It's called ‘Just Us Gardens’ and it features beds designed by Justice Impacted Individuals currently in prison who wanted to support the community. WCCO's Susie Jones explores them.

00:00now ready yeah we are here this afternoon in north minneapolis at just us gardens the grand
00:08unveiling today of a project that's taken a lot of collaboration and a lot of effort
00:13and we're here with our tour guide uh oh you don't okay well you show me what we're seeing
00:20here and uh which which plot of land you wanted to show me which
00:25he said that his first meal when he gets out of prison is this okra dish that his mom makes
00:35they're from liberia and so we planted okra for him he's also very interested in medicinal plants
00:42healing plants and so all of these things have different healing properties um so lemongrass
00:48rosemary uh lemon balm all of these different things that are very calming very healing
00:53um okay lavender has come in handy because there's so many kids who come to the garden
00:58and you know kids sometimes get upset about different things and i always bring them to
01:02the lavender and it just really calms them down oh that's nice so this bed you have to come around
01:06to this side okay this bed and both manny and trevor were incarcerated as teenagers and tried
01:12as adults and so this is trevor brown's bed and he drew a picture and a word with the flowers so
01:22this says l i f e it's a little hard to see now and then the rest is strawberries oh nice he wanted
01:29a fruit that was perennial that would come back year after year and really wanted us to reflect
01:34on what does life mean to us um and really wanted to create this piece of artwork with his garden bed
01:40and it's just been so lovely people are attracted to the flowers in the garden and um you know it
01:49definitely makes me think about um you know what this all means and what does life mean yeah thank you
