00:00Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges India to pursue greater self-reliance and manufacture products from fertilisers to jet engines and even EV batteries.
00:11Besides that, he also vows to protect farmers amid a trade conflict with Washington.
00:18Modi announced reduced goods and services taxes from October, a move intended to boost domestic consumption.
00:25The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump's recent 25% tariff on Indian goods, imposed over Russian oil imports and raising some duties to 50%, among the steepest faced by any U.S. trading partner.
00:40Although Modi avoided direct mention of the tariffs, he reaffirmed his commitment to farmers, a key political bloc that forced him to repeal three farm laws in 2021 after a mass protest.
00:52Meanwhile, he further announced plans to establish a new defence system called Sudarshan Chakra, following India's four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May.
01:02According to a government statement, it is aimed at neutralising enemy infiltrations and enhancing India's offensive capabilities.
