00:00On August 13th, the world celebrated the legacy of historical Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro Ruz on his 99th birth anniversary.
00:21In Peru, President Dina Boluarte signed a law granting general amnesty to people investigated for crimes committed during Peru's internal armed conflict between the 1980s and the 2000s.
00:37And the death toll from Israel's genocide in Gaza now exceeds the 61,700 civilians killed since October of 2023, most of them being women and children.
00:58Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from a tele-sourcedor in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:07Cuba and the world celebrated the legacy of the historical revolution leader Fidel Castro Ruz on his 99th birth anniversary.
01:25Fidel, born on August 13th in 1926 in Viran, in the office of Olin, which held the main commemorative acts in his honor.
01:35From there, authorities from the Cuban Communist Party highlighted the revolutionary leader's struggle against the imperialist interests of the United States and in favor of the people.
01:47Tributes to the revolutionary strategies took place across the world as he became a symbol of global resistance,
01:54whose political and ideological legacy continues to guide Cuba's defense of sovereignty and independence.
02:05Also on Wednesday, President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, received a Cuban delegation in Caracas
02:14as part of the celebrations for the 99th anniversary of Fidel Castro's birth.
02:19In his speech, President Maduro described the historic leader of the Cuban revolution as a hurricane and a giant
02:26who changed the history of Latin America, the Caribbean and much of the world.
02:31He assured that Fidel lives in our struggles, in our hearts, and is permanently present in everything that we do
02:38and emphasized the importance of his ideas and leadership in the development of the new Latin American revolutions.
02:45Maduro also recalled the relationship between the Cuban leader and Hugo Chavez,
02:51whom Fidel recognized as the best friend that Cuba has ever had.
02:55And also in Colombia, citizens paid tribute to the Cuban leader in celebration of his 99th birthday.
03:09Citizens highlighted the legacy of Latin American integration, social justice, and anti-imperialism of Commander Fidel Castro Ruz
03:16in an event that reinforced the alliance between Cuba and Colombia.
03:21They also recalled the tireless struggle of the historical leader for a more just society.
03:28It is worth noting that Colombians also expressed their solidarity with the Cuban people
03:33following the aggressions of the United States and also condemned the genocidal actions
03:38perpetrated by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people.
03:42And on August 13th, the Fidel Castro Ruz Center, the institution dedicated to shaping values, spreading thoughts,
03:55and studying the work of the Cuban leader became the epicenter of activities for the 99th anniversary
04:01of his birth in the Cuban capital.
04:04Our correspondent in Havana, Fabiola López, was there and tells us more.
04:07This is how the Fidel Castro Ruz Center awoke on August 13th.
04:18The celebration of the first 100 years with Fidel is just beginning, and children are the
04:22stars of the day.
04:23It is a different day, and it could not be any other way.
04:27Today is Fidel's birthday.
04:41This is a buzz presented to Fidel by Chinese President Xi Jinping in July 2014, but Fidel
04:48did not feel comfortable with it.
04:50However, he upset it as a sign of friendship with the Chinese people.
04:54He didn't feel comfortable with it because he didn't want any status or buzz in his name
05:00or with his face on them.
05:01They say that Fidel once said that while his enemies were talking about his post-Castro era,
05:15he was working towards that moment.
05:17The truth is that almost 10 years after his death, that is how Cuban children see and feel
05:22it.
05:23His personality, his culture, his culture, he is good, he is kind.
05:31I am talking about him in present because even though he is dead to us, he never died.
05:41Even if you don't believe it, Fidel is always by our side, teaching us, and we are learning
05:44things about him.
05:46Even though he is no longer alive, he is morally in the hearts of all of the children.
05:49The thing I admire the most about him is his work, his thought, and that he was a great
06:17man.
06:24On August 13, on this island, the man who changed the destiny of this part of the planet
06:30was born.
06:3199 years later, thus who know how to love, the hope of the world, celebrate his survival,
06:36in the words of Martí.
06:38Fabiola López, Telesur, La Habana.
06:45And we now move on to other topics.
06:48United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new visa restrictions for officials
06:52from Cuba, countries in Africa and Grenada for contracting Cuban medical services.
06:59The politician also announced measures against several Brazilian government officials and former
07:04executives of the Pan American Health Organization for their involvement in the Mice Medicals program,
07:10which operated with Cuban personnel.
07:13Rubio published in X that the State Department is taking action against officials complicit with
07:20Cuba, according to their opinion in these missions, which, according to the view of the United States,
07:27are imposing coercive conditions on health professionals.
07:32Over 24,000 healthcare workers currently provide services abroad as part of solidarity missions,
07:39which have been broadly defended by the countries in the region.
07:50Precisely in this context, the Cuban Foreign Ministry rejected these new visa restrictions imposed
07:55by the United States on the Cuban medical mission to the Pan American Health Organization and their families.
08:02Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez described on his X profile the measure as an act of interference,
08:10given that medical missions are a legitimate program of international cooperation.
08:15Rodríguez also assured the continuity of the health brigades as an expression of solidarity with vulnerable peoples.
08:21The diplomat explained that the restriction includes officials from the Mice Medicals program implemented by Brazil
08:28and authorized by the Multilateral Health Agency.
08:38Now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell Us Your English,

08:48Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
09:00Peruvian President Dina Boluarte signed a law granting general amnesty to people investigated for crimes
09:07that were committed during Peru's internal armed conflict between the 1980 and 2000.
09:13The initiative would benefit members of the armed forces, police and self-defense committees accused
09:18or under investigation for crimes committed during this period.
09:23Social movements and human rights organizations are denouncing that the legislation undermines decades of efforts
09:30to ensure accountability for atrocities that were committed during this armed conflict.
09:36In this regard, the text will be subject to unconstitutionality actions by various institutions and groups
09:43that consider it a threat to fundamental rights.
09:46Precisely in this context, a rally was held in front of the Palace of Justice in the historic center of Lima
09:59to protest against the amnesty law for public officials enacted by President Dina Boluarte.
10:05A crowd of citizens, politicians, human rights defenders and relatives of those who suffered during the country's internal armed conflict
10:13gathered to oppose the amnesty law, arguing that the law is the manifestation of the enforcement of institutional impunity.
10:21The lawyer for the national coordination of human rights, Gloria Cano, pointed out that it is not possible to implement the amnesty
10:28because it not only affects the rights of the victims, but also the international commitments of the Peruvian state.
10:36And we stay in Peru because the judiciary ordered five months of preventive detention for former President Martín Vizcarra accused of corruption
10:52for allegedly receiving bribes from construction companies during his tenure as regional governor of Moquegua.
10:59In the case that focuses on alleged irregularities during the Moquegua administration, he is accused of receiving improper payments
11:08in exchange for favoring construction companies in unspecified projects.
11:13Vizcarra's arrest makes him the fifth former Peruvian president to face preventive detention,
11:19following the precedents set by figures such as Oleanta Humala and Pedro Castillo.
11:25The case, which began in 2020, is based on investigations involving testimony from effective collaborators and construction company executives.
11:42We continue with other topics.
11:43The government of the United Kingdom launches a social media contest for Argentine students to visit the Malvinas Islands
11:51as if they were tourists in their own territory.
11:55The controversial initiative posted Wednesday on Acts, which also extends to students from Uruguay and Paraguay,
12:02sparked indignation in Argentina as it denies the nation's sovereignty over the islands.
12:07Minister of the government of Buenos Aires province, Carlos Bianco, described the post as a new provocation of the UK government
12:15and took the opportunity to criticize the administration of Argentinian President Javier Millet as well, stating that it avoids condemning the UK repeated provocations.
12:25Bianco also stated that the government of Buenos Aires province works to stop this surrender of sovereignty in the educational sphere through the Malvinas Future Project.
12:36The Malvinas Islands are an Argentine territory illegitimately occupied by the United Kingdom since 1833.
12:43And Argentine President Javier Millet allocated $1 million to establish an organization that will strengthen political, economic and cultural ties with Israel.
12:59It is about the million dollars that President Millet received when he was awarded this year's Genesis Prize for his unwavering support for Israel.
13:10Far from being a symbolic gesture, the donation functions as a political act.
13:14While most Latin American governments are distancing themselves from Tel Aviv due to human rights violations,
13:20Millet turns the award into financial and diplomatic support for a state that is being accused by the United Nations of war crimes
13:30and whose offensive in Gaza has been described by international experts as genocide.
13:45Congressman Julio Cesar Triana was shot while leaving the municipality of La Plata in the department of Huila.
13:52Triana, who belongs to the Radical Change Party, assured through his social media accounts that both him and his work team were unharmed in the attack
14:02and requested immediate support from the police and the army.
14:06In response to the incident, a person in Gustavo Petro sent a helicopter to evacuate the congressman.
14:12He also stated that security forces are searching for the perpetrators of the attack
14:17and explained that dissident groups from the now disbanded Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia are present in the area.
14:31In Guatemala, police detained activist and Native rights defender Leocadio Jaracan without clear reasons for his arrest being disclosed.
14:41The native movement leader and former congressman was arrested at La Aurora International Airport
14:47as he prepared to travel to a conference on justice and native peoples in South Africa.
14:53During his transfer, Jaracan denounced the criminalization of protests and of those fighting for justice in the country.
15:02Through the fabrication of legal files by the prosecutor's office to justify the detention,
15:08Huracan constitutes the third arrest from 2023 protest against Attorney General Maria Consuelo Porras.

19:17In addition, authorities reported that between 250 and 300 millimeters of rain fell in different parts of the capital,
19:25forcing over 1,000 people to evacuate immediately.
19:29In nearby cities such as Incheong and Gimpo, the rainfall left several vehicles stranded on roads that became rivers,
19:37as well as several residents trying to rescue their belongings and helping family members and neighbors to evacuate their homes.
19:44The Spanish government has asked for support from the European Union to fight a wave of fires that have forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 people.
20:02The Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska detailed that the request includes two Canadair planes to fight fires through the civil protection mechanism.
20:14In Castilla and León, one of the most affected areas by the fires,
20:19at least one dead and seven injured have been reported so far, with four of them in critical condition.
20:25The risk of the fire spreading is increasing due to wind gusts and the drought that is hitting the northwest of the country.
20:54Finally, over 200 boxes of historical manuscripts were returned to the town of Timbuktu after being away from their place of origin for more than 10 years.
21:05The shipment, which weighed 5.5 tons, included manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 19th century
21:13and included between 200,000 and 400,000 pieces written in Arabic and local languages such as Sujay, Tamashak and Fula.
21:23Its contents cover theology, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, law, literature, history and philosophy,
