgium
11:02has improved in recent years,
11:04but some festival goers believe
11:06there's still room for improvement.
11:08They could do better, of course.
11:10Depends which festival, I think,
11:12if the inter-organization
11:13is at a festival,
11:14you will be helped very well.
11:16But if they're not going to be there,
11:18it's not always too good,
11:20let's say like that.
11:21So there are a few festivals
11:22that are not too accessible.
11:25This year, Inter is working
11:26with roughly 60 festivals
11:28to make music accessible to all.
