Andy Timmons previously demonstrated how to play the primary theme to “One Last Time,” from his latest release, Electric Truth. In this column, he takes a look at the bridge of the song, which serves as the solo section. It’s basically just a repeating two-chord progression which Andy breaks down and describes his thought process on how he put this solo together.

00:00Hey everybody, Andy Timmons here. Welcome back to Melodic Muse for Guitar World Magazine.
00:22We're going to continue to examine my tune one last time from the electric truth record.
00:26And today we're looking at the bridge, which is basically the solo section of the tune,
00:31a little two chord progression. So we're going to break down how I played it,
00:35what the thought process was behind it.
00:56So let's break down the solo section now to one last time.
01:23And it's still in B-flat minor, but luckily we're going to just have two chords to navigate.
01:29And it's a basic, I always kind of think of it as Pink Floyd-esque.
01:33Because it's B-flat minor.
01:35I guess we can consider it like an A-flat over E-flat into E-flat major.
01:44Okay, so that's essentially what I'm going to be playing over.
01:53And it's all B-flat minor pentatonic.
01:57Maybe some of the...
02:00But I'm certainly going to address, when I get to that E-flat major,
02:04I'm going to want to address that note G to really give the flavor.
02:07The flavor of that, going to that major, whatever you want to call it,
02:13V chord in the key, if we're thinking A-flat major.
02:19Right?
02:22Really nice to hear that flavor as we go by.
02:25So we're coming out of a big bend.
02:30A big Albert King bend.
02:32And I guess I'd be on the D-flat.
02:37I'm bending up all the way to the F.
02:41And then releasing it.
02:46And a slight bluesy, cracky kind of bend at the end.
02:51Not quite up to the D, but...
02:57And then I just play it.
03:02Because right then, we're on that E-flat.
03:11And then the next little move.
03:18It's probably my favorite part of the solo,
03:19because I'm playing...
03:21Down here, I've got the F note on the D-string, on the 3rd fret.
03:25So I'm playing just the 5th and 3rd of that.
03:29The B-flat minor.
03:33But then I go...
03:34Then I bend from the B-flat, that 3rd fret of the G-string.
03:42And if I get just the right finger...
03:45Get a little bit of a fleshy overtone.
03:51Right there.
03:53Slapping it a bit.
03:57Releasing it.
03:57That's a whole step bend up to the C.
04:01Which is a nice tension note.
04:02That's the 9.
04:04Really wants to go somewhere.
04:05That wants to resolve either to the B-flat or...
04:08Or up to that 3rd.
04:10So it's a real pleasant resolution,
04:12because I'm bending...
04:12Up to the D-flat.
04:16The 3rd.
04:20Releasing it a half step.
04:22To that C.
04:23Then down to the B-flat.
04:24So it's a melody happening in the bend.
04:34And there...
04:35Since I'm down in this position...
04:38I've got that A-flat to G...
04:41To give the...
04:42The 3rd of that E-flat chord that we're going to.
04:49And I might have given the...
04:50You can use some finger vibrato.
04:51I might have used the tremolo bar a little bit.
04:56And then...
04:57So I'm dipping the tremolo bar just slightly...
05:02As I pull off from that A-flat.
05:08Yeah, we're not often in the key of B-flat minor...
05:10Going to E-flat.
05:11So it's kind of nice to have that open G...
05:13Be the 3rd of a chord.
05:17So I pull off.
05:21But while I pull off...
05:23I'm dipping into the open G-string.
05:28Then I play the root.
05:31Play the E-flat, B-flat, D-flat.
05:34So of the E-flat...
05:36It's the 3rd, root, 5th, and B-flat 7.
05:40I'm just arpeggio-ing.
05:44The simplest notes you could play...
05:45But sometimes the most effective, right?
05:47So...
05:48Another...
05:55Got a little whammy happy on this one.
05:58It sounds like...
05:59But again, it's just a way of...
06:03Again, making more out of it...
06:05Because I could have...
06:05I could have just played the notes...
06:09But it just needed the energy.
06:16So I finish that phrase.
06:19And then I'm just climbing up the B-flat minor pentatonic.
06:22Now again, I'm going to make use of that tension...
06:31Of the C-natural over that B-flat minor chord.
06:34Just a real pretty sound.
06:36I've always liked that sound on a minor.
06:44But here, I'm bending from that B-flat to the C...
06:47Down to the F to A-flat.
06:52So you can kind of hear...
06:58You know, there's points of tension...
07:02And going places...
07:02But finally...
07:04Just kind of getting back to home.
07:07The home tone.
07:08That B-flat.
07:13Right?
07:14Could have been...
07:16Here, I'm bending from that D-flat up to an E-flat.
07:22So it's the 4th.
07:24But...
07:24I'm just going scalarily back to that root.
07:29And then...
07:31I think I've been from the...
07:33Probably from the F, yeah.
07:34So as I get out of this B-flat minor...
07:37Now we're going to E-flat.
07:42So guess where I'm headed.
07:43I'm going to bend from that F to the A-flat.
07:46Now I'm just...
07:49I'm just...
07:49Again, just surrounding that...
07:51The 4th of the 3rd.
07:54So bending F...
07:55I have a minor 3rd...
07:57Releasing it.
08:00And then bending back up to just the G.
08:02So it's a minor 3rd bend, releasing, then up to a whole-step bend.
08:05Then I go back down.
08:12So again, now I'm thinking back into this position here.
08:14But playing the E-flat to F...
08:16And I'm bending from that F up to the A-flat.
08:19So it's a minor 7th again.
08:21So it goes...
08:26And to get a little emphasis, you'll notice a little...
08:29A little pick rake, where I'm muting everything leading up to that E-flat.
08:41Just to give it a little energy.
08:43Again, just to kind of set that note apart in a particular way.
08:47And the muting that's happening, it's kind of happening in two places.
08:51It's happening a little bit in the right hand, the picking hand, mute.
08:54So I might have the palm of my hand on the strings I'm wanting to just get the rake.
09:01But also...
09:02It's also happening in the left hand, where my thumb is kind of wrapped around
09:06and muting the low string.
09:08And even the underside of my fingers I'm not using for that note.
09:17Anyway.
09:18All these little things add up.
09:20And it's just part of the delivery of these notes.
09:24And I'm basically doing an ascending bend.
09:34It's the whole step bend.
09:36And then on the G string.
09:37And then re-articulating the note that I've arrived to on the B string.
09:45Originally, I would have gotten this type of thing from Hendrix.
09:47Where he would have bent that note and then held the fretted note
09:53that's being bent to in unison.
10:01So I'm going from that F.
10:04But this time, I'm only...
10:05I'm bending the note on the G string a whole step.
10:09And then fretting that note on the B.
10:15That's right off the B flat minor pentatonic.
10:16Those are the target notes.
10:19And then you go down to the G string, two frets above.
10:31And that's kind of the big peak of the solo as it goes into the little bridge channel.
10:35If you notice, there's a lot of times where, you know, it might make sense to alternate pick something.
10:45But sometimes the energy requires it.
10:51And on that big top note, that's pretty common for me on the treble strings,
10:55meaning the E and the B string.
10:57Instead of down-picking to get the tone, I'll pick underneath.
11:05Just get a little bit more meat of the pick and...
11:09A lot of times, some additional harmonic.
11:16Anyway, I'm just pointing that out for you.
11:17Something like that.
11:29And get into it.
11:31I'm exactly the same part in this show.
11:33Right there, I'm just saying...
11:35For more information.
11:36I'm just kidding.
11:38Not sure about the etc.
11:40Uncle Uncle Leo Maiden.
11:43Do you wanna learn how to get into it anyway?
11:45Once upon the time.
