Can you make love to gospel music? That’s the question Masego asks on “Heaven,” released back in July on his album Fix Your Face. On the latest episode of Verified, the Jamaican American singer-songwriter digs deep into “Heaven” and explores how growing up in the church inspired the song’s lyrics.

00:00Heaven is about the innocent question of what are the rules of this religion that I've been
00:04born into.
00:06I had a crush when I was in church and I was wondering, how do we start a family?
00:10How do we make love?
00:17We just had like this, this like grandiose Jesus-like table and we would just discuss
00:23different topics.
00:23It'd be our therapy.
00:25This particular day, I was just curious, I'm like, there's a lot of women that have
00:29a Bible verse in their bio.
00:31The question is for you all, can we make love to gospel music?
00:55I'm going through the lens of when I was a youngster in church where all I'm doing is waiting for
01:02church to end so I can play tag.
01:03In these innocent years, I have my first crush in church, but I'm like, I can't hold her hand,
01:10can't hug her too long, so I'm like, what are the rules here, but I like this girl.
01:14I'm just thinking back to those initial questions as I'm listening to the sermon and hearing about
01:20what happens if you don't do this and don't do that.
01:22I put myself there first to then build to where I'm at now with the women in the Bible verses.
01:27Oh, I love a church girl, she got another side, putting on a sunny vest for me, making love
01:33to Hezekiah, walking in and out my life, dedicated to your soul journey.
01:39Hezekiah Walker was the first artist I heard during Hallelujah Night.
01:43When you don't go out trick-or-treating, you just dress up as a gospel artist and perform on stage.
01:50That's when you see most of the girls in church outside of church clothes.
01:53So it's just like, wait a minute.
01:54It's a memory that triggered like, okay, we got to ask this question again.
01:58Can I hug her?
01:59I memorize you like books in the Bible.
02:03Girl, you can't be my revival when you say my name, Mitch.
02:08I come from a time where we have Bible books.
02:10You know what I mean?
02:11That's what I had to have to buy certain things if I did certain tasks,
02:15like memorize all the books in the Bible.
02:17You know what I mean?
02:17Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, you know?
02:20Them Thessalonians used to get me, the Thessalonians.
02:22I know all of it, and the Bible books bought me a Bible.
02:26You know, they played you.
02:27I thought I was going to get a PS2, but you can only buy another Bible.
02:52I have a very fond memory of this Kirk Franklin music video.
02:57It might have been for Stomp, and then he caught the football,
03:00and it's all these tall football players in the neighborhood, and he's just like,
03:04hey, man, you know, I'm a Jesus freak.
03:06You know what I'm saying?
03:06Spread the gospel and all that.
03:08And it's that time in the 90s where like Kirk is like,
03:11whoa, you're going too far.
03:12Are these 808s in gospel music?
03:14You know what I mean?
03:15So I feel like I just have that memory of him always being forward-thinking
03:19and pushing the genre forward and placing himself in a lot of secular environments.
03:23I need that energy of like, let's push the conversation forward.
03:27Drewski did something.
03:28I don't know what, but I'm trying to do something over here.
03:31We're going to find our way to God somehow.
03:34After choir rehearsal, you would come over.
03:37I was so nervous, fearful thinking, happy simping,
03:42carrot clock and background singing.
03:44A lot of people don't understand like the schedule of a church kid.
03:48You know, you leave church to then go prepare for church.
03:51So it's like choir rehearsal.
03:53Now you're about to go to Bible study.
03:54I left church, but I'm playing church music at the crib.
03:57And so I feel like I wanted to get somebody that doesn't understand
03:59that to still picture what the life is looking like.
04:02You're not alone, you're not alone.
04:04I want your hand, I want your hand.
04:07I'll help you, I'll help you to understand, understand, understand.
04:13I love little Easter eggs in songs.
04:15I think there's this viral video from, well, back in the day of YouTube.
04:19You got Kiera Kiki Sheard and Karen Clark and they're like singing together.
04:23And you're seeing one of these things that the singer does where you can
04:28make a delay happen in real life.
04:30And she's just echoing her own voice.
04:32And it's just a classic moment in gospel.
04:34And I feel like that was such a memorable
04:37piece of when I'm playing that music in the background.
04:39It's like, oh, this, this woman is special.
04:42So just a little Easter egg.
04:44You would know all the things that say to ease the pain and sweet melodies like.
04:54I'll memorize you like books of the Bible.
04:57Girl, you can be my revival when you say my name is.
05:02I feel like when it comes to a woman, you got a lyric, sir.
05:06You know what I mean?
05:06For her to decide if, you know, you will be allowed in her garden.
05:10Because of that, I felt like I had to let everybody know, you know,
05:14I was innocent, but I could always say these words.
05:17And heaven is a perfect metaphor because it's like the highest compliment you can give a woman.
05:21It's just like you are this thing that everybody's trying to get to.
05:25It's just love.
05:31My father was in the military, you know what I'm saying?
05:33He was a very strong man, very large muscles.
05:36And then he had this look that was just like,
05:38did you remember Amos and Revelation?
05:41I was like, no, sir.
05:42And next thing I know, I'm beaten.
05:45But then I learned the books after that beating.
05:48And that's why I'm like disciplined.
05:50I needed it.
