00:00Red Sox falling there third loss in a row first time they've lost three in a row since late June
00:04first time that Garrett Crochet in his 24 starts hasn't gone five innings yet
00:10is this thing going off the rails yeah it's the beginning of the end it's the perfect timing
00:16this is what happens when you don't make moves at the deadline and your starter your number one
00:21guy sort of hits a wall and you're sort of no man's land with him right um you don't know
00:27what's going to transpire over the next month and you can't lose games that that guy pitches in
00:32and they've done that they've done that since the start of the year but you know you can't lose on
00:37nights and he wasn't good he wasn't good at all yeah so it's a it's not their fault but last night's
00:42on him but damn it like he you can't afford you're in this position right now you can't afford him
00:46you're number one guy to go out and have a dud like that that's a good team tells you how good
00:50he's been by the way because that was absolutely stunning to me last night because he's been an
00:53absolute rock and you have alex bregman get up there first at bat gets the ovation goes deep
00:58you're up to nothing first thing on the mound first thing i thought scott boris when he hit
01:02that first thing i thought of scott boris again nailed this son of a bitch man one more time
01:06he is gonna make that guy so much money whether it's here or elsewhere no it's true get paid again
01:12yeah go up to nothing you go back home gonna roll and crochet struggles for the first time that
01:17we've seen in a red socks uniform stunning to me i think the good news is when you kind of look at
01:21this thing bar timing yeah bad timing for sure no question he stops the bleeding he should stop
01:26the bleeding that's what pedro did that's what beckett did uh that's what clements to all those
01:31guys shilling stop the bleeding he didn't stop the bleeding last night you know worry about the
01:34endings with him obviously because he's going to sort of an uncharted territory like you talked about
01:38so but but i look at last night and hearing him post game the velocity was still there which
01:43obviously is a positive right so it's not like there was some dip and then you listen to the approach
01:48and the sweeper there millican incorporating the sweeper a lot more than what you're used to last
01:54night might have been the issue so hopefully last night was approach versus actually hitting that
01:58wall for crochet but i do think what it shows you is that man your margin for error for the boston red
02:03socks is minuscule right now and one of the reasons that you kind of went on this run is the starting
02:09pitching and now all of a sudden if crochet throws a dud giolito isn't the pitcher that we saw for that
02:16extended stretch baio has struggled the last couple of starts here all of a sudden you're looking at
02:21this thing going man i don't want to call it fool's gold in terms of what took place there
02:26but you've got some issues especially consider walker bueller in the back end of that rotation
02:30yeah and tim to your point about going over the innings he's over now so his last start last year he
02:36threw 146 in his career high his last start he went over that he went into last night it i think was
02:41148 and third um so the velocity wasn't down but the approach change are those related is the
02:47approach changing because he's now mindful that he's over that number he doesn't want his velocity
02:51to go down so he's pitching differently than he was before to try to compensate for that look i don't
02:56think every start the rest of the way is going to be last night that felt like an anomaly but i also
03:02think that he might not be the same guy he was exactly at the beginning of the year because it's not
03:07like he's going five innings over his previous high again he's already cleared it and we have
03:11months to go and then this team's in a tight playoff race so it's not like you know are you
03:16going to have him miss starts are you going to go to every sixth day and give up three or four starts
03:20potentially if is can you afford to do that this thing might be decided by three or four games i just
03:24think you're starting to rely not just on crochet but also a guy like giolito other people that are
03:29sort of in this uncharted territory and that's what makes me nervous you're banking on a lot of guys
03:33that haven't necessarily gone to where you're expecting to go over the last two months
03:36and that doesn't feel sustainable to me rookies in big spots you know down second to tie the game
03:41strikes out and uh yeah i know he hit a home run early in the game but you know your pressure's off
03:46there pressure's on in the ninth like that's it's a pressure situation and uh he's not going to be
03:52perfect either so i mean hey the kids have been great they have except for uh your second baseman
03:57you overpaid whatever i paid for it how's he doing i don't know what do you got millican it's tough
04:03because you look at the astros they absolutely mashed lefties and i feel like that maybe is what
04:07got in garrett crochet's head a little bit here they're second in ops in the entire sport against
04:11lefties you're number three right now i believe the yankees are number one so i think that probably
04:15signifies where that approach change came from and it reminded me a little bit of the rangers start
04:19earlier in the year where garrett crochet you have the best fastball arguably in the entire sport
04:23you don't have to overthink things attack attack attack and you saw it the first two innings he was
04:28attacking he was going through guys you know started featuring a little bit more spin with
04:32the sweeper and then all of a sudden second time through the order you don't change the approach
04:36again you think all right if you started sweep which is usually your kind of go-to move after
04:40you go through a lineup one time all right do it reverse no you stuck with it and it wasn't a
04:44surprise that the astros got all over you i thought it was a pretty quick hook as well i think the red
04:49socks saw he doesn't have it tonight let's save some bullets for him and then on top of it all still
04:54even with how bad he was you still could have won this game if your bullpen was clean and jordan hicks who
05:00continues to be an absolute bum since he got here just giving you nothing and keep in mind you have
05:05him under contract for two more years beyond this at 12 and a half million each year this is not a
05:09cheap arm that you brought in and really he's the only guy on the major league roster giving you
05:13anything from the rafael devers trade right now so far since coming to the red socks it's a 623 era
05:19and a 595 fifth it's awesome that he throws 100 miles per hour but to give up that two run blast
05:23that was the game right there because your offense showed it could battle back there all you needed was
05:28shut down innings after that and you couldn't even take advantage garrett crochet is going to be human
05:32at some point he finally didn't go five innings in the start and he gave up five earned runs okay
05:36that's going to happen especially as he wears down and that's something i think i've highlighted all
05:40year long was why i was so disappointed with the deadline and you look at lucas giolito he's the
05:45opposite of crochet right now his velocity is down you go and look at lucas giolito just since the
05:49second half started it's a 482 era and a 646 fifth so he's actually been a little lucky and that
05:55includes him going eight innings against the astros so if you don't have those guys all of a
05:59sudden you go on a three game losing streak in what do you have more so than your phips and your
06:03faps and all that numbers no it's you drop two out of three to san diego and you're heading to
06:09houston breakman's returning like right there's the spot for you like he had to be a stud last night
06:15but i know he can't be that guy it's okay you're gonna have a night where you're not your bullpen not
06:20being able to pick it up when your offense finds a way to put six runs up on the board and keep in
06:23mind the astros didn't have josh hater last night their true closer they didn't have brian abray you
06:28so they beat you without their two best relievers those are the kind of spots where you need to take
06:32advantage of an astros bullpen that's reeling and what do you have to do tonight you're gonna watch
06:36dustin may still try another arsenal he get a haircut yet good nose all red it's him and walker bueller
06:41and that's how quickly you go on a five game losing streak they're gonna get shell tonight yeah like
06:45it's a thin margin of error for them if you don't have garrett crochet doing his thing and you're
06:50asking baio and giolito to be twos and threes when maybe baio i think is a three right now i think
06:55giolito is closer to a four so that'll be four in a row tonight sorry barth i was gonna say about
06:59jordan hicks being the only guy in the major league roster from the devers trade that's giving you
07:02anything you get the other guy tonight because may they traded for tibbs right so i put him in that
07:07tree fair this is a big chance for the rat the ratfield devers trade did not help you last night
07:12you need it to help you tonight well can i think you hit on it though and i hate going back to it but
07:16doesn't this just highlight the deadline and the lack of the lack of doing something substantial
07:20as well i think it's the beginning of the end yeah this is where you needed that shot in the arm and
07:23you don't have it frustrating night last night if you're a uh if you're a red sock fan again started
07:27out great with that bregman home run uh crochet in the mound you're feeling good and uh wasn't to be
