00:29And the death toll from the ongoing genocide committed by Israel in Palestine has surpassed 53,000 people killed since October 7, 2023.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:59The first direct talks since 2022 between delegations of Russia and Ukraine took place on Friday in Istanbul.
01:13Chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Kan Hakan Fidan, the delegations headed by Presidential Secretary Vladimir Medinsky on the Russian side and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, representing Ukraine, gathered at the Dolmabash Palace.
01:28While giving statements to the press after the encounter, Medinsky unfolded that at the meeting the delegations discussed a 1,000 for 1,000 prisoner swap and that both sides agreed on each country to present their path for a future ceasefire.
01:43Meanwhile, the Ukrainian side reportedly requested a direct meeting between the heads of state. In this context, the Russian delegations assessed to be satisfied with the results and willing to continue the meetings.
01:56In the coming days, a large-scale prisoner exchange will take place, 1,000 for 1,000 people. Second, the Ukrainian side has requested direct talks between the heads of state.
02:15We have agreed that each side will present its vision of a future ceasefire and write it down in detail. Once these visions are presented, we believe it is appropriate, and this has also been agreed to continue our negotiations.
02:37Earlier on Friday, an initial round of meetings arising from the Ukrainian disagreement took place in Istanbul. The gathering between delegations of Turkey, Ukraine and the United States was hosted by the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and included on the U.S. side Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Thomas Barak.
03:04Representing Ukraine were Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha, Defense Minister Rostem Umerov, and head of the presidential office, Andriy Jermak.
03:11The three-day walkway talks happened after, on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refused to attend scheduled meetings with the Russian delegation.
03:25The chief prosecutor of the international criminal court, Karim Khan, will take a leave of absence until an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct reaches a conclusion.
03:40The Hague-based court said in a statement that Khan communicated his decision to take leave until the end of the investigation.
03:47While Khan is on leave, the court's deputy prosecutors will be in charge of managing the prosecutor's office.
03:53The inquiry, which is being conducted by the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services, was announced in November after allegations emerged about his treatment of a woman who worked for him.
04:07The allegations include unwanted sexual touching and abuse over an extended period.
04:14The government of China urged the United States to stop its suppression of Chinese tech and artificial intelligence companies.
04:24The call comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce issued an announcement noting the use of Huawei's Ascent ships as a violation of U.S. export controls,
04:34warning the public of the potential consequences of allowing the use of U.S. AI ships to train Chinese AI models.
04:42In this regard, China's foreign ministry denounced that Washington is abusing export control and jurisdiction to unreasonably block the ship manufacturing industry.
04:52Furthermore, Beijing accused the White House of violating market rules and infringing on the legitimate rights of Chinese companies,
05:00warning it will take firm measures to defend the businesses' right to development.
05:05The United States overstretches the concept of national security, abuses export controls and long-arm jurisdiction,
05:20and groundlessly and maliciously blocks and suppresses China's chips and AI industry,
05:25which severely violates market rules, destabilizes global industrial and supply chains,
05:31and undermines Chinese businesses' legitimate rights and interests.
05:35China firmly opposes this and absolutely does not accept it.
05:39China urges the United States to drop its protectionist acts and unilateral bullying,
05:44and stop its egregious suppression on China's tech businesses and AI industry.
05:49China will take firm measures to defend its right to development and Chinese businesses' legitimate rights and interests.
05:56The government of India denied recent statements by the United States on the implementation of a trade agreement between the two countries.
06:05Indian Foreign Minister Subran Majam Jaishankar pointed out that any trade agreement between New Delhi and Washington must be established by mutual agreement and benefit both parties.
06:16The diplomat also highlighted that until an agreement is finalized, any affirmation is premature as it is considered a complex negotiation.
06:26The statements come after US President Donald Trump alleged that New Delhi was willing to offer an almost definitive withdrawal of the tariffs imposed on Washington.
06:37Pakistan celebrated on Friday the Day of Gratitude in commemoration of the end of the recent escalation of hostilities with India over the attack in Kashmir.
06:50Activities are being held throughout the country to honor the victims and pay tribute to the armed forces.
06:56During the celebration, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan visited the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the port city of Karachi in the Sindh province to pay homage to the father of the nation.
07:08During the visit, the Governor touched on the ceasefire and stressed that any future talks with India on Kashmir and water sharing should be based on equality and mutual respect.
07:19And now we have a show day coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesuri English where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
07:33We will be from Pakistan with us.
08:03Welcome back to From the South.
08:10The ongoing genocide committed by Israel in Palestine has killed over 53,000 people since October 7th, 2023, a death toll that keeps rising as the Zionist regime continues its onslaught on Gaza.
08:23Precisely, Gazan Health authorities reported that in the last 36 hours alone, Israel killed more than 250 Palestinian civilians while 216 others were wounded.
08:35The Palestinian Authority denounced the enclave is witnessing the most atrocious ethnic cleansing campaign,
08:41as the latest reports by the Health Ministry unveiled that the number of martyrs of the genocide increased to 53,119, while the number of injured already exceeds 120,214, mostly women and children.
09:03Palestinian organizations denounced the systematic destruction of telecommunications infrastructure by Israel's Zionist forces.
09:10The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Telecommunications denounced that Gaza is facing unprecedented dissolution and digital blackout.
09:19They further stated that the destruction of fundamental structures for the Palestinians by Israel represents a major challenge for the development of the people in order to survive.
09:29Furthermore, the authorities condemned the destruction of more than 60% of the towers of the cellular companies,
09:36which they stressed seeks to destroy businesses and companies that allow the truth about Gaza to be told.
09:42The government of Chad has confirmed the arrest of former Prime Minister Success Masra in connection with violent clashes in the southeast of the country.
09:55Local authorities indicated that the clashes, which left at least 35 people dead, took place in the village of Mandacao, located in the Logon Occidental province.
10:06The dispute between ethnic Fulani nomadic herders and local Nvaje farmers allegedly occurred over the demarcation of grazing and farming areas.
10:17In this context, the government condemned the act of violence and specified that the necessary measures would be taken to find the perpetrators of the attack.
10:25On Friday, the country's Attorney General informed on the arrest of Mazra, who had reportedly called on the population to arm themselves.
10:38In Cuba, the nation's ongoing cooperation with the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement, MST, seeks to boost food production through knowledge and technology sharing in the agroecology field.
10:50More on the outcome of this cooperation with the correspondent.
10:5522 tons of black bean grains have arrived to Cuba, headed to different plantations and institutions within the country.
11:03This is part of the ongoing collaboration between the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement, the MST, and the Caribbean islands, seeking to boost food production through shared work on agroecology.
11:15Cuba's National Institute of Agricultural Sciences was among the facilities benefited by this cooperation.
11:22This is an institute that is in charge of the investigations in agriculture.
11:30It belongs to the Ministry of Higher Education, and it works on different lines of investigation.
11:36Our link to Brazil's Landless Workers Movement is very important to us, for its experiences in the use of agroecology, bio-inputs, and in the obtention of varieties, and in the production of grains in particular.
11:53We are very hopeful that the results we've seen in Brazil may work here in Cuba as well.
11:59The investigation teams in the Caribbean nation are now ready to begin analyzing the adaptability of these grains in Cuban soil through the incorporation of different techniques.
12:12The objective is to boost productivity.
12:15The Brazilian MST, a decades-old rural workers movement with vast experience in agroecology, believes it can be achieved through collaboration, including the exchange of technical teams and the sharing of technology.
12:29And in this way, we are trying to think how to contribute in the process of technological exchange, increasing productivity, thinking about other genetic varieties that can contribute to Cuba.
12:47And that's how we cooperate, what we call a solidarity cooperation between the MST and Cuba.
12:54For example, Cuba developed a range of bio-inputs that also contributed with the MST, thinking in terms of what are the potentials in which we can carry out a joint work.
13:09The cooperation is rooted in popular education, the conception that it's the rural workers themselves who best know their own context, and it's from the technical analysis and sharing of practices that the producers may find solutions to current challenges.
13:27That producers, with the means they have in their own lands, in their own context, be able to produce.
13:36That they be less and less dependent on external supplies, so that everything remains in a closed cycle, and we can, like this, achieve better results.
13:47While boosting food production is key to any country in the global south, this is particularly true in Cuba, where the US imposed blockade hinders access to basic supplies and machinery, forcing the nation to rely on imports that condition the local economy.
14:04In a world in which food production seems to respond more to market cues than to community needs, the exchange seeks to find alternative ways of production through the cooperation between Brazilian and Cuban workers.
14:18That is why agroecology is so important for food sovereignty as well.
14:25So, in spite of having the blockade, we have to fight against it.
14:29We have to, as Cubans say, make something up that help agroecology make it better.

14:57Welcome back to From the South.
15:18Panamanian collectives continue the indefinite striking rejection of Law 462 of the Social Security Fund,
15:25The peaceful protests, which also denounced the government's agreement with the United States that establishes military bases in the country,
15:32have been violently repressed by the national executive as President José Raúl Molina rules out dialogue.
15:38In this context, on Thursday, the Construction Workers Union denounced the arrest of union leaders and the violation of union freedom by the executive.
15:47In addition, they warned that the police authorities enter six communities using tear gas in the presence of children and elderly people.
15:54Through a message published on his ex-account, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Pedro, accused several senators of receiving money to block the popular consultation that sucked to improve the labor and social conditions of Colombian citizens.
16:13The President criticized the actions of a group of congressmen who, according to him, act against the general interest and violate the principles of the Constitution.
16:22He urged citizens to mobilize to demand labor and health reforms and warned of possible strikes as a response to this situation.
16:30Furthermore, he emphasized the need for the people to take an active role in the creation of laws that promote social welfare, rejecting corruption and paramilitarism.
16:40In Colombia, the Director of the National Police, Carlos Fernando Triana, announced the arrest of one of the accused in the killing of 13 people inside a mine in the province of Patas in northern Peru.
16:57Joint work and coordinated actions to locate the suspect led to the arrest of Miguel Antonio Rodriguez Diaz, who will be charged for the crimes of criminal organization, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated homicide.
17:11According to Peruvian judicial records, Rodriguez Diaz entered the mine shaft with 20 other people, presumably to take material previously stolen by other miners.
17:20This was allegedly followed by an armed confrontation that resulted in 13 fatal victims.
17:26The next few hours could bring Rodriguez Diaz to repatriation so that he can face justice in Peru.
17:35In Peru, the Public Prosecutor's Office has filed two constitutional complaints against the President Dina Boluarte in less than 12 hours, adding to the endless list she has accumulated.
17:46The most recent is related to the National School Feeding Programme, Cali Warma, and the National Programme of Plataforms for Social Inclusion.
17:54The Public Ministry accuses President Boluarte of aggravated collusion for favoring Victor Torres Marino, a close friend of her brother, Nicanor Boluarte, who is also linked to serious crimes.
18:05The facts occurred when the current president was Minister of Development and Social Inclusion and awarded a contract of almost €12,000 to Torres Marino.
18:20A massive blackout has been affecting Haiti since Thursday after a group of unknown assailants attacked the peligro hydroelectric plant.
18:29According to Haiti's state-owned electricity company, the attack, which has not yet been claimed by any group, is forcing them to suspend service to preserve the equipment.
18:40They point out that the chaos in the country has delayed the restitution of the service in the power plant located in Plateau Central and an inland basin shared with the Dominican Republic.
18:52Although the state company does not specify the real extent of the failure, nor the time it will take to repair it, they assure that it is an atrocious act and ask the authorities to warranty the security of the strategic installations.
19:05Bolivia's Supreme Electoral Court TSE confirmed that former President Evo Morales may begin the registration process as a presidential precandidate for the August 17 elections.
19:20Oskar Hasen-Tofel, interim president of the electoral body, emphasized that the effective participation of the political leader will depend on the strict compliance of the legal requirements.
19:32Morales will have to prove his representation by means of a legally recognized political party, an aspect that currently remains without public definition.
19:43The official's declarations were made in parallel to a mobilization of supporters of the indigenous leader, which is heading towards the headquarters of the Supreme Court to register his candidacy.
19:59Diosdada Cabello, Venezuela's Minister of Interior Relations, Justice and Peace, condemned the silence of the extreme right, including the Catholic Church, regarding the return of Michaelis Espinosa, a girl who was kidnapped by the United States.
20:12Cabello criticized the Catholic community's silence on the return of Michaelis Espinosa, a girl confiscated by Donald Trump's government to separate Venezuelan families.
20:21He also highlighted the Maduro government's efforts to ensure the safe return of all Venezuelan migrants who were illegally sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador.
