Guitar World has been the ultimate resource for guitarists since the publication of its very first print issue in July 1980. Guitar World continues the magazine’s rich history online, and is now the home of the world’s greatest authorities on guitar playing, featuring articles not only from Guitar World, but also highly respected publications including Guitarist, Total Guitar, Guitar Techniques and Bass Player.
00:00What's up? It's Paul from Guitar World and today I'd like to say that it would make no sense for me
00:14to say something like, the wait is over on what I have over here because many of us didn't see
00:20this coming. That's right, your eyes do not deceive you. PRS guitars made some pedals.
00:26Let's take a quick look at them.
00:30Yes, you heard that correctly. PRS or Paul Reed Smith, maker of many of the finest electric
00:38guitars and acoustics and even amplifiers, have now thrown their hat in the stomp box ring
00:43and released three new guitar pedals. The horse meat transparent overdrive, the wind through
00:48the trees dual analog flanger and the merry cries optical compressor. All of these PRS pedals
00:55feature through hole soldering which broadens the component selection and allows for the
00:59best sounding parts to be used and they are also true bypass.
01:07According to PRS, the horse meat transparent overdrive is a built from scratch circuit designed to enhance guitar tone without coloring it. The pedal uses germanian diodes for a smoother and fuller overdriven crunch that closely approaches a meaty distortion as you increase the gain.
01:25You can see the controls. You can see the controls for the treble and bass to boost both the high and low end frequencies, while the voice control offers more tailoring of the harmonic content for added richness to your tone.
01:34Depending on the setting, of course, the horse meat can be used as a clean boost, straight overdrive, or push the front end of the amps preamp section to enhance the amplifier's distortion.
01:44by the voice control, while the voice control is a great depth in the tone, depending on the tone, and the voice control is a great way to add the ability to increase the tone.
01:51Depending on the setting, of course, the horse meat can be used as a clean boost, straight overdrive, or push the front end of the amps preamp section to enhance the amplifier's distortion.
01:57the amplifiers of distortion.
02:27PRS likes to say that the Wind Through the Trees dual analog flanger pedal is best described
02:44as two flangers fighting each other, or what I'd like to say, two flangers mixed into one
02:49another, resulting in a sound reminiscent of the wind whipping through the trees, hence
02:55its colorful name.
03:02The pedal features manual depth and ray controls per flanger, as well as global regeneration
03:14and added highs controls.
03:16There's endless flanging to be had with the Wind Through the Trees.
03:23Based on the classic LA-2A rack mount, a hand-wired and tube-based compressor, the Merry Cry's
03:29optical compressor pedal aims to thicken your guitar tone, curb signal peaks, increase sustain,
03:34and push your tone with definition and clarity.
03:41This pedal can also be used as a boost as well as a straightforward compressor, or even better,
03:55use it as a clean boost with a hint of compression.
03:58What's nice is the pedal's blue compression light shows you when the compression is actively
04:02kicking in.
04:09PRS should have used the slogan, expect the unexpected, for their brand new pedal launch.
04:14With the horse meat as a wonderful textured overdrive, Merry Cry's as a simplified studio quality,
04:20optical compressor, and the dual vintage flanging from their Wind Through the Trees analog flanger,
04:25PRS has come out of the gate swinging with three high-end stomp boxes built to last a lifetime,
04:30with classic sounds most guitarists will want to investigate further.
