00:01This walk explores the mysterious and salty marshes of Porlock
00:05and walks along the Shingle Ridge overlooking the sea.
00:09Here's all you need to know about visiting.
00:11This route starts from the busy village of Porlock
00:14where there are several well signposted car parks.
00:18Be sure to check the tide times before you plan your visit.
00:22Porlock village is one of the largest on Exmoor
00:25and has a long history of settlements
00:29and a great selection of shops, pubs, cafes, accommodation and places to visit.
00:36The route takes you along the boardwalk
00:38showing you the strange and otherworldly landscape of Porlock Marsh and out to sea.
00:43It then takes you past the picturesque village of Bossington and back through farmland.
00:53When the tail end of Hurricane Lily hit the coast in October 1996
00:58Porlock Marsh changed forever.
01:00Although the change from Freshwater Marsh to Salt Marsh
01:03has meant a loss of some features such as reedbed,
01:06new habitats have developed in response to the saltier conditions.
01:13Glasswort and Sea Perth Plain thrive in this brackish and frequently flooded marshlands.
01:19When high tides flood in, fish will enter the marsh for food and shelter,
01:25followed by predators such as sea bass and fishing birds such as heron.
01:31The muddy creeks are perfect for wading birds that you can often see probing the mud for mollusks.
01:38As the marsh continues to change, it will be fascinating to see how the wildlife adapts to the evolving environment
01:45and to see what species make this special place home.
01:50In the 1800s, lime was really significant for farming
01:53and it was used to fertilise Exmoor's acidic soil.
01:57When it became cheaper to crush the limestone,
01:59the kilns were no longer needed and have been unused for over a hundred years.
02:10When you reach the Hamlet of Bossington,
02:12turn right and head back to Porlock where you can pick up some delicious fish and chips.
02:17It's so reassuring to know that in the face of adversity,
02:23wildlife and humans really can adapt to changing environments.
