China has been ramping up its military pressure around Taiwan, sending more than 80 aircraft into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, between Friday and Saturday. That’s the biggest incursion since China’s People’s Liberation Army Joint Sword-B military exercises in October last year. To find out what’s behind this uptick, TaiwanPlus spoke to Tristan Tang, an associate fellow at Secure Taiwan Associate Corporation.

00:00Over the last Friday and Saturday, the POA sent 85 military aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ.
00:07What's the significance of that?
00:09So we seldom see this type of high-frequent or high-volume assaulties around Taiwan
00:16and for two consecutive days.
00:19So this line, of course, is quite significant.
00:22And what makes it more significant is that this kind of operational pattern
00:28suggests that certain units of the POA Air Force likely had personnel rotation
00:34and pre-staging of logistics and maintenance crews at four bases or other bases in the rear.
00:43Does such a large-scale patrol already meet the conditions of a military drill?
00:48And why has China appeared a little low-key about it this time?
00:52The definition of this type of drills is actually certain types of exercises,
00:58but has not reached the level or complexity of a true exercise.
01:04It will require more personnel, more logistics, more settings, more planning to execute an exercise.
01:12And we all know that the time between June to October is the peak time for POA to launch their military exercises.
01:23So this type of large-scale military operation around Taiwan is expected.
01:29So China often launch a joint combat ready for once a week.
01:35Taiwan's Defense Ministry says it has been closely monitoring and responding to these activities.
01:40But are there any other practical measures Taiwan can take to counter Chinese Grey Zone tactics like this?
01:47To be frank, if the war did not happen, we can do very limited things to really deal with that.
01:53So what we can do is to get prepared.
01:56For example, back in March, they launched two Joint Combat Red Net Patrol in a single day.
02:06And our Ministry of National Defense launched an immediate combat readiness drill.
02:11And I, if I remember correctly, for about four to five days.
02:16So it implies that our MND also preparing for this kind of, you can say, graysom operation,
02:23or you can say the military operation and have potential to transform from drill to a war.
02:32Right.
02:33I wonder if it is a very difficult tool?
02:34That's a good thing.
02:35I wonder if it is yourmiro.
02:37But the majority of our tankers are just in this unit,
02:39the military operation, you can say when you have a military operation,
02:41the military operation, you can say, I dare say,
02:45I'm just going to pre-consumer.
02:46OK.
02:47Then I'm going to re-consumer.
