00:00Very simple instructions
00:02And finally
00:04It's Hagler against Hearns
00:07The camera's gonna have to go
00:09Eloquent simplicity by Richard Steele
00:11Let's go
00:12He knows, they know
00:14Staring at each other through the national anthem
00:19The stare down, of course, so customary
00:22Okay, I gave both fighters the instructions in the dressing room
00:29I'm just cautioning you now
00:30Obey my command at all times
00:32Shake in and good luck to both of you
00:34As Ray said, Tommy Hearns usually likes to establish dominance for himself up
00:40The early rounds could really dictate how this fight will go
00:44The first one is the key round
00:47We're underway
00:49And the pace is up-tempo right at the opening bell
00:53Hagler being the aggressor
00:56Hearns working that jab
00:59He has a very quick jab
01:00There's no denying it
01:01And he caught Hagler with two good jabs
01:05And a right hand that might have hurt Hagler
01:07Tremendous pace in the first round
01:09I expect it to be, both guys are going at it
01:12Hearns getting the better of it right now
01:13No nonsense at all here
01:17And a left hand by Hagler
01:22What a pace
01:25You know, both the guys are just winging shots
01:32So whoever gets caught in the chin
01:33There was a left hand by Hagler
01:35That stood heard straight up
01:37And a right hand
01:38Both men have felt the wrath of the other
01:41Tommy is hurt
01:42His legs are going to shake it
01:44Unsteady
01:45And a left hand by Hearns
01:49Threw that off his back foot though
01:51There's the short right
01:52Hagler now just uses defense
01:55He's walking towards Hearns
01:56He's doing the right thing now
01:58Hearns is on his bicycle
02:00Hagler now is going to his body
02:01Remember, Roldan caught Marvin Hagler early on also
02:05There's another good straight right hand
02:08By Hagler
02:09And another
02:09Now Hearns is using his movements
02:12He's trying to throw Hagler off balance
02:14Hearns coming with a right hand lead that time
02:17Both fighters are really off balance
02:20Hagler leading with the right hand
02:22But he's kind of lunging with it
02:23There's another right hand
02:24Backs Hearns into the ropes
02:25Watch for Hagler's hook
02:27Now that was the right hand of Tommy Hearns
02:30And it did catch Hagler
02:32But he didn't take a backward step there
02:33Another good right hand by Hearns
02:37Hagler's working his body
02:40Now trying to slow him time to down
02:41These guys are doing a great deal of energy, Barrett
02:44Tremendous pace in the first round
02:46Blood coming from the face of Marvin Hagler
02:48Can't tell yet where it's coming from
02:49We'll see
02:50Both guys will definitely be winded in the next round
02:53It is over the right eye, I believe, of Marvin Hagler
02:56We'll wait till we get him
02:57And there's a lot of blood early on here
02:58An awful lot of blood on the face of Marvin Hagler
03:01And is it a place where it could do serious damage?
03:04We'll know between rounds when we get into the corner
03:10Hagler punishing Hearns now
03:12But it is Hagler who is bleeding
03:13This is still the first round
03:17The second round
03:22These guys would definitely pace themselves
03:25There has been no boxing at all
03:28Just fighting here
03:29Just slugging blood on the face of Marvin Hagler
03:32Again, we can't tell where it's coming from
03:34While Hagler continues to dish out punishment
03:37And now Hearns bounces right back
03:43This may be the most brutal even round
03:47You've ever seen in boxing
03:48That was an entire fight
04:00In three minutes
04:02The cut is over the right eye of Marvin Hagler
04:23It's hard to tell
04:24It's not on the eyelid, though
04:26It looks to be on his forehead
04:28That may not be as much of a problem
04:29As we look at it
04:31That was where it came, I believe
04:33From that uppercut from Tommy Hearns
04:35That was early in the round
04:37But now later
04:38Marvin Hagler digging to the body
04:40And throwing a right hook
04:41Fought most of that round
04:43In fact, all of it is a southpaw
04:44He took the action of Hearns
04:46A surprise early
04:47Well, the first round lived up to all the heights
04:51And then some
04:52Round two now
04:53Left hand by Hagler
04:55They said this fight would be determined
04:57On heart and the good shin
04:59Right now, that's exactly what it's being
05:01But now the Mariners
05:03Against the Termin down
05:03Both men have been hurt
05:04You can throw the strategy out the window right now
05:07You can throw the strategy out the window right now
05:09What the fuck
05:10A wild first round of Hearns again
05:16Trying to uppercut
05:17On heart and Hyder
05:18Kearns trying to box
05:19Moving, moving
05:19Moving, moving, slipping off the ropes, coming back and trying to land that right.
05:29They are yelling, keep boxing, Tommy, from his corner,
05:32and that looks like what he's going to try and do in this fight.
05:35Turns off balance, off balance, his foot was stepped on, not close to a knockdown.
05:39Excuse me, Al, Hagler turns righty.
05:41I think this could be a key moment in this fight.
05:43For the first time, Hagler switching, gets in with a left hand.
05:47This round, sort of, the way people anticipated the first round would go.
05:53Another right hand stuns Hearns.
05:55The crowd, of course, emphatic over every punch that's thrown.
06:00Hagler, despite that recent disadvantage, has been able to get into Hearns more so than most people expected.
06:07For one simple reason, good left took by Hagler.
06:09He took the best Hearns could offer, and he did come in.
06:12He's getting through that right hand, even though he's getting hit with it.
06:17Halfway through, round two.
06:28Hagler has fought most of this round as a righty.
06:30Now he switches southpaw and lands.
06:33Not as effective as a righty as I thought, but now it's a southpaw.
06:35The jab lands well.
06:37That right jab.
06:42Punching it out, punching it out.
06:43And they're coming in with a left.
06:45Punch and steel saying, punch your way out, punch your way out.
06:48A key element now is Hagler is working when he's on the inside.
06:51He's not just holding.
06:52He is working the body of Tommy Hearns.
06:57Boy, Hearns looks awkward.
06:58His legs look like they're not there.
07:00A little rubbery here in round two.
07:06Tommy, though, blew it and moving.
07:11Trying to get inside again.
07:13The cut opens up over Hagler's forehead.
07:17And the blood begins to trickle down.
07:19Hagler working inside, now up top, half a minute to go in round two.
07:23Oh, what a left.
07:24Hearns trading with him.
07:25Hagler comes back to the right or left.
07:27And another right.
07:28He has Hearns in trouble on the ropes.
07:30Tommy trying to punch his way off the ropes.
07:33Hagler wants to keep him here.
07:34Goes to the body.
07:35Hagler throws low blows.
07:36Marvin Hagler wants to turn this into an alley war.
07:38And he's done it.
07:39Another low blow.
07:40Richard Steele may take points away soon, but will it matter?
07:45Second round coming to an end.
07:47Hagler bloody but very much unbound.
07:49End of round two.
07:50Keep your hands up.
07:59Look, you're going to finish up with the shot.
08:00Move off to one side or the other, okay?
08:03We're not boxing to be in out here.
08:05Try to work on letting him miss with the left
08:06and going over here and then coming back to the right.
08:08You got to cut a band.
08:10Let's boxing.
08:12Stay away and box at me.
08:14Let's get your second wind and relax like nothing.
08:16Let's think, Calvin.
08:19Let's box it.
08:19When you get through with your shot, move off to one side or the other.
08:22You're getting hit on tail end punches.
08:24You understand?
08:25You can hear Manny Stewart talking to Hearns.
08:30They weren't on the cut of Hagler.
08:33And the Petronelli's good cut men.
08:35Goody and Pat have done excellent job on the cuts of Hagler.
08:38What a shock that that man initiated this war right from the beginning.
08:42And you know what?
08:42I thought he would do well as a righty.
08:44He has done better as a southpaw, and he may stay at that.
08:46Again, Stewart telling Hearns to box.
08:50As you say, though, Hagler turning it into a street fight.
08:53Well, he turns righty.
08:54He wants it to be a street fight.
08:56Listen, Marvin Hagler has been rough inside.
08:58He's thrown some low blows.
08:59He has thrown some elbows.
09:01Don't push.
09:01Don't push.
09:02But you know what?
09:02Now the right is getting there, but it's not hurting Hagler.
09:05We've got our answer, I think, to some extent.
09:07Tommy has been hard-pressed to hurt him with that right.
09:10Stunned him early, but not in the last round or two.
09:12Very early.
09:13Had him stunned.
09:14Has him cut.
09:17But it was Hagler doing the damage in round two.
09:19And now, just as we thought might happen, Tommy Hearns was hurt early, so he is boxing.
09:23Now, he has good boxing skills.
09:25He did this against Sugar Ray.
09:26Can Hagler get to him in this posture?
09:28Some people thought, as he, again, becomes off balance, some thought that if Hearns stayed
09:36outside and stayed on his bicycle, it would become a dull fight with Marvin chasing him.
09:41But Marvin has been able to corner him.
09:42And when Marvin gets him in the corner, he is roughhousing him well.
09:45Again, Hagler is all-bloodied.
09:48Time is called by Richard Steele to send Hagler over to the ring doctor.
09:52He's calling the ring doctor in.
09:54The last thing in the world Hagler wants is the fight to be stopped.
09:58The doctor looks at it.
10:00Back comes Hagler with a wild left hand.
10:05It has to be impeding his vision with a right eye.
10:07He's never going to go.
10:09Tremendous right.
10:10Hearns appears rubbery.
10:12He appeared that way in the second round.
10:14You know, Richard Steele is breaking these fighters very quickly.
10:16That's uncharacteristic of him.
10:18It's hurting Hagler because he wants to work inside.
10:22Hearns is smiling, but he's taking shots.
10:24Another right hand.
10:27Hearns turns his back.
10:29Takes another right.
10:30Hearns in deep trouble again.
10:31Hearns is down.
10:32Hearns is down in the third round.
10:34And on his back.
10:35And he's not going to beat the count.
10:37I don't believe.
10:40Tommy Hearns tries to get up.
10:42And he's...
10:43They've got to stop this fight.
10:45Does he get up?
10:45He just does know.
10:47He can't continue.
10:48It's Hagler full of blood.
10:51Blood no doubt impeding his vision.
10:53Stopping him in the third round.
10:55After Hearns almost ended it on a first round knockout.
10:58It didn't go very far, but it was a beauty.
11:01And Tommy Hearns predicted a knockout in the third.
11:04Instead, it is Marvin Hagler.
11:05And we certainly hope Tommy Hearns will be all right.
11:08He is still wobbly.
11:09What a shock.
11:11Instead of Hearns initiating wild early action,
11:13it is this man who, believe me,
11:15has gained any redemption he needed
11:17from the loss to Roberto Duran.
11:19in the third round.
11:19It's a man.
11:23Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
11:25So close to being knocked out in the first round.
11:30Withstood the barrage.
11:32Another look as we watch it at the end.
11:35Hagler with that right hand.
11:37That lunging right hand.
11:38Hearns turning his back on him.
11:40And then you'll see Hagler come in
11:41and deliver a right to the side of the head.
11:44Hearns backing off again,
11:45taking the right hand.
11:47Legs gone at that point.
11:48Down on his back.
11:50Got up at the count of ten.
11:51That was the end of it.
11:54Different angle.
11:56Hearns, whose legs became rubbery in the second round,
11:59having trouble with his balance in round three.
12:02Turning his back.
12:04Another right hand from Hagler.
12:08But at this point, the damage had been done.
12:10Finishing right, right there.
12:12But Hearns was on his way down anyway.
12:15Only disappointment is that it didn't go longer.
12:18What a three rounds.
12:25Different angle again now.
12:27Right hand from Hagler.
12:29And Hearns at that point finished.
12:34Off balance and stumbling.
12:36And so the man from Brockton, Massachusetts
12:38may finally get the respect that he feels he deserves.
12:43and acclaim as one of the greatest middleweights in history.
12:48Doing nothing to dispute that tonight.
12:51Shaking off some thunderous blows in round one.
12:55withstanding the barrage, suffering the cut, coming back strong in round two.
13:02Finishing him in round three.
13:04Hearns right above us in the corner.
13:06Tommy's still shaking.
13:07Tommy on his stool.
13:08Tommy, of course, very disappointed and frustrated as Marvin Hagler, marvelous Marvin Hagler.
13:16The legal name retains the undisputed middleweight title.
13:21And let's go to Al Bernstein now.
13:23Marvin Hagler in a chaotic ring here.
13:27He says, he says, am I the greatest?
13:30And I guess so, Marvin.
13:31Marvin, it was, I guess one of the, perhaps one of the best three round fights ever.
13:37Maybe one of the best middleweight.
13:38I guess you did.
13:40Here comes Tommy Hearns to say congratulations.
13:42We're happy to see that Tommy's all right and a lot of congratulations all around and a lot of water as well.
13:55Marvin, you, Marvin, you took the action to Tommy right away.
14:00You went right for his body.
14:02He looked like he stunned you momentarily with a right in the first.
14:04Did that right hurt you?
14:05It didn't bother me, it just made me madder.
14:07Okay.
14:07I told you I was going to eat him up like Pat, man.
14:09I figured once I get through the right hand,
14:11then it was all mine, you know, because I think the first big on which he tried tried to put me away out there.
14:17I think that's when I got the cut there, but I wanted to show the world I am the greatest now.
14:21Well, you are the greatest middleweight.
14:23There's no doubt about that.
14:24Can I say three?
14:25You went right for the body.
14:26Was that your plan immediately?
14:28That was the way we planned.
14:29I want to thank all my sparring partners, especially I want to thank God for giving me the strength and the courage and the confidence to go in here and to know that I was the one.
14:39I was the champion, but I had to fight like a challenger.
14:41That fight, I think, took tremendous courage on your part for this reason.
14:45You walked right in against the cannon.
14:47You were willing to take the right hand to knock him out.
14:49You got it.
14:50I figured I had to take punches to give some, but I told you he was going to give some to him.
14:54This was, in some ways, not like the Marvin Hagler we've often seen.
14:58Not the ring technician.
14:59You bombed.
15:00That's it.
15:01That's what I felt.
15:02I felt this though.
15:03With every one of my fights I've been fighting, I improved and I put it all together in this fight.
15:08The Petronelli's here.
15:09I guess you've got to be just thrilled with this.
15:11It's probably your biggest moment.
15:12Is he the greatest?
15:13Is this guy?
15:14Does he?
15:15Now that we take care of the, you know, the white guys.
15:17That's the hurt man.
15:18The hurt man, the hit man.
15:19I want to say to all the people out there who spent that money, I hope that you got your money's worth because Tommy's a hell of a fighter.
15:26And I think I put all my all out here, but the better man won tonight.
15:30You have talked about going after Monzone's record.
15:33Is it still on your mind?
15:35And I guess this just fuels you.
15:37Getting that record might put you in that class of the greatest middleweight.
15:40Definitely.
15:41I'm still after Monzone's record, but I don't think that I'll have a big media hype as I did with this one.
15:47So I'm going to continue.
15:48This is one of my toughest fights.
15:49Marvin, congratulations.
15:50Thank you.
15:51Ladies and gentlemen, referee Richard Steele stops about at two minutes, one second of the
16:03third round.
16:04The winner by a TKO and still undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
16:10of the marketing.
16:11The winner will continue았 Speaking ofotypes for B.
