00:00Why is this character everywhere? And what is it?

00:04The meme is known as EFO, and it's a reference to a member of the prominent Minecraft server

00:08and content creation group HermitCraft named Ethos Lab. The EFO meme originates from a video

00:13by YouTuber and HermitCraft member Grianne posted on May 2017, 2024. In the video,

00:18members of HermitCraft play Guess the Build, a game where one player builds something in

00:21Minecraft and the others try to guess what it is. At the 755 timestamp, HermitCraft member Skiz

00:26is tasked with building fellow member Ethos Lab, also known as Etho. Ethos' Minecraft skin is

00:31inspired by Kakashi from Naruto, featuring white hair, a mask, a red eye, and a gray and white

00:36color scheme. Skiz's build incorporated these colors and features, including the red eye and

00:40white hair, but rendered them in the shape of an Among Us crewmate, echoing the Amogus meme.

00:45Viewers found the build humorous and began calling it EFO, a nickname some HermitCraft fans already

00:50used for Etho. EFO quickly became a running joke in the HermitCraft community after the video was

00:55posted. On the same day, Reddit user u slash FluffySparks shared sketches of the build to

01:00the slash r slash HermitCraft subreddit, gaining over 1,300 upvotes in a year. Over the following

01:05months, fans created a variety of EFO-themed works, including wooden block sculptures,

01:09crocheted dolls, clay models, and even Minecraft habitats styled like hamster cages.

01:14Some recreated EFO in other games, such as Terraria. Until mid-2025, EFO memes largely stayed

01:19within HermitCraft-specific spaces, like the subreddit and Discord servers. WPlace is an

01:24interactive website modeled after Reddit's slash r slash place, but set on a pixelated world map

01:29where users can create art collaboratively. It went viral in late July 2025, attracting fandoms

01:33from across the internet. In early August 2025, HermitCraft fans began drawing EFO on the WPlace

01:39map. On August 7th, ex-user at vovodeer underscore posted a screenshot showing a massive EFO being built

01:44in Newfoundland, Canada as part of a coordinated fan effort. Other notable EFO art on WPlace

01:49includes EFO Henge, a Stonehenge recreation made entirely of EFOs, and an EFO rendition of the

01:54loss meme. On August 8th, Reddit user IamATomato posted an everywhere I go I see his face meme

01:58about EFO's prevalence on WPlace, earning over 350 upvotes in under a day.
