00:00Kids can get themselves into a lot of sticky situations, but experts say some of their
00:04activities are inherently more dangerous than others. Dr. Dan Park tells HuffPost,
00:09there are many obvious culprits of childhood injuries, namely things that involve high places
00:13or high speeds. Park points to things like the monkey bars and trampolines as the biggest threats,
00:18explaining, quote, being thrown very high into the air at very high speeds and often at awkward
00:22angles can lead to musculoskeletal injuries like fractures to the elbows and legs. With Dr.
00:28Christopher Kelly adding that a common injury with regards to monkey bars are supercondylar
00:33fractures to the elbow, which need surgery and orthopedic pinning. However, a less obvious cause
00:37of injury is hot surfaces. Burns related to the sun heating metal surfaces that are meant to be
00:42played on can be serious, especially if children are barefoot. So what's the most dangerous thing
00:47for kids? Well, anything that involves pools. According to the CDC, backyard swimming pools,
00:52even shallow ones, can be killers. They say pools are the leading cause of death in kids aged 1 to 4
00:58and the second for those aged 5 to 14. With the CDC reporting, on average,
01:034,012 drownings have occurred each year from 2011 to 2020.
