01:30In the real world, with bumps and hedges, low-nosed, wide-bottomed Ferraris and Porsches,
01:36couldn't hope to keep up with either of them.
01:40They are astonishing.
01:42And yet, they're both relatively inexpensive Japanese saloon cars.
01:52So they've both got four doors, they've both got big boots, and they're both as reliable as a Swiss bus driver's Austrian pacemaker.
01:59What more could you possibly want?
02:03Let's deal with the Subaru first.
02:05The old model, the one with the silly headlamps, was a bit of a softening.
02:14The new one has a more attractive face, but don't be fooled.
02:18The steering's quicker, and the suspension is tougher.
02:21They've made it harder, edgier.
02:27Less of a car, more of a barroom brawler.
02:31It's a different story with the Mitsubishi Evo 8.
02:39The old Evo 7 was like a mafia hitman, without the compassion.
02:46At first glance, it seems they've made the Evo 8 even more hardcore.
02:52It's lighter, and its gearbox has six speeds, rather than five.
02:57In actual fact, though, they've made it a little bit softer, and a little bit quieter.
03:02They've even given it a proper big fuel tank.
03:05The old one used to have a Zippo in the back.
03:09You're only able to go four inches before you run out of petrol.
03:12So, the Subaru's been beefed up, and the Mitsubishi's been watered down.
03:18It seems, then, that these two cars have met in the middle.
03:24And that means I have to go out there, into the bigness of Scotland,
03:29and find out which one's best.
03:32Sometimes, you know, this job is very, very good.
03:42Nothing prepares you for the shock when you first take this thing round a corner.
03:55Take a test drive. Honestly, take a test drive.
03:59You will not believe how much grip there is.
04:03You just won't.
04:04This Subaru is a hugely manly experience.
04:11The noise it makes.
04:13It's got a macho gearbox. It's got macho steering.
04:16It even smells of man.
04:18The essence of burnt clutch.
04:22Splash it on all over, before going out at night for a curry and a fight.
04:26The Mitsubishi is much more technical.
04:39It's got an active centre differential,
04:41which moves the power to the front wheels or the back wheels,
04:44depending on which have the most grip.
04:46All I have to do is tell it whether we're on tarmac, gravel or snow.
04:51and then it's got something called super active yaw control,
04:57which moves the power from side to side.
05:01Sometimes then, in a really big corner, when you're really hammering,
05:05this car is one-wheel drive.
05:09So, I can sum them up like this.
05:11The Mitsubishi is like an F-16 fighter, light and highly manoeuvrable.
05:17The Subaru is more like an F-15, a fighter bomber.
05:21As far as power is concerned, both of them get close to 150 miles an hour,
05:35and both do nought to 60 in under five seconds.
05:41You can't split them on looks, either.
05:44And inside, both have willfully flimsy interiors
05:48that are lifted only by the big seats
05:50and the buttons for spraying cold water on the intercoolers.
05:56On the outside, the Subaru tries to lighten up with its pink and gold jewellery,
06:01but both these cars really are shamelessly aggressive.
06:06Look at the scoop on this bonnet.
06:09And they seem to have given the Evo so many steroids,
06:12it's started to grow out of its own body.
06:15You know what these cars should be called, don't you?
06:17The Mitsubishi, did you spill my pint?
06:20And the Subaru, you, outside, now.
06:24Trying to decide which is best is hard.
06:35They're both spoon-bendingly, hallucinogenically, law-breakingly mad and absurd.
06:42On a wide-open road like this, the nimbler Mitsubishi wins.
06:51But when things get narrow and bumpy,
06:54the Evo really does turn into a jet.
06:59On a difficult road like this, the Impreza feels more planted.
07:07So, which would I buy?
07:09Ooh, I can't give you an answer now.
07:13I'm having far too much fun.
07:20So, Jeremy, what did you discover
07:22after your unnecessarily long trip to Scotland?
07:25Nothing.
07:26Right.
07:27It's impossible to choose between these two cars.
07:29There's no tangible reason why you'd take one rather than the other.
07:32The only thing I will say is that when we'd finished filming
07:35and I just had to drive back to the hotel,
07:38I always found myself getting into the Subaru.
07:41No, exactly what you mean.
07:42Couldn't tell you why.
07:43I prefer the Impreza.
07:44Always have no idea why.
07:45It's like, you know, I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate.
07:48Yeah.
07:49I prefer Bedford to Bruce Forsyth.
07:52Right.
07:52Well, let's see if we can find out if there is any real differences
07:56between them on our test track.
07:57So, ladies and gentlemen, please say mushy-mushy to Stig-san.
08:03So, first up, the Impreza STI.
08:05This is the tweaked one, remember?
08:06And, oh, dear.
08:09An emotional Stig this week around Chicago.
08:12Now, at the limit, this car does understeer,
08:14so will that slow him down?
08:15It is looking good so far.
08:16Oh, he's, I reckon he's running,
08:21he is running wide there into the penultimate corner.
08:23Come on, Stig, keep it tight.
08:24We need a good time.
08:26And there's understeer there.
08:27Loads of understeer.
08:28And he goes, he goes round the finishing line.
08:31Now, what about the Evo 8?
08:33In the interest of fairness, I should point out
08:35this isn't the car that Jeremy drove in Scotland.
08:37It's the 301 horsepower FQ version,
08:4025 more than standard and one more than the Subaru.
08:42Looking very tidy around Chicago.
08:44no trace of understeer at all
08:46as it smoothly powers through the hammerhead.
08:50Good Lord!
08:52Screaming out of the follow-through
08:53over a second faster than the Subaru
08:55in the first sector, the Mitsubishi.
08:57Will it beat it over the finish line?
08:59Kicking up dust through Gambon.
09:01Right then, the times, I have them here.
09:03Are you ready?
09:03The Impreza STI, first of all,
09:04did it in one minute, 30.1,
09:07which puts it there faster than the Aston
09:09just behind the Z8.
09:10That is a very good time.
09:11And how much faster is that
09:13than the Impreza that we had in the last series,
09:15the old model?
09:15It's just under one and a half seconds.
09:18One and a half seconds faster?
09:19That's very fast.
09:20But get this,
09:21the Mitsubishi Evo 8,
09:23one minute, 28.9.
09:26So that's...
09:27Can you reach?
09:27I can get that, Jeremy.
09:29Quicker than a Lamborghini Murcielago.
09:31That's astonishing.
09:32That is incredible.
09:33That's a very fast car.
09:34So the thing is,
09:34is that if you want to go around a track quickly,
09:37you take the Evo 8.
09:39But which would you choose?
09:41Impreza.
09:42No idea why.
09:43Neither of these cars,
09:44or indeed any of them really,
09:45on our power board,
09:46find much favour among the Guardian set,
09:49let's say.
09:50Whenever I go to a dinner party,
09:51I sit down,
09:51the person next to me
09:52always starts off by saying,
09:54please will you go and sit next to someone else?
09:56The second thing they say is,
10:00we've got a 70 mile an hour speed limit in this country,
10:02why do we have such fast cars?
10:05Well, the thing is,
10:06is that you can drive these cars quickly,
10:09because all of the country's racetracks,
10:10Silverstone, Branshatch, Cadwell,
10:12Alton Park, Scotland,
10:14all of them now run things called track days,
10:18where you take your own car along
10:19and drive it as fast as you want.
10:22Now, I always fancied going to a track day,
10:24but I needed the right car.
10:26Well, fortunately,
10:28this month,
10:28Peugeot have launched
10:29this 180 brake horsepower version
10:32of their 206 GTI.
10:42Bedford Autodrome,
10:44Palmer Sport Day.
10:45All over the country,
10:46people are queuing up
10:47to come to these
10:48run what you've run track days.
10:53And so,
10:54make way for the Peugeot 206 GTI
10:56180.
10:59There's always a lot of expectations
11:01surrounding a new hot hatch from Peugeot.
11:03It's because of the pedigree.
11:05It's because of the 205 GTI.
11:07After all,
11:10the 205 was an icon.
11:12It was one of the great hot hatches
11:14of the 1980s.
11:15Indeed,
11:16of all time.
11:21Yes,
11:22don't worry,
11:23that was me
11:24and not the car
11:25running out of talent,
11:26because the 206
11:27is well balanced
11:28and has masses of grip.
11:30And the good news is
11:31that engine
11:32has given it
11:32just the extra oomph
11:33of it needed.
11:34Probably take myself off now.
11:40Not far from the truth.
11:43It'll do 0-60
11:45in 7.1 seconds
11:46and can reach
11:47142 miles an hour.
11:49That's fast.
11:50and I think the 205
11:52would be proud
11:52of its offspring.
11:54But ultimately,
11:55the 206
11:56is at heart
11:56a civilised
11:57road car.
11:59Unfortunately,
12:00I've brought a knife
12:01to a gunfight.
12:06Because the whole point
12:07of a track day
12:08is to leave
12:09civilised roads
12:10and, let's be honest,
12:12civilised road behaviour
12:13behind.
12:15Why'd you do it then?
12:16Um,
12:17simply because
12:18there's too many
12:18damn speed cameras around.
12:20and I think
12:21it's a way of
12:22venting
12:23one,
12:23your passion
12:24to drive fast
12:24because you can't
12:25in this country anymore
12:26and why the hell
12:28buy a car
12:28that'll do
12:29155 miles an hour
12:30and not use it?
12:33It's easy to see
12:34why these
12:35Run What You Brun
12:36track days
12:36are booming.
12:37You don't need
12:38a race licence
12:39and you don't have
12:40to join a race series
12:41and follow a race calendar.
12:43It's just you,
12:44your car
12:44and your helmet.
12:47Look at this guy.
12:49Two grands worth
12:50of Honda Prelude
12:50and he thinks
12:51he's Jensen Buckley.
12:52I have never
12:53seen such
12:54an ordinary car
12:55take so much
12:57abuse.
12:58What was your mission?
12:58What was your mission?
13:00Thank you.
13:00Yeah,
13:01it was to have
13:01good fun,
13:02drive it as hard
13:02as I could
13:03and sort of
13:04drive the wheels
13:04off it.
13:05That takes
13:06serious effort.
13:08You have ruined it.
13:10Yeah,
13:10they were new
13:11last week.
13:11I should have got
13:12some second-hand ones,
13:13shouldn't I?
13:14Running an old knacker
13:15is actually
13:15quite a good idea
13:16because not surprisingly,
13:18track days
13:19are not covered
13:20by your ordinary
13:20road insurance.
13:22If I wanted
13:22to get insurance,
13:23it's probably
13:24going to be
13:24around £120
13:25for the day.
13:27So I usually
13:28just go out
13:28without it.
13:29If you broke it
13:30though,
13:30you push it
13:31off the circuit
13:32to a road,
13:32stick it in a ditch
13:33and go,
13:33look what happened.
13:36I have heard
13:36that happened.
13:37Yes,
13:37I've seen cars
13:39pushed out
13:39out of the road.
13:42That 206 GTI
13:43had given me
13:44track day fever,
13:46but it didn't
13:46provide the cure.
13:48I needed
13:49stronger medicine.
13:53This is the
13:54Palmer Jaguar,
13:55a track day
13:56thunderbolt
13:57and a more
13:57fitting remedy
13:58for a man
13:59who had once
14:00proclaimed.
14:01I am a driving
14:02goal!
14:09Oh my goodness!
14:15This
14:15is a
14:17properly
14:18quick car.
14:19It uses
14:19the 3.0-litre
14:20V6
14:21and a Jaguar
14:22X-Type.
14:23It's at about
14:23300 brake
14:24horsepower
14:24and it weighs
14:26about 600 kilos.
14:28That is
14:28very,
14:29very light.
14:30It means
14:31it's
14:32very,
14:33very fast.
14:35It really
14:36can
14:36travel
14:37at some
14:37incredible
14:38speeds.
14:39Straight up
14:40to 120,
14:43130.
14:45Absolutely
14:46awesome
14:47power of
14:48this thing.
14:49Turn it in
14:50far here,
14:51use that
14:52torque,
14:52that low
14:53down power.
14:54Come on!
14:56Yes!
15:00Ha ha!
15:02Oh,
15:03I may
15:03well have
15:04really
15:04overcooked
15:05that.
15:06this is
15:10amazing!
15:12Once more!
15:14I know
15:15I'm not a
15:15driving god!
15:17This is a
15:18car fit for
15:18one at least!
15:19so the
15:24driving god
15:25spinning off
15:26there at what
15:26I suspect
15:27was probably
15:28five miles
15:29an hour.
15:31Now these
15:31track days
15:32are such
15:32big business
15:33these days
15:34that there
15:34are lots
15:35of companies
15:35who are
15:35making cars
15:36specifically
15:37designed for
15:38the purpose.
15:39They're basically
15:39racers with
15:40number plates
15:41and indicators
15:41so you can
15:42take them
15:42on the road.
15:43This Parma Jag
15:44is one of
15:45them but
15:46it costs
15:47£47,000
15:48and that is
15:49quite a lot.
15:50Don't worry
15:51though because
15:51there are lots
15:52of others
15:52which are
15:53a little bit
15:54cheaper.
15:54So that's
16:23the stats.
16:23Now let's
16:24see which is
16:24fastest on
16:25the track.
16:26What the hell
16:27says is
16:28you don't
16:29get from
16:29me
16:30I'm a
16:32man
16:33I'm a

16:34and I

16:36I

16:40It's like
16:41honey
16:42You can't buy

16:45but I
16:46don't
