Georgie Carter, a contestant from the 2024 Great British Sewing Bee, will be running two free sewing Revive & Thrive workshops during Goodwood Revival this year.
00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, group arts editor at Sussex Newspapers. Really lovely to speak to Georgie Carter because Goodwood Revival is on the horizon and you'll be there, you'll be running to fascinating sounding upcycling workshops on Saturday, September the 13th. Upcycling is so important to your way of life, to your view of life, isn't it? Why does upcycling matter so much? And to an extent you're swimming against the tide, aren't you? You're trying to change that tide by doing this.
00:30Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, thank you for having me. I think upcycling in many different genres, I think is really important, but particularly in fashion, because we just have so much wastage. Unfortunately, fast fashion has now become ultra fast fashion and constantly changing themes for your season and updating your wardrobe and this pressure to keep up with trends.
00:52So I'm really trying to, there's a big movement of us trying to kick back at that and just showing that you can create an amazing, unique, beautiful, stylish wardrobe out of textiles that already exist.
01:07We don't need new fabrics.
01:10Which is perfect for the planet and perfect for you.
01:13Yeah.
01:14And you were saying so interesting about the place that you go when you sew, it's a place where you escape concerns, worries. Tell me about that.
01:24Yeah, I think, you know, we all try and find a hobby that, did you hear that in the background?
01:31No.
01:32No.
01:33Okay, good.
01:34Sorry.
01:35I have to shut the door.
01:37We all try and find a hobby that we love and that just helps us to unwind.
01:43And sewing definitely does that for me.
01:45It just takes me to a place where all of my worries and preoccupations go to the background and I can fully immerse myself in something.
