00:00Uganda's main opposition party, the National Unity Platform, has filed a case in the Constitutional Court
00:06to nullify a new law that reinstates the right of military tribunals to try civilians.
00:13Opposition figure Kizabesidje was brought before a military court last November,
00:18but his case was transferred following a Supreme Court ruling in January
00:22that barred the prosecution of civilians by military tribunals.
00:27But in May, Parliament passed a bill to reinstate the right of military courts to prosecute civilians
00:33and President Yoweri Museveni signed it into law.
00:38Rights campaigners have accused Museveni's government of using military courts to pursue political opponents.
00:44But officials say only civilians who use guns for political violence are prosecuted in those tribunals.
00:51Many supporters and leaders of the NUP, including singer-turned-politician Bobby Wine,
00:57who's preparing to challenge Museveni in next year's election,
01:01have previously been charged or prosecuted by military tribunals.
