00:00Not only did Luke get on this song, which is so nice of him to do because he's literally Luke Combs, he doesn't have to get on anything, but him loving the song so much was like so meaningful to me.
00:10Also, he invited me out to his Stagecoach headline performance to sing our song and do a music video like on his stage.
00:19That meant a lot. The music video out at Stagecoach was perfection. Awesome.
00:30So the song Backup Plan is about not giving up on your dream and not having a plan B because when I was growing up, my dad would always tell me if you're going to give 50 percent, then you might as well just go home.
00:42When I started doing music, I just had that feeling like you can't have a backup plan. You're going to get knocked down. You're going to have times where people don't believe in you. It's going to happen. Just get back up and keep going forward.
00:55The first time that I heard Backup Plan was actually like a rough demo on my phone and I was in the studio with my producer Austin and we were just kind of listening to songs that had been sent in and things that we have written beforehand.
01:08Backup Plan kept sticking out. Backup Plan is about not having a backup plan.
01:11So your bag's backed up against the wall and the bandwagon's falling right off and you're hearing all the talk about maybe you should think about what you're going to do if it don't work out.
01:25The visual that I see when I'm listening to that first part of the first verse is a guy that's just down on his luck. They want to quit. Everybody around them is just telling them you're not good enough. You should just quit and go find something else.
01:39It ain't about if it makes sense. Cause if the boot do it don't fit. As far as I can see there ain't no way to be somebody if you just gonna quit.
01:51I think that back half of the first verse is just really talking about like if you believe in what you believe in and you want to go do this you're never going to make it if you just quit.
02:02There's going to be all these people that are going to talk trash. What are you going to do every time somebody talks trash you're just going to quit?
02:07You're just going to lay down and not get back up? No. Of course not. That's not what legends are made of. We get back up.
02:13So I think it's just setting it up. Ready for this chorus.
02:17So if you got a fire don't lose it. If you gotta do or die dream do it. If you got something to prove go on and prove it. Don't let nobody clip your wings.
02:30I think in life if you have a fire in you and you believe in something you're already way ahead of everybody else because a lot of people don't ever get the opportunity to feel a fire.
02:40So if you got a fire don't lose it. If you got to do or die dream go do it. Because not everybody gets that in their life.
02:47And definitely don't let anybody clip your wings and tell you you're not good enough. It's your fire. Go chase your own fire. Don't quit.
02:54Keep your head down. Keep on the blinders. Tune out the doubters and all the close minders. If you're seeing your blood falling down ain't enough to change you. You were born to be.
03:06And getting back up. That's the only backup plan you need.
03:10That back half really reminds me of my dad. And just growing up with him and how hard he was on me. To never quit something that you started.
03:20Because he always hated quitters. He hated it. And he was like we're not quitters. Zimmermans are not quitters. He would always tell me that.
03:27The one thing that he always told me was keep my head down and tune out everybody. Like don't let anybody influence what you're trying to do.
03:34Because they don't see your vision. And they don't see what you see ahead. You're you. You got to be you.
03:40So getting back up is the only backup plan you need. Because we're only going towards one goal.
03:46We're not giving up and going to plan B or C. Plan A is the only plan I got. Because I'm making plan A work.
03:53Tucker Beathard, John Sherwood, Jimmy Bell wrote backup plan.
03:57It's crazy because some songs I don't write. But I feel them so much. And connect to them so much. I feel like I could have written them.
04:06And that's kind of what I'm always looking for. If I do cut an outside song. It's not going to feel fake when I sing it.
04:12Backup plan is one of those that I would love to take credit for writing it. But I didn't.
04:16But man I connect to it a lot. And it feels like my life.
