HVO Seated Tricep Dip Machine Review: Triceps & Chest Isolator

00:00Today I'm reviewing the HBO Fitness Seated Tricep Dip Machine. This is a budget isolation machine
00:04that's going to mimic a bodyweight dip and this is more stable than a bodyweight dip so you can
00:08isolate the muscle groups better. Now there's not much to the machine. There's a seat, a lever arm
00:13connected to the back of the seat and then that lever arm is connected to both handles. So when
00:18I push down on the handles the lever arm goes up working just like a seesaw. So as far as the
00:23biomechanics or how this works that's all there's to it. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done if
00:27your goal is isolation of the chest and the triceps. Now let's talk about the handle here. So the
00:31handle is t-shaped. You have an inner handle, outer handle and then a neutral grip handle.
00:36Depending on how you grab it and how your body is positioned you're going to isolate different
00:40muscle groups. So for example if I sit up straight if I grab the inner handle and then I push straight
00:45down then I'm isolating the triceps. This is just moving from the elbow down so it mimics more of a
00:51triceps extension exercise. Now if I lean forward and I push down then this is more of a bodyweight dip.
00:57I feel it more on my chest. Because I have the inside grip I still feel it on my triceps as well.
01:03If I grab outward the outer handle now I feel it more on my chest than on my triceps and my favorite
01:09is the neutral grip just because it feels more natural to me. It feels more like a bodyweight dip.
01:15Now one thing I notice though is that as I go down here the handle the inner handle comes close to my
01:20outer thigh. So for somebody that has really big thighs that might be an issue. For me it's not a
01:24problem and I can always bring my thighs inward a little bit to get them out of the way. Now as far
01:28as the padding on this machine goes it's a one inch padding. You don't need a lot for this machine
01:33just because you're not going to have a lot of weight on the back pad. Most of the weight is going
01:36to be on the seat pad. And with the one inch seat pad the thickness that's good enough for me. I don't
01:41feel like it's uncomfortable. Now the seat pad itself is adjustable to four different heights
01:45to accommodate people different heights. And then the vinyl itself the vinyl is just like a budget
01:50vinyl that you see with other Amazon benches. Now when it comes to the back of the machine the back
01:53of the machine has the lever arm. That lever arm is connected to the weight horns and the weight
01:57horns are adjustable. You can leave them like they are right now for Olympic size weight plates or you
02:02can take them off and there's a one inch weight horn on each side there for standard size weight plate.
02:07So it accommodates for whatever weight plate you have. Now they added a chain to that lever arm in the
02:13back and it comes with a small straight bar to mimic a bicep curl. Now I don't think it works very well
02:18for the bicep curl and I'll tell you why right now. So if I put my arm on the side here to do a bicep
02:23curl you have the elbow that's the fulcrum. The wrist starts close to the body and moves away from
02:28the body and comes back to the body. So it goes up in an arc in this way in this direction. The lever
02:33arm is doing the same thing but in the opposite direction. So it starts here and goes in an arc in
02:38this direction. So it's doing this. So as I'm doing the bicep curl I feel like I'm being pulled forward
02:43when I get to the top of the movement. So for that reason I don't think they thought it out right.
02:47It's not it doesn't work very well for bicep curls. So as far as the machine goes it works very well
02:52smoothly for triceps seated tricep dips. I don't have any issues with that. One thing I wish I
02:58would have added to the machine though is a seat belt. The seat belt would have made them even more
03:01stable so that when you go real heavy you can just focus on pushing down and not being lifted off the
03:08seat. But other than that it moves well. You have different angles to target different muscle groups
03:12through isolation. And the only issue is that this is very close to the thighs whenever you go down.
03:17So if you have bigger thighs then you know you might you might have some rubbing going on there.
03:22But other than that there's not much to the machine. It does what it's supposed to do. I feel it in the
03:25triceps. I feel it in the chest. So it does what it's supposed to do. Isolation of those muscle groups.
